Amy Winehouse Was Almost Out Of Money
Despite selling millions of records, the fact that Amy Winehouse did not really release anything after Back To Black and was never able to stay sober enough for a tour drained her bank accounts pretty fast. Her estate was closed yesterday in England and after taxes, all that is left is about $4M. It was once probably triple that, but she spent a great deal of it over the years. Not sure how she spent it because until the last year of her life she pretty much lived in squalor; never bought any clothes; and wore the same shoes everyday. Her ex supposedly skimmed a bunch of it for his drug use. Amy spent lots on drugs of course and that time she spent in the Caribbean supposedly cost her almost $1M. Well, I guess if Whitney can blow $100M on coke, Amy certainly could go through $8M on it. Her parents get Amy's entire estate.
To me there is nothing sadder than people who have such powerful talent swimming like a river beneath their veins but lack the ability to realize all that power they have coursing through them.
ReplyDeleteI think believing in yourself, in the end it seems, is worth so much fucking more than any amount of money or fame or talent.
RIP Amy and Whitney
Amy was a mess, but I loved her. I wish she could have saved herself.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that she had $4m after not recording an album says the opposite of what you printed. She seemed to be very fucking frugal if she could make that money last 5 years and still have 4 million left after debts and what not. Get a clue, eh?
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing, trje. $4M is nothing to sneeze at.
ReplyDeleteI hate to hear these wannabes like that one little girl on The Voice. Amy was an original, but an absolute mess. Sadly, there was no saving her.
ReplyDeleteI strive to have 4 mil and be almost out of money.
ReplyDeleteWell said jasmine
ReplyDeleteI read that the actual amount left after taxes is closer to $5 million and am surprised she managed to hang on to that much. Still, it's probably only a fraction of what she blew through.
ReplyDeletecoke? I thought it was meth?
ReplyDeleteNot bad considering the tax rate in the UK that she has nearly 7 million after debt and the life style she was living.
ReplyDeleteI miss Amy.
ReplyDeleteAnd the taxes in the U.K are brutal.
ReplyDeleteI believe some of her money had been put into a trust by her record company a few years ago, after the skimming incident and a few missed appearances. Don't forget, she might not have been able to tour, but she did make a few well paid festival appearances in England. She probably got a pretty decent check from Glee as well, they've used a few of her songs.
ReplyDeleteI'm still sad about her life. So talented and yet one wrong choice (letting such a bad influence into her life) changed everything for her, despite everything her record company and her family did to save her. She got off the drugs, but she just could not stop drinking.
califblondy- which contestant are you talking about? none really strike me as an Amy wannabee
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Enty. You're saying that having $4 million is close to broke?!? WTF?? I guess you would consider me and my piano teacher earnings close to pauper level. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite shocked she had all that money considering she could NEVER get her shit together to tour properly on record a new album. Does the total include earnings made after she died? Cause you know record sales boomed upon her death.
Sad but true, most musicians are tortured souls. Even in the days of Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart.
^ or record. Sorry for typo.
ReplyDeleteThe one with the weird phrasing, she's really young. While the sound of her voice is different, to me she tries to sing the words similar to Amy.
ReplyDeleteShe may be the one Robin Thicke flirted with... no wait, on second thought he tries to hit on all the ladies.
Imagine how much more would have been left if she didn't blow it all on blow and crack.
ReplyDeleteDidn't sales skyrocket again after her death? While there may only be 4 million now seems like they should continue to see residual payments for years to come, no?
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree, once i got to the last bit where it said she had 4 million I kinda laughed... to me that is far from almost out of money. But i gues its all relative.
The day I have 4 mil in the bank and call myself "almost broke"...*sigh*
ReplyDeleteMe too ^^
ReplyDeletecalifblondy- Charlotte Sometimes? I think thats who you're refering to, sang Pumped Up Kicks in the battles and won? I dont think shes anything spectacular live, but I listend to the studio version on youtube, not half bad.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised she actually had that much money.
ReplyDeleteOf course her estate is set to collect tons more $$$ from royalties.
don't forget there is "regular folks broke" and there is "celebrity broke". Amy was celebrity broke.
ReplyDeletePlus, people have been buying her music left and right since her death. I wonder how much she was worth at her height, probably 10 times what was left. Damn, that's a lot of drugs and booze.
I heard this on the news yesterday. They said that because she didn't have a will, the money will go to her parents, who will split it. They also said they will likely get (earn?) more, due to royalties.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, she really did take care of her family, who did their best to be there for her.
Did she write her own music? Or rather, did she write her hits?
ReplyDeleteYou know, just because she lived in a modest flat in Camden, and blow a bunch of money on BS crap like shoes she'd only wear once, doesn't mean she lived in "squalor." Amy was a real human being and wanted to be around the people and life she loved, not up with the toffs and fakes on nottinghill.
ReplyDeletemiss her dreadfully.
