Sacha Baron Cohen Is My Hero
Do I really need to post anything other than the photo? Look at the anger on Ryan Seacrest's face. Giuliana thought it was great. Ryan not so much. Note to Academy security guards. When you make a guy dumpy out the rest of his urn of ashes, perhaps you should make him do it someplace other than the middle of the red carpet.

ReplyDeletemeh, I just don't think it was that funny. I think SBC is capable of much more funny bits.
ReplyDeleteIt was funny watching the security try and vacum it up around all the stars and Ryan. I don't get why people are saying it was staged.
I do know that Ryan will never do a "Keeping up with the Cohens" on E!
I so disagree. I thought it was stupid stupid stupid. And of course Ryan Seacrest was angry. I was angry! He is trying to do his job, something I think we mostly agree he does very well, and works very hard at. AND he is being watched by how many viewers? I think he handled the situation extremely well; his co-workers were idiots to laugh(let's not even mention that Kelly Osbourne talked over everyone and Giuliana could not disguise her annoyance!) I even liked Jennifer Lopez a little for the sympathy she showed him. I HATE how crass we have become. Where is our humanity, our kindness??
ReplyDeleteWhatev, seems childish to me.
ReplyDeleteEverything Cheryl said. Can't we show some grace and dignity at the movie industry's top awards show? Leave the stunts for the grammy's or golden globes. The Oscars should be about class and style, not SBC looking for a cheap publicity stunt.
ReplyDeleteBetween Enty's reaction to SBC and the Jennifer Aniston post below, I'm beginning to think we don't see eye to eye. :(
I thought it was a lame trick. Does anyone know if Sacha left after that?
ReplyDeleteThe academy is going to be so pissed off at him now, I bet he doesn't get invited back. I don't think it was a stunt, based on Ryan's reaction (and lack of another tux).
and in this post 9/11 world and beinga New Yorker. I don't really need to see powder floating around. You would of thought security would of checked if anything was in the urn.
ReplyDeleteIf anything, the head of security dropped the ball on this one and SBC got over on them. egg.on.face.
I didn't like Andy Kaufman back in the day, I still don't care for this type of humor. Deep into comedic (supposed) character annoys the shit out of me.
ReplyDeleteStupid!
ReplyDeleteI thought the whole thing was OTT but...... I am glad he got Ryan Seacrust. I can't stand him. I loved how Melanie Griffith kept looking down worrying about getting bisquick on her gown.
ReplyDeleteSeacrest brings us the Kuntrashians every week. This is the least the little shit deserves. Fuck humanity and kindness (on a gossip blog? really??).
ReplyDeleteIt seems that we're supposed to get used to psychopathy and sociopathy and that type of behavior, responding as if it is normal. With Andy, at the time, it was somewhat humorous. SBC needs new tricks.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Vicki. I hate that Ryan has forced that horrible family on us. He always seemed like a nice guy, but the Kartrashians are unforgiveable.
ReplyDeleteIm not a fan of Ryan but i will give him credit for keeping his cool if it wasnt staged. I blame the academy for even letting sasha come as a character what did they expect to happen.
ReplyDeleteI hate to admit this but I laughed my ass off because seriously how could you not?
ReplyDeleteBut I do feel kinda bad for RS I don't think he was in on this stunt and who wouldn't be angry in the same situation.
Ryan brought us the Kardashians so I have little respect for him, but SBC did cheapen the red carpet with this stunt.
Don't find sbc funny and thought the bit pretty much ruined the rest of E!'s red carpet coverage.
ReplyDeleteSome of ya'll are taking this waaaay too seriously.
ReplyDeleteThese people make millions of dollars for working less than a quarter of the year THEN get to dress up in priceless jewels and gowns and congrats themselves for their accomplishments with shiny gold awards?! This is the definition of narcissism and self-entitlement with a healthy dose of delusions of grandeur thrown in.
Also, Ryan Seacrest introducing us to the Kardashians and being part of American Idol has prolly helped to lower to average IQ in the US.
In short, SBC doing a little bit like this really shows how silly these fancy award ceremonies really are and also how uptight and humorless many people can be.
