Unless you are a baseball fan, you might not remember Oil Can Boyd, but the former major league pitcher was on a radio show yesterday and admitted that he used cocaine before almost every one of his major league starts and there were a lot of them. He also admitted to using coke during baseball games and that he would often stay up until 3 or 4am before games doing coke because he could not sleep. Umm, if you stay up using coke then of course you would not be able to sleep. He also said that he never took one drug test the entire time he played and that people would tell him he needed to go to rehab but he never listened. In his career he won 78 games and lost 77. That is a bunch of coke.
Wonder if he is broke now?...

@Patty, "Oil Can" means "Beer Can" where he grew up, apparently he like beer a lot too.
ReplyDeleteMakes me wonder how many kilos of coke the two teams playing in the 1986 World Series went through. The Mets had a bunch of notorious cokeheads in their line-up and I know for a fact that the Boston guys could hold their own with the nose candy. *cough*Clemens*cough*
ReplyDelete@ Sue Ellen - I think it's PCP that has the rep for jumping off of roofs. I took a lot of acid in my 20's and one can develop a tolerance for it. Doc Ellis was doing a lot of drugs.

ReplyDeleteI met him a few years ago......he and some other retired Red Sox played a charity softball game against our town firefighters. He looks exactly like he looks in this picture...he also played well, and signed a ton of autographs for the kids.......

ReplyDeleteHe speaks from a world born from the greenies and other substances near to the same effect. I wasn't shocked, because, it only makes sense. Keith Hernandez was an out growth from those white knight nose days. Oil Can was one hell of a pitcher, and it's a sad testament to the talent he wasted being wasted. I still dig him.

ReplyDeleteBaseball stats are a little funky. His team can be atrocious on offense, but the pitcher who played the most innings or gave up the most hits (or the only hit or deciding hit)is given the 'loss'.
ReplyDeleteSimilarly, pitchers on a team with terrific hitters can have great stats, as long as their team wins. Even if that pitcher gives up TONS of hits.
But a pitcher can also get wins by simply being a great pitcher and having an amazing number of strike-outs.
So it's not really the numbers, it's how they came about in each game. You kind of had to be there to see how good or great a pitcher is or was.

I might recall reading that Babe Ruth also used during games. I know I read he'd eat like a dozen hot dogs and swig beers while playing. Ahh, the good ol', bad ol' days...
