Your Turn

Maria Bello's interview got me thinking about my first date ever. When was your first date? What did you do? When is the last time you spoke to the person you dated? Do you even remember their name?

  1. A school dance when I was 14, did dinner with another couple, then the dance. At the HS reunion I found out he had a heart attack and died, I never saw him again after HS.

  2. I had a summer romance in Missouri. Being 15, we went roller skating and it was just perfect. We kept in touch a bit til I went to college and started dating someone seriously. I learned that long-distance relationships tend to be glamorized and not real.

  3. Who knows. Obviously it wasn't that super or I'd remember. It was probably a group thing...

    Bup. Dunno.

  4. I was 15 and he was 18. My father made him let my big sister drive us to the dance. When he came to the house, my father had me wait upstairs until he called me. Had the guy sit in the living room with my dad while Dad drank a beer and watched the football game (My father doesn't do that normally, he just wanted to see what the boy was about) Then, after making him very uncomfortable, let me come down stairs. Several more minutes of trying to get my flowers pinned to my dress and we were off. He still dated me after that. I really liked that guy. I broke up with him because he was a senior and I didn't want him to miss out on the fun stuff just because he was dating someone younger. I spoke to him years later. He said it broke his heart I dumped him but that he was grateful later because he knows he would have missed alot.

  5. I was 14 and we went to the mall (I remember I bought "The Joshua Tree" on cassette) and then to the movies. He walked me to my classes and I thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. Then things got weird, we eventually stopped "dating" - but that started a tumultuous relationship that spanned high school, college and afterward - the details are ridiculous, really. No matter who else I've dated over the years, he was always on my mind. I'm happily married now and still have dreams about this guy all the time. It's sick, really. I wish I could lobotomize myself and erase all details of him. Who would ever think that one little date at 14 could start all of that...

  8. I was 15, we went to go see Rocky Horror Picture Show with my sister as a chaperone, and then went to Denny's afterward. Hilarious in hindsight. We dated for about a year and then basically broke each others hearts. I'm now 39, but we did keep in touch. I just saw him and his wife and kid about 6 months ago!

  9. We went to the movie Dune, and Howard Johnson's (!!!) after. Never had a boyfriend before or after. We'll be married 25 years this August! I got very very LUCKY!

  10. I was incredibly shy when I was younger, so I didn't socialize much outside of choir or drama-related functions. As a result, I didn't have my first date until I was 18.

My neighbor's cousin asked her to ask me out for him, because he thought I was pretty. I don't remember his name now, and I'm not entirely sure I even knew it back then.

We went to the bowling alley with my neighbor and her boyfriend. I don't even remember what we talked about, or if I said too much at all to him. I just remember feeling really uncomfortable and hiding behind my hair most of the evening.

I do remember him asking me out again, but I declined.

  11. My first official date was when I was 14, we went out to dinner. I was so nervous, I threw up in the bathroom in the middle of dinner.

  13. Second grade. Went to the movies to see "The Neverending Story II." My mom came.

    And now he is gay.
One of two boys I dated who turned out gay. Oh, and a third became a born-again. So. Yeah.

  14. I was 14; we went to the movies. He had just gotten his own Toyota Land Cruiser for his 16th birthday, and that was the most fun car to drive around in. He was blonde and very beautiful. I do remember his name, and I think he might now be out of the closet. No idea what he's doing currently.

  15. my first date was in 1987, grade 8 to see Dirt Dancing (escandalo!) with a super nerdy guy named Chris.

I only said yes because he wore green hightop converse.

Never spoke again. He's probably running fucking google or some shit by now knowing my luck.

  16. Oh, this is bringing back memories I worked so hard to suppress! 14, double date with a friend who was desperate to go out with this guy, but her parents wouldn't let her go alone (I'm still not sure how my presence helped, but wanting to be cool I said yes). Went to the movies, and he brought a friend. There was wearing of a purple fannypack (!), post year 2000 era. I was not the wearer of said fannypack. Needless to say, we did not repeat that silliness.

  17. My first proper date was when I was 19, we had hung out one on one a bunch of times but this was the first proper sit down to dinner together date. This was also the last time I saw him and I'm pretty sure he had already met his next girlfriend who he is still with 2 years later so can't grumble.

That being said, we don't really "date" in Australia.

  18. I don't know. I think maybe my first date was when I spent 12 hours drinking with a couple of law school classmates and a professor, and then she drew directions to her apartment on a napkin and we went back and I lost my virginity and we screwed again in the morning. I think the last time we spoke was yesterday, something about the name of a dog of a relative on FB being the same name as a dog that was run over right in front of her apartment in, I think, 1986, right after I commented on the dog's name.

And I do remember her name.

  20. Weird. I remember my first boyfriend, but I can't remember our first date. We dated for a year. Years later, I heard his wife got the ring he originally bought for me.

    Ha!

  21. My first date was at a guys house watching movies. I had the biggest thing for this guy my entire freshman year. It was the april before I turned 16. He ended up my first kiss and major makeout session all the same night. It could've gone even further I was so ridiculously smitten but my mother called to see if I was coming home before things went THERE. Thank goodness. The next week he wanted nothing to do with me,got with a very uncute girl which made me die a little inside and wasn't even my friend anymore because I felt very used. Oh,the drama. My family moved a few months later out of state but I always had a few regrets how wrong that went because in the beginning we were really good friends and had fun hanging out even with a major attraction. I was just so innocent which I wanted him to take away. Young and not very bright..

  22. I remember who it was with but cannot for the life of me remember what we did? Maybe out to eat? Movie?
    I was probably 15/16?

The last time I remember talking to him was freshman year of college, when he drunk dialed me. I was completely over him by then so it was WEIRD (and funny).

  23. I was 17, very shy, and agreed to on a double date to a school dance. I'm sure he was a perfectly nice guy, but both of us were so shy we couldn't think of anything to say, and never had another date. I heard at one of our reunions that he is now a priest.

  24. It was my freshman year of high school, and I must've been 14. (14 and very very full of myself, I must say.)

She was a nerdy, funny, sarcastic lesbian who was always reading in class. I was... well, me.

We went to Six Flags together, as part of a class trip, but we managed to try and spend a little time alone despite that. It was pretty innocent. I liked her, but I don't think she ever really felt that way about me back...

I talked to her last week on facebook, (she's still awesome) and she was friendly with my best friend all through high school.