I mean come on- I saw news reports on this titled SBC spills Bisquick (ashes) on Ryan Seacrest's Burberry suit! Eye roll

ReplyDeleteI agree with both sides. Ryan brought us the Kartrashians and I would love to dump something on him for that. However, this was not the time or place to pull a stunt like that. I realize old Hollywood glamour is long gone but this guy (SBC) has a few screws loose and should not be allowed to ruin someone's clothes like that.
ReplyDeleteThis incident is proof absolute and complete that SBC is an unfunny, untalented, self important, piece of garbage.
ReplyDeleteThe most unfortunate part of the incident was that neither Ryan or Security gave him the major league tune up he deserves on the spot.
The world would be a better place without SBC and those who think he is the least bit funny need to take a very long look in the mirror.
@BigMama you are right about Andy Kaufman they both confuse stupidity with humor.
Enty, i gotta disagree.. Seacrest works hard, very hard.. I don't live in the US anymore, but even i know how hard the man works.. and what Cohen did was so so disrespectful and just plain stupid.. it was not funny and in the spirit of such an elegant event as the Oscars, and what it represents for cinema worldwide, it was just really wrong. Boo!
ReplyDeleteSacha Baron Cohen did not attend the actual Oscars event, instead he left after the carpet and did dinner at the Vanity Fair I believe.
ReplyDeleteRead it on Gawker somewhere... anyway, not that he was MADE to leave, just that he didn't stay for the show (which would be admittedly long and boring, particularly for SBC).
AND no, I don't think it was pre-arranged, Seacrest looked PISSED but seemed to clean up remarkably quickly
ReplyDeletenot true hunter, SBC was supposed to get changed and be at the show to support Hugo which he was part of the cast.
ReplyDeleteSo that all points to (to me) is he got the boot after the stunt. I don't blame the Academy they gave him an inch and he took a mile. he could of gone up and down cracking jokes and that would of been much funnier then throwing pancake mix around. Funny, as an Englishman he didn't try to pull that stunt at the BAFTAs.
Ryan was CLEARLY not amused. I'm surprised they were able to clean up his suit so quickly and well.
ReplyDeleteBottom line is, it just was not a funny stunt. If it were humorous, it might be forgivable. The only remotely funny thing was the notion of "Kim Jong Il finally getting to go to the Oscars," but other than that, my husband and I sat there going, "well, that was stupid."
I agree with what KLTX said above. It pretty much closed down the red carpet interviews on E and that's what I was friggin tuning in to watch, not all the women (mostly) folk talking about the fashion. I thought that was what the Fashion Police show is for. So, boo to SBC for ruining that. I also think that Ryan Seacrest was a good sport about it.
ReplyDeleteDear Sacha - grow up. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteEverything Jasmine said.
ReplyDeleteWe're talking about scattered Bisquick, not anthrax. And it seems kinda hyperbolic to toss around terms like sociopathy and psychopathy. It's not like he kicked Uggie or anything. C'mon.
Yeah, it was kinda stupid and very rude, but this is SASHA BARON COHEN we're talking about. He's made a good living by punking the hell out of people. WTF did they EXPECT? Have they SEEN Ali G? Borat? Bruno?
Seacrest is worth a kajillion dollars. All he had to do was whip out his diamond-encrusted phone and Burberry would have probably delivered a new tux to him immediately. I'm not going to cry a river for that dude.
In terms of scandalous appearances at awards ceremonies, I'll save my outrage for the ass-kissing of Chris Brown at the Grammy's.
i like how a few people here are borrowing the feelings or emotions of someone they don't know, nor will ever know. why even sympathize with ryan seacrest? are your lives so dull and boring you need to pretend to relate to and defend him?
ReplyDeleteit's all entertainment, folks.
Love him or hate him, Ryan handled it well.
ReplyDeleteNow if it would have been Joan Rivers....
I don't remember who compared SBC to Andy Kaufman, but that is right on. I see the humor in what he did, and the people who "get" him will, too.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, Ryan was a fall guy and he handled himself with extreme poise. I think Guiliana was trying to say that it would raise his profile even more that SBC chose him to be a part of this stunt...but Ryan was just trying to recover and I'm sure didn't appreciate her point of view. He might today, however. I have nothing to say about Kelly Osbourne except, why IS she? That is something I don't get.
Ryan is a champ, SBC really is darkly funny and I really thought the people escorting SBC out were part of the plan. If not, letting an unidentified powder fly around a crowd of people is, well, not bright.
