Victoria's Secret Slams Kate Upton
I don't know what got into the casting director for Victoria's Secret Wheaties box, but she had no kind words at all for the SI Cover model, Kate Upton. Kate, who has modeled for Victoria's Secret before is not right for them says the casting director because, "She's like a Page 3 girl. She's like a footballer's wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."
I think they also hate the fact that she is not stick thin and is curvy and actually looks like a real woman. There is no way that Victoria's Secret could use someone who actually looks real.
I think they're pissed that her tits are real.
ReplyDeleteMy husband agrees with me so I know I'm not entirely alone, but there's something about Kate that I just don't like/get. She reminds me more of a "Hefner girlfriend" than SI swimsuit cover model. I don't see the appeal.
ReplyDeleteI'm just fascinated by how small her bikini bottom is in the front. Huh.
ReplyDeleteAnd fuck Victoria's Secret too. I hate that company.
"...she is not stick thin and is curvy and actually looks like a real woman."
ReplyDeleteI hate it when dudes say shit like this. Guess what? Ectomorphic females with slender builds and small chests are just as feminine as bodacious sexpots who get paid to appear on the cover of lad mags.
I also think if you choose to be in that industry, you have to either ignore or accept all the shallow criticism that's going to be lobbed your way.
And here's mine: spectacular ta-ta's, average face. But do "readers" of the swimsuit issue really care about their faces, anyway?
It's a mean spirited thing to say but it gets their point across. It's unfortunate for Victoria's Secret that they don't understand that men like many types of looks, not just the ones that Victoria's Secret tries to sell.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah: it's nice to see that her vagina was apparently made by Mattel.
ReplyDeleteWhile she is naturally attractive, and I guess can serviceably do the Dougie, it looks like her body is facing almost three different ways and all of them lead to an almost inevitable "Oops" if she moves a half an inch.

Sounds like the casting director for VS got up on the wrong side of the bed....why they felt the need to comment is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteThat SI cover is unattractive, IMO. The swimsuit is ugly beyond words.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. Kate is pretty, but not in a way that I would expect someone in her line of work to be. It has nothing to do with her size. But everything about her feel just slightly off. It's weird. :-/
As much as it hurts me to say, I have to agree with VS, she looks like a Real Housewife. And Enty, define curve. She looks like the rest of them to me. Real women come in all shapes and sizes even the itty bitt ones but she is definitely in their body category. But seriously, she looks common.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this girl is pretty. I just don't.
ReplyDeleteI HATE the "real woman" shit too! I am thin, and small boobed, so fuck off to anyone who thinks I am not a "real woman".
She doesn't look any more curvy that any other VS model. She would fit perfectly in the catalog. I don't get that last paragraph.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree, there is nothing exceptional about her. Pretty yes. But no more than most other young women.
"...she is not stick thin and is curvy and actually looks like a real woman."
ReplyDeleteUmmmm, what?? She may have larger than average tots for a model, but she has virtually no hips. Actual real women get tired of being told what real women are supposed to look like.
I do agree that her look is not incredible. She's got a killer body, a pretty face, and a kind of Playboy look going on. I feel like there are lots of models that look like her, most of them in men's mags, not on any runway.
I'm no victorias secret fan, but I don't think she has a pretty face either. she's just kind of a catapulted from obscurity youtube star. the other woman in the video w/her at the lakers game was gorgeous. I think kate upton is meh.
ReplyDeleteSorry to say but this chick is basically a playboy model with real boobs, she has no business modeling except for FMH and Maxim, and agree so tired of the real women have curve thing. Guess what Enty there is not just one type of woman, you're not less a woman if you're tall and thin.
ReplyDelete"why they felt the need to comment is beyond me" YES
ReplyDeleteApparently quite a few people feel the need to comment negatively. And assume a defensive crouch about body image. Maybe pause and ask yourselves why that is . . .
I like curvy women, but she is...off. I agree with the hair/face thing, but it looks as though her torso is too long? It might just be the cover, I'm not a fan. They have so many beautiful women to choose from. I just don't get this one.
ReplyDeleteThis is considered "curvy"? Well, then. I suppose that makes me "morbidly obese".
ReplyDeleteI, too, am fascinated with the tiny bikini. That's pretty scandalous for a SI cover, isn't it? To me it's more provocative than the body-paint cover.
ReplyDeleteAlso, agree with Misch - why the need to comment?
Don't worry y'all, this is coming from VS who hired Giselle. Giselle, who in my opinion could easily pass for a man.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the disproportionate bikini bottom that is making her body appear "off".
ReplyDeleteI think this is the worst SI cover in years, possibly ever. I do not understand why they chose this odd photo, and it looks photoshopped to death. I've only looked at Chrissy Teigen's photo collection online so far, and any of her photos are better than that cover.
