January Jones Eats Her Own Placenta

Here is something nice to start your Saturday. January Jones gave an interview to Kneepads and says that she thinks she is nice and healthy after the birth of her son because she encapsulated her placenta and has been eating it. Look, I know it is an option available to parents and Tom Cruise has been probably hoarding Katie Holmes' placenta for himself all these years. Actually, maybe he ate it raw. What gets me is that January says that humans are the only mammals that don't eat their placentas. You want to know why January? Because we are the only animals that really do not have predators. Other mammals do it so they can hide the scent of their baby. Plus, any nutritional value is probably gone by the time you dehydrate it and turn into powder and for all you know they could have given you tea to be taking in capsule.

  1. Yeah, it is pretty damn stupid actually

  2. This has me concerned she also thinks vaccines cause autism or whatever Jenny McCarthy convinced people.

  3. It's supposed to be pretty good for you. Helps the uterus shrink back down, and helps keep PPD away. But you're probably right about the nutrients being gone by the time it gets powdered.
Gross: I have my placenta in my freezer! But not so I can eat it, I'm going to plant a tree with it in a few months.

  4. I wonder if she eats it with some fava beans and a nice chianti

  5. Ick. Ewww. That is about all I can say about this one.

  6. Ughhh. Too hungover for this mess. Going back to bed before I puke. Thank you January.

  10. @seaward: I didn't do it, myself, but a few friends have. Our kids are getting older, the trees are getting taller, and the kids know that those are THEIR trees.

STFU, Parents has tons of entries about this, it's nothing new (or unusual).

  12. Yeah, not a big deal where I live. Pretty common actually.

  13. I believe that January is bat shit crazy. She would probably eat the baby and brag about it if she thought she could get away with it.

Less than 33 hours to Mad Men. Yeeeaaahhh!!!

  14. I could never eat a placenta....or lick my fanny....or bite my fleas.....or wake up my ‘people’ in the middle of the night.........or climb up the curtains.......or bring blackbirds home to frighten my ‘people’.....it’s an easy life though.

  15. This isn't exactly unheard of. It is also not illegal or harmful, so whatever works for her.

  16. Supposed to be very good! The tree idea is lovely, I wish I had known that when my son was born. I wouldn't eat it, might take the pills BUT I also agree they probably lost all the nutrients.

  20. Hey I watched my cat eating placenta, even SHE looked mildly horrified.

  21. I fried mine up, and it was delish. I wouldn't eat part of another person, but I'm not squeamish about eating something I grew, no longer need, and is full of nutrients and hormones. You go, January!

  23. I remember people finding the story of the Donner party disturbing. Is this any less cannibalistic? I'm just curious. This isn't even done out of necessity, for survival. I wonder which activity people find more disturbing?

  24. Does powdering it and make it stable? Do you have to put it in the fridge to preserve it??

Does she sacrifice virgins and bathe it their blood too???

    ReplyDelete
  25. WTF??????

this is one of the most disgusting posts / threads i've EVER READ. i am seriously disturbed by reading this.

  26. Reminds of the woman on Strange Addictions who drank, bathed in and generally loved her own urine. Made me gag watching the commercial.... The placenta is an organ I think, and yes I've heard of doing this but still think it's disgusting. The thought of frying it up seems Jeffrey Dahmer like.

  27. While I don't think anyone I know personally has done this, I've been hearing about it for 20 years or so, so it doesn't faze me a bit. There are apparently recipes online if you want to pick a way to consume your placenta/feed it to the rest of the family (apparently in taste & texture it's not dissimilar to liver), so hearing that she had her freeze-dried and encapsulated doesn't strike me as particularly strange; if anything, it would be an easier way to take it. (Some vegans even eat it, the idea being that it's meat that no one had to be killed for, and yes, there does seem to be some evidence in some quarters that it's good for you.) I do know that if you've got professionals freeze-drying things (be they herbs, food, placenta, etc.), if they do it right most of the nutrients are maintained, and were I ever to do such a thing (I'm not; for one, I'm too old), taking it in capsules would be the way to go. Also, a lot of other people do save theirs to plant w/a new tree; as it decomposed, it adds nutrients to the soil.

Again, this doesn't bother me at all--if it works for her, and she and the baby seem to be doing fine, more power to her. As we've all seen in the past few weeks, there are FAR worse things she could be doing...

    ReplyDelete
  28. It definitely is not cannibalism. If you are going in that thought direction, are you considering breastmilk cannibalism?

That being said, I'm not sure I could do that myself. I don't know much about, though if the health benefits convinced me enough, I might consider it. More power to those that plant a tree with it, or eat it. Is there any reported harm in it? If not, why not...

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's food -- it's what fed the baby those nine months. I personally can't see eating it, but it's not accurate to say it's a throwback to primeval times -- babies eat nothing but that until they're born.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I've heard of this before, supposed to be super good for you....