Loved it - and that whiney little ass brought up the subject in every. single. interview. after it happened. Even after his jacket was cleaned up, instead of interviewing people, he would bring it up.
ReplyDeleteSuch a little cry baby.
LMAO @ people worried about the fact there was "powder" allowed past security. Really shows how ridiculous we've become. Kind of like the people on the plane that heard "Happy birthday BOMB" instead of "Mom" then went and complained. Seriously, chill the eff out.
ReplyDeleteI think they call it empathy @kathrynnova.
ReplyDeleteAside from whether or not it was over the line, it just wasn't funny.
I agree with bigmama- it just wasn't funny, it was so lame it was embarassing. Some comedians either cant or wont turn it off. If the stunt was hilarious, that wld hv been diff story. Btw, I dont enjoy this english over the top humor either.
ReplyDeleteNot funny at all. Ryan reacted like a poised professional should have.
ReplyDelete@moondancekat - Are you sure that's what shut down E's red carpet? I assumed that ABC embargoed the red carpet so that we would be forced to watch their people. That said, I was pissed when I actually got to sit down with a glass of wine, I had to watch the Fashion Police critique pictures of the red carpet. Worst red carpet ever!!!
ReplyDeleteI loathe the Kardashians, but I don't hate on Ryan Seacrest. He seems like a hardworking fella. SBC seems so annoying. I thought it was juvenile. But, I agree with earlier posters that the Oscars are so pretentious, and sometimes these people do need a good prank to deflate their uber-sized egos.
Granted, it was probably the wrong setting, but isn't Seacrest the same guy who we used to call a jack*** when he asked incredibly inappropriate questions on the red carpet at such events? Didn't he ask someone if they were still breast feeding or something on live TV at a red carpet event? I remember watching it with a group of folks and us commenting that it was not some awkward intrusive mistake, but yet another instance of his ego and immaturity on display. It would be poetic justice if the personhe asked was the mom of SBC's newborn.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit it - I thought it was funnier than shyt to see Kim Jong Ill's supposed ashed dumped on Ryan. Wish I would have seen it in person! It was the only thing I found interesting about the whole show, but I turned it off only about 30mins into the show. Something about watching millionaires rewarding each other just didn't seem that interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteIt was 2007 and Seacrest asked Jessica Alba on the red carpet if she was planning to breast feed. Seriously? I'm not happy the guy got doused in Bisquick, but its not like SBC did this to Gandhi. Look at the perspective.
ReplyDeleteJasmine said it perfectly. This is the Oscars, not the Nobel Prize. These over indulged millionaires need to get over themselves.
ReplyDelete@califlady - I would pay %50.00 cash money to see someone do that to Joan Rivers.
ReplyDeleteI'd be SUPER pissed if someone threw shit like that on me too. Especially when I was dressed for an event where presumably, I'd paid a lot of money for what I was wearing.
ReplyDeleteAnd really, why be pissed at Seacrest for bring the Kardashians to the world - be pissed at the people who watch it and keep it on the air if you're going to be annoyed with anyone.
Psychopathy? Sociopathy? Really? It was a juvenile, ill-conceived publicity stunt, not an assassination attempt.
ReplyDeleteSo glad I missed it. Nothing funny in my view of SBC.
ReplyDeleteMy problem isn't that it was inappropriate, it is that it just wasn't funny.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for either one of them, so I would have been happier without them. BUT, I will say Ryan is pretty good at his job, which he was doing when this was thrust upon him, so to speak.
ReplyDeleteThen again, as I pointed out to a FB friend, it's his fault that Kris Jenner was seen on the red carpet.
Agree wholeheartedly with Princess and Shay - Seacrest was visibly PISSED OFF and pouted through the rest of his interviews. He was a such whiney little pussy - Guiliana Rancic couldn’t contain her glee and neither could I. I bet his Beard Julianne Hough laughed her ass off, too. Sure the whole stunt was amateur but what do you expect out of SBC?! His handling of the situation showed a complete lack of grace, humor or wit. Showed himself for what he truly is.
ReplyDeleteLighten up...geez.
ReplyDeleteRyan KNEW something was going to occur, he just didn't know what but he AGREED to it prior, then acted like a fkn whiny baby after the fact.