ReplyDeleteShe's been described as the YouTube Jayne Mansfield, and I can see that. Big breasts, small waist, very narrow hips, athletically built with a similar earthy appeal. But Upton's face isn't as appealing Mansfield's. She's probably closer to Diana Dors in that regard: pretty, but not drop dead gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteHer face is generic but attractive and her body is good (when the photoshop out her upper ab area). That bikini is gross though.
ReplyDeleteI think she's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI like that she's fuller figured, but she does look more like a sports illustrated model than Victoria Secrets model. It's not that Kate isn't pretty, cause she is, but I always pictured Victoria Secrets models to have a more chisled face, very thin and less cutsey features. It would be a similar comparison to like making Jessica Beil a Bond Girl...or when Denise Richards was a Bond girl.

ReplyDeleteFuck I hate the term "real women."
ReplyDeleteThe bottom of that bikini is just beyond ridiculous. It's so obviously photoshopped because if it were real, she wouldn't be able to move without flashing.
This cover sucks, probably one of the worst ones. I don't give a crap if she's considered curvy, a real woman (whatever that is), this picture is tacky as hell.
ReplyDeleteExcess boobage hanging out the side of her kini top is what probably bugs me the most and the kini bottom is a joke.
If S.I. just wanted to cover nips and V, she would have looked better in three strategically placed daisies.
Oh ya, the hair is sucky too.
Not seeing how this chick is getting labeled curvy either. She just looks tall & skinny with big boobs in these photos. When I hear curvy I think of someone like Adele.
ReplyDeleteHer face does look horrid on the mag cover, IMO. She kind of reminded me of a busted Rachel Hunter on this cover.
I would LOVE to have a boyish figure. No boobs, butt or "Curves". I'm a curvy girl...but there is NOT one ounce of me that would consider her curvy. I hate when models are considered curvy....hell, I hate that word anymore. Her boobs look horrible in that top. What woman do you ever see has her boobs hanging out of a top like that. Victorias secret is right.

ReplyDeleteNone of the SI models hold a candle to the one's in the 80'/90's, IMO. Those women have beautiful FACES as well as killer bodies.
ReplyDeleteElle, Paulina, Christie Brinkley.....those women had it all!
I am glad to see I am not the only one who does not think Kate is pretty. And Amartel, it has nothing to do with insecurity, fuckyouverymuch.
'real woman' is such an ambiguous term that i truly hate the people who try to assign it to one certain body type.
ReplyDeleteand it is a terribly sexist term at that.
I too don't even understand the bottom of the bikini -- this is the first photo in my life I can remember being drawn to just looking and looking at the bikini bottom. A woman's, you know, everything starts above the placement of that thing. What a completely insane photoshop job there. WTF were they doing? I guess drawing everyone's attention to her crotch was exactly what they wanted.
ReplyDelete@parissucks -- Paulina was a GODDESS. Ditto Elle and Christy -- and none of them had gargantuan tits, either.
ReplyDeleteAmartel is a man, right? He hasn't had people informing him what "real men" should look like from toddlerhood onward. You can be a scrawny hipster in your girlfriend's jeans or a slovenly Jack Black clone in an XXL tee, and as long as you're packing a dick in your pants, no one will question your inherent masculinity. So I wouldn't expect Amartel to understand our indignation.
But I totally agree.
xoxooxox Ms Blankenship.
ReplyDelete:)
Exactly y'all. If she is "curvy" and "real" looking, then I'm a fucking cow.
ReplyDeleteI think she looks great, minus that horrific photoshop, but she's just a tiny bit larger then most stick bug models.
ok, this chick is not curvy. I agree with a couple of people that yes, she's not the waif/boyish figure type but she's not effing curvy either.
ReplyDeleteCuz like maja, I'd be considered obese and I wear a freaking size 4!
She's lovely, but let us not delude ourselves into thinking she is representative of "real women." If they put Christina Hendricks or Adele on the cover, I'd say you'd have more of an argument, Enty.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't much of a waist-hips ratio there.
ReplyDeleteit's nice to see that her vagina was apparently made by Mattel.
ReplyDelete@ Ida - LOL! You nailed it. God I hope that pic was photo-shopped. If it wasn't then she doesn't have a vagina.
Last time I checked, "real women" come in all shapes and sizes. Why do people even say "real women?" So fucking ludicrous.
ReplyDeleteI don't find the cover attractive, but to each his or her own. I'm sure the dudes who beat off to SI Swimsuit Edition love it.
I don't think Kate Upton is attractive at all; I agree that she has a very trashy look, and the "bathing suit" she is wearing on the cover enhances that. The VS comments, however, were tacky and inappropriate. Totally unnecessary. Saying nothing is always the better way to go.