    ReplyDelete
  31. I plan on doing it, should I ever become pregnant and give birth. I've heard many success stories about the placenta-PPD link, among other health benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's not like she is cooking it up and chewing on it. If she had it encapsulated, then it is in pill form. She probably takes it like a vitamin. It sounds kind of nasty to me personally, but I'm not educated enough about it to make any judgments.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh dear Gawd, please don't let it give her more bitch powers.

    ReplyDelete
  34. People pick their nse and eat it. To each their own.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sorry but just kinda ewww to me but somehow not if it's in pill form. Not making judgements and to each his own. I have heard of the tree planting thing and find that sweet and lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The only reason I even know that this is done is b/c of STFU, Parents.

I'm going to go tell my husband this story and watch as he runs to vomit.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I know of a couple who fried it and ate it. They swore it was incredible. Not my thing, but they were really into the symbolism and supposed health benefits . I was too relieved to be holding my newborns after laboring to think about placenta collection and preservation.

My first child was dangerously over-due and the placenta was not normal looking. It was shrunken, brittle. My mother and attending nurse were rather concerned when they saw it. The nurse had never seen one so aged.

Not a big deal. This has been happening for years. On the weird scale of 1 to 100, this is about a 6.

  40. I saw a video where a family sauteed the placenta with some onions and garlic. I shit you not. It looked like a bloated liver.

  41. I find the whole idea repulsive... (almost as bad as those high waisted jeans she's wearing)

My best friend ate her son's placenta via smoothies. She froze it whole and cut off chunks. It is a very old tradition. It has not been proven or disproven. Even if it is simply a "placebo" effect that guess what it still works. So I say if you want to eat your placenta go right ahead and more power to you!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow, people, do some research before you pass judgement? (Enty, you, too!) first, heating the placenta actually can activate the nutrients. Second, if you encpsulate the placenta, you barely taste it going down.

The placenta is an organ that the woman's body created to sustain the baby. Why wouldnt it help sustain the mother, give her more energy after a long and hard labor? This is also why mammals eat their placenta.

I encapsulated my placenta after my second son and i swear by the health benefits. Will we ever know for certain? Of course not. There is not big money to be made off of selling natural human placentas (at least not yet) so no one is willing to pay for the research! No profit for big pharma.

But there is growing group of women who know what's up.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The mother is suppose to eat it right after birth to help heal after giving birth. The capsule form is not going to help January.

  48. "what next, eating your young, too?"

"You know, in some cases, that is not a half bad idea."

LMAO - that's f'ing hilarious. I enjoyed your commentary on tweens on another thread. It's not the best age for any human being, LOL. If I had to nail down the best age to eat one's young it would be age 11 so you can preserve the wonderful memories.

Yeah, humans are the only animals that don't eat their placentas. Guess what else we don't do? Eat our own vomit. Rub our butts on the floor. Have litters (unless you are Octomom) and neglect the runts. Lick our own genitals (but that may just be a matter of skeletal limitations).

    So. Gross.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I can't even bring myself to get pregnant because the whole process is horrifying - alien thing growing inside you, ruining your body with all the stretching, then becoming a milk factory and getting bitten by the alien. NOW I need to eat placenta too. Gross! Yuck! Blech!

  51. Anonymous11:45 PM

Dia Papaya, I don't know how old you are, but I suspect you are quite young. And that's great. But there is a big difference between realizing that motherhood is not for you, and freaking out about "aliens" invading your body and "biting" you. That's a really serious issue you've got there.

Pregnancy and children never appealed to me, either, but the fact is, our bodies were MADE for procreation. A child is NOT an alien. Having one is very natural.

If you are more than say, 22 years old, I really think you need to work on your issues. It's one thing to decide having a kid doesn't appeal to you; it's quite another to be so completely freaked out, disgusted and OTT about it.

I will agree with you on the placenta thing, though. That is disgusting. It's classified as medical waste for a reason, folks.

  52. When I was pregnant with my first child I told my husband that, since I have to go through pregnancy and childbirth, he was going to have to eat the placenta. He agreed to it, with a green tinge to his complexion and gagging a bit, because he really did want to do his part. I've never seen anyone as relieved as he was when I told him I was kidding. We're a non-placenta eating family.

So Enty is this your alias or do you plagiarize comments from the Daily Fail website?

  54. Or did Tom plagiarize Enty? Hmmm...

  55. Yeah, Enty posted that about 24 hours before the time stamp on Tom from Toronto's comment. Also, didn't we learn anything about exposing secret identities from the whole Himmmmmm extravaganza? Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

If Enty was a guy named Tom, from Toronto, I would be very disappointed. Very. Nothing against Toronto, of course. I live here. But just...no.