I almost fell off my chair when Tina Fey said he "was a good sport" LOL.
not quite, Tina.
And Guliana and Kelly could. not.stop.laughing.
Enty has part of this story wrong. Another part of SBC's bit was attempting to pour the remaining ashes on to the carpet, but security stopped him and took the urn away. Security did not tell him to dump the ashes out.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't funny, it was selfish. People had to walk there and someone could have slipped. Not only did he cause problems for E's coverage, but he caused problems for the foreign journalists who had the spot next to Seacrest and had a bigger pile of crap on their part of the carpet. No one stopped to be interviewed there because of the mess it was making of people's clothes. Fine make fun of Seacrest and inconvenience his wealth and resources, but why screw it up for someone who had to travel here from outside the country?
I didn't see that Seacrest was pissed. He seemed to be handling it very well in my eyes. With all the practice he's had in the last few years, he's become very good at the red carpet interviews and I was actually enjoying him last night. He had interesting, well informed questions for the most obscure people so either he did great research or he had great people talking in his earpiece. Knowing how hard he works, I would suspect both.
As for the Kartrashians, yes he put them on the air, but a lot of stuff gets put on TV, and the stuff that no one watches goes away. Blame the audience too.
Neither of these two looked good after this stupid stunt, but Sacha Baron Cohen looked far worse. It's too bad Seacrest didn't have the wherewithal to respond more gracefully, he did himself no favors. He looked humorless when he could have looked like a good sport and turned all the attention to what an asswipe SBC is. Cohen's actions were egregious. He wasn't funny, he looked like an A-1 douche to begin with, and his antics were idiotic in the extreme. A definite low point for the Oscars.
ReplyDeleteI had the Oscars on in the background while doing some work last night, and from what I saw, it was a big snooze. These people take themselves way too seriously, which is why I sort of enjoy that there was a little bit of f*ckery, especially where Seacrest is involved. It's his karma for the Kardashians and more. I mean, he is where he is because he was Merv Griffin's boy toy at one point.
ReplyDelete...and, of course, I missed the whole thing because I went out to the kitchen to get some dinner. :-(
ReplyDeleteI like SBC just fine, and think he's great at taking the piss out of people and events, but this seems silly and not worth spoiling perfectly good Bisquick (do we know that's what it was?). He could have just stayed in character & kept up w/the schtick without opening the urn, which would have worked better IMO; he also seems to be going the Andy Kaufman route in terms of pushing more and more of people's buttons, which could backfire really badly on him some time--for the sake of his family, let's hope it doesn't end w/serious injury. He DID get people talking, which was his mail goal, so 1 point for him on that score...
Now, I didn't see Ryan's reaction, and can't be bothered to YouTube it, but if he really did act pissy for the rest of his stretch on the red carpet, he shouldn't have--no matter what, you need to brush yourself off, suck it up, and keep going; it's the classic showbiz rule that "the show must go on."
(Oh, and Academy? Next time, you might want to keep a few Dustbusters at the ready, just in case, 'cause next time it might be one of the celebs spilling their coke/smack stash...or else just invite LiLo along to hoover it all up, eh?)
Wow. I guess its true what they say everyone sees things differently.
ReplyDelete@jasmine @idaB @davesmuse I'm with you. It wasn't hilarious, no. But it was pretty funny. And this is the Oscars, the height of pretention and self-importance, even the host admitted last night that its a show where millionaires give each other awards. So the whole thing is a promotional stunt essentially for some of the most coddled people on the planet. I don't understand why it isn't ok for someone to lighten the mood. Come on, the cremated ashes of Kim Jong-Il going to the Oscars..... that's funny! And powder spilling on the Oscar red carpet... that's also funny too.
And Ryan was totally pissed. While I do think the thing was orchestrated (with Academy partipation in fact, so if those foreign journalists or others are pissed I don't think its just SBC who they should hold accountable) to get a certain demographic I don't think Ryan knew exactly what was going to happen until it did, and it was hilarious watching him turn the next several interviews into that, while trying to seem like a good sport but so obviously not one. I could literally hear him thinking "not on my Burberry!" Funny to see G and Kelly laughing hysterically about it too. Just as funny as the repeated, not over the top at all references to Ryan's girlfriend in last night's telecast.