ReplyDeleteto me, she looks trashy. However my husband will probably buy and laminiate the cover because he loves the 5.00 a night hooker, bleach blonde playboy bimbo look. If she talks with a liddle gurl voice, and is really really dumb, he'll you tube everything about her and all of his freinds will want her
ReplyDeleteI also wonder why they felt the need to comment at all. Just insulting a woman's "look" for the hell of it now, are we, VS?
ReplyDeleteShe looks much better in this photo
ReplyDeletehttp://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012_swimsuit/models/kate-upton/12_kate-upton_12.html
and in most of the photos in her section of the website. The one they used for the cover is the worst of the bunch. Look at the video, they for sure photo shopped the bikini bottom to make it look even smaller than it actually is.
Michael K's comments about this are HILARIOUS
ReplyDeleteShe's okay. I was watching her on Letterman last night (Fuck Big-Jaw) and she reminded me of when I saw Anna Nicole on Arsenio 20 years ago. She's not the most gracious girl but she's only 19.
ReplyDeleteShe's not spectacular looking but is attractive. She looks like the type of girl Charlie Sheen would have had as one of his goddesses a year ago.
You're already in a defense body image crouch - what better time to double down on your delusions!
ReplyDeleteBecause, uh, durrr, men don't have answer to any cultural assumptions about body image and masculinity. Yeah! Fuck Yeah! Not like slender women who are brutally outcast, constantly discriminated against and the pariahs of society. You never see a skinny girl on the cover of a magazine. Waah.
I think the point that was being made in the post was that it was nice to see a curvier woman represented on the SI cover, not that slender women are somehow not "real." Jaysus.

ReplyDelete@Amartel -- "men don't have answer to any cultural assumptions about body image and masculinity"
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly right. You don't.
Your point about slender women being more readily accepted by society than their heavier counterparts has absolutely nothing to do with what initially pissed many of us off about this post in the first place: an adult human being with a vagina IS "womanly", despite how alluring she may or may not be to the opposite sex. Femininity does not depend on male attraction.
And Kate Upton really isn't much curvier than any of the other women who've appeared on the cover of SI during the past few years. She may be a tad more petite, but the basic formula is still there: boobs, smile, boobs, hair, boobs.
I'm a 49-year old guy, and my humble opinion is that she is an awesome-looking package. But I am not looking too hard, because she's two years younger than my son and two years older than my daughter, and it just seems unsavory.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a snide comment that would be made off the cuff to someone at fashino week, which would make sense since it is in NYC right now. I don't know that this was intended to go public, it does seem unnecessarily bitchy though.
ReplyDeleteAgee with those that say Kate Uptonn does not equal curvy in my world... she's a butter face
On the cover, she looks like a Top Gun-era Kelly McGillis.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I are in separate rooms, both on the Internet, but he's reading some other site. And he just yelled out, "So this Kate Upton is pretty hot, huh?" I happen to agree: I think she's cute as a button, with a gorgeous body. That said, I agree with other posters about the term "real woman." Adele, Christina Hendricks, Sofia Vergara, Eva Longoria, Shakira - each is a gorgeous woman. None is more "real" than another, and I think most would agree with that statement, too.
ReplyDeleteI first saw this woman a few days ago as I was watching the pre-Super Bowl interviews on NFL Network.
ReplyDeleteI had to rewind and check if I'd heard it right when they said she was a model: She looked rough as all get out, the face wasn't pretty, the body wasn't elegant, and she had a horrible dye job.
She looked overall trashy, and for someone who remembers the supermodels of the 90s, this is not what a "model" looks like by any stretch of the imagination.
And the most surprising thing is that she's apparently still in her teens, but looks 10 years older.
I love all these comments from the gals on here that say she's unattractive. Right. Keep fooling yourselves there darling, even though that won't make you more attractive or less bitter.
ReplyDelete@Maja - I had the same thought...those hips are curvy?
ReplyDeleteI think she's beautiful! I don't understand why VS would say that since she's modeled for them before?
Michael K's take on tos is gold.
jadedentrepreneur, beauty is personal taste. Every woman here has talked about women they find to be beautiful, so it is NOT about bitterness. Some of us happen to not find THIS woman to be pretty. When you say YOU do, I don't call you an asshole, or a freak who would never get laid by anyone who looks like her, so you can go fuck yourself, and we can all have our own opinions about who we think is pretty.
ReplyDelete^^Well said.
ReplyDeleteOn a somewhat-related note, here's a brief list of MEN I personally find unattractive: Daniel Craig, Bradley Cooper, and David Beckham. But I am well-aware of how over half the women I know would gladly bone those dudes.
Beauty, when it comes to both genders, is a wholly subjective thing.
^^^Second the, 'well said'.
ReplyDeleteI'm with those also wondering why VS even found the need to pipe in with their two-cents.
