Richard Gere Hates "Pretty Women"

For his new movie, Richard Gere is making some press stops and Woman's Day asked him about Pretty Women. Richards says that it was silly and that he did not like it and that he has already forgotten it. Uh huh. But he also says that he did not like it because he thinks that it contributed to the global economic crisis because it glorified bankers. Seriously? The entire worldwide recession was because of a movie made 20 years earlier that was about a man and a hooker falling in love. Then I guess if it contributed to the global meltdown, it wasn't so silly and forgettable than was it Richard?

  1. Oh Richard, I don't believe a word you say. That movie made you money, and kept you in the eyes of the movie going public.
Don't get all snooty on us now.
Just tell us you didn't like it cuz' you had to make love to nasty Julia.

thankfully, I believe there was only one of them.

  3. If it wasn't fairly forgettable, don't you think you would have gotten the name right?

  4. Who does it happen to, Kit? Who?

    Cindafuckinrella.

Love me some Pretty Woman. Cheese and all. It is one of the only roles in which I can tolerate Julia Roberts. That and Steel Magnolias.

My colors are blush and bashful.

  5. I thought Gere was going to say that it glorified sex work..but instead he said something stupid.

If anything, Pretty Woman glorified being a hooker. So many young women thought it would be as easy as it was for Julia's character.

The movie didnt factor in the effects of drugs,a pimp, and hard street life.

  6. I agree that it was silly, but he became even more famous because of it. I don't think many people remember that his character was a banker, though.

  7. Just to be clear, I don't have anything against sex work, just when someone is forced to do it at any point.

  8. I hate it becuase they they changed the original ending becuase test audiences didn't like that Gere's character ditched her at the end.

  9. Aw, shoot, way to ruin it for me timebob. LOL. Fluffy, silly, cheesey, whatev, I thought he did some pretty good acting in Pretty Woman. He takes himself way too seriously sometimes. I guess he's proud of American Gigolo?

  10. That was already denied yesterday. http://www.gossipcop.com/richard-gere-womans-day-interview-2012-pretty-woman/

  11. Enty? This is OLD news. Anyone who's anyone knows he doesn't like this movie.

    YAWN

  12. Thanks for the article Sadie! Also, if he hated it so much, why make Runaway Bride? I think that was directed by Gerry Marshall also and it reunited him with Julia. ITA with Susan but I also liked Julia in Sleeping With The Enemy.

  13. Sorry, I meant moussemaker for the article! :-P

  14. Sounds like he doesn't like that he didn't get a bigger cut of the residuals. Or that it wasn't Pretty Man. Whatever. His character wasn't even a banker.

  15. "The entire worldwide recession was because of a movie" -- NO, he very clearly says "contributed" which does not mean entire. Obviously it's lame but let's not twist his words.

  16. I would think that Wall Street was more of an influence. I remember the Gordon Gecko's "Greed is Good" being a mantra for boys in my high school.

  17. That's quite a stretch there, Enty, to imply that Gere believes the movie led to the "recession" (i.e., Wall Street's rampant greed). I agree with his point that it glorifies bankers, which leads to the whole hooker/sex worker thing mentioned in other comments. What's so wrong about what he said? I don't see why he should have to be continually gracious about and thankful for a lousy film - even if it did catapult him to stardom! Should we also pretend forever more that Julia Roberts is anything like the characters she portrayed during her "America's sweetheart" phase?

  18. ugh, HATED that movie. Like someone said, totally glamourized the life of a hooker. Sorry, sweet girls who worked on cars with their dad's DO NOT end up like hookers. Unless they were molested by their dads. :(

  19. Please, 20+ year old movies can't contribute anything to the economy except for maybe some DVD sale revenue.

Really, does anyone remember any profession from that movie, except for the hooker?? And does it matter. IT WAS A MOVIE.

  20. I don't remember what he did, either. Being TOLD his profession still doesn't help my memory. All I remember = hooker.

  21. Pleaseeeeeeeee Richard, the movie made Julia and revived your career.....

  22. He wasn't even a banker in the movie. He was a VC investor, two completely different things. And it didn't really glorify what he did, it made him look like an asshole until he decided to go against his instincts and do something good.

Well maybe it was forgettable, he doesn't seem to remember much of the movie.

  23. OMG...this movie was my guess for the Blind Vice. I wonder if this is a clue.

  24. I liked this movie when I was a teenager because Richard Gere looked great in it. That said, I can't stand JR. At ALL. I can't think of anyone else in Hollywood who is less deserving of her fame and adulation. The only movie I can even watch her in is STEEL MAGNOLIAS, although I won't say why, because it's highly insensitive, seeing as how it's based on real people and all.

  25. One of my all-time favorite girly movies. I probably know every line.

The movie was completely unrealistic, pandering cheese, and I don't think Gere actually knows what a banker is, based on these quotes.

There's a history of actors hating the movies that made them super-duper famous or revitalized their careers. Christopher Plummer calls "The Sound of Music" "The Sound of Mucus." He hates the film. And Robert Redford never even watched "The Sting" until a few years ago.

  27. It was "woman" singular. I like the movie, but it did glorify hooking. Gere should have mentioned that AND about his affair with Julia at the time.

  28. If anything, I would have assumed his comment was a joke, because the "controversy" at the time was that it glorified prostitution.

"My colors are blush and bashful"
Susan, that made me laugh. I love that movie!

"These thighs haven't left the house without lycra on them since I was 14!" "You were raised right!"

  29. You're totally calling him gay right enty? Otherwise you'd have said "Pretty WomAn." hmm...

  30. I'll never forgot the look on my mama's face when the preacher's wife told her she liked Pretty Woman because "it had redeeming social value." ;)

He's not wrong about it being silly, but I still love that movie SO much.

  31. I haven't read the full thread, so please forgive me if someone already brought this up, but I think Pretty Woman was supposed to have a completely different ending. I read that Vivian was originally supposed to die and PW was a big ol' tragedy instead of a romantic comedy, but focus groups hated it or whatever.

I know how Pretty Woman glamorizes prostitution, and how most hookers don't resemble a 22 year-old Julia Roberts, blah blah blah, but I honestly don't hate it. I can't.

And I loved the CRAP out of that soundtrack as a preteen!

    Lay a whisper
    on my pillow
    Leave the winter
    on the ground...

    C'mon. That song is GOOD.

  33. I've seen Pretty Woman a million times. I loved it.

I was very young when I first saw it and yet I still understood that prostitution was not glamorous at all. Maybe because i also watched many of those investigative report shows on the major channels, which show the seedy world of hooking.

  34. I'm glad he hated it. It was a terrible movie, set a terrible example for young women. Jason Alexander's character was the only realistic one in the whole thing (other than, maybe, the shop girls).

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's a vile film that glamourises prostitution. He's quite right. They should both be embarrassed by it. Everyone involved in it and everyone who likes it should be equally embarrassed.

  36. I heard that Gere actually liked Pretty Woman, but the gerbil found it to be a pain in the ass.

  37. Me and my best friend have a long running Richard Gere inside joke so this made me smile. :^]

  38. I like two parts of the movie:

1)when the waiter catches the snail

2)The 'big mistake' scene when she goes back to the store where the salesclerk was mean.

The rest, meh. Gere's character was a corporate raider, not a banker. Like Romney. Gobble up companies then dismantle them for profit. It didn't glorify people like that.

I'm sure he'd rather be most known for something besides a vapid romcom, but w/e. Dude, it's a job that pays an obscene amount of money. Cry all the way to the bank.