I found it amusing...people take that ess too seriously. Also, if ryan was the consumate professional that people appear to take him as, he wouldnt have been so pissy the rest of the evening.
ReplyDeleteThe stunt was kinda funny. Ryan is kinda of a dick but it would have really been delicious if Sasha could have dumped it on La Jolie, although he would have really gotten into a shitload of trouble for that. Brad would probably have kicked him in the throat or something.
ReplyDeleteMore puzzling than why an extremely pious man engages in these sorts of stunts is why Bisquick? Why not flour?
"I'll save my outrage for the ass-kissing of Chris Brown at the Grammy's."
ReplyDeleteAMEN!
I thought Ryan handled it pretty well all in all. I didn't think it was funny in the context of the red carpet, but I think it will be quite funny in the context of the film, when we've had the proper build-up of this character.
The guards didn't have him dump it out - he dumped it himself as they were pulling him off of Ryan.
"...it would have really been delicious if Sasha could have dumped it on La Jolie..."
ReplyDeleteOh, hell yes!!! It was painful to watch her put on that fake face and pretend to be nice to the interviewers when it was obvious she couldn't stand having to talk to them. She's got a huge bitch stick up her ass. But I guess I'd be pretty bitchy too if I were only eating once a week.
I don't think publicly humiliating someone is funny. I also have no problem with the wealth of the people involved, if I could have that money I would. I wonder how SBC would have felt if someone had dumped that powder on his wife. Also, a lot of those gowns and suits are borrowed, there is a duty of care to keep them in a decent state. I would have been very upset if I had gone to all that effort to get dressed up and that happened to me. No different to bullying. Why couldn't SBC dump the ashes on himself and then continue with interviews? Much funnier, but then he couldn't get pretty for the show.
ReplyDeleteNever cared for him or that type of humor. Now I like him less.
ReplyDeleteI agree with @Jasmine and @Ida about this. In the pre-show thread people were saying that the E! coverage was boring before that anyway.... I would hope that anyone who is upset enough by this to complain would also be complaing to their elected officials about things that really do matter. I know I do!
ReplyDeletehopping off my soapbox and looking forward to a Martini!
Online late last night I watched an interview with Brian Glazer, the co-producer of this year's Academy Awards, and he said SBC was "talked to," promised to maintain decorum during the actual ceremony, and was allowed in, and kept his word (behaved himself). So apparently he was still there after this prank.
ReplyDeleteI'm didn't see the E! Red Carpet coverage, so I just now watched the video. I'm kind of going back and forth between thinking this was kind of funny (mostly for Seacrest's reaction) and bad. Clearly, he was NOT happy about it. But he's Ryan Seacrest. Can't he snap his fingers and have a new jacket appear?
ReplyDeleteSo one filthy rich guy pissing off another filthy rich guy. Meh.
ReplyDeleteI didn't find it humorous or appropriate for the red carpet. Especially when people are dressed up and when someone is interviewing. Not funny. Too big of an event. I actually thought Ryan Seacrest handled it very well. If he seems pissed off, can you blame him. Anyone would be. I personally would have punched Sasha out. Not funny at all.
ReplyDeleteRude -- I'm glad Ryan happened to be in the business long enough to have another change on site. But my God. Imagine if SBC had done that to anyone else who did not, and this was their big Academy Award nomination night or whatever. What an ass.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but SBC wouldn't have done it to some newbie at their first Oscars, and especially not to a nominee. It's Ryan Seacrest - who gives a fuck? Some people are taking this way to seriously. It's ok to lighten the mood at this very stuffy event.
ReplyDeleteIMO, the funniest part of this whole bit was Tina Fey crossing herself as she stepped over the "ashes". I love that woman.
Oh yeah, and to whomever complained that borrowed clothes shouldn't be targeted because they have to be cared for in a specific way - PLEASE. First of all, Burberry was probably not expecting this suit back. It's not a $50,000 hand beaded couture gown. It's a black blazer. Second, it's not like they're gonna send him a bill from the dry cleaners. Thirdly, between Seacrest wearing their crap on the red carpet and all the headlines about it being a Burberry suit which was flour-bombed, they couldn't buy this kind of publicity. Lastly, I don't reserve much sympathy for multi-millionaires who have designers give or lend them clothes. Just fuck off with that right now.
ReplyDelete
