Lana Del Rey Lives On Her Ex-Boyfriend's Couch

Lana Del Rey gave an interview this week and in it she says she lives on the couch of her ex-boyfriend. Really? Maybe she did and maybe she thinks it makes her sound more cool, but I doubt she has spent the night on his couch in a few months. First, she has a new boyfriend and second she has sold enough records where her record company is probably advancing her a few more bucks and will wait to get paid back until she starts touring.

  1. Daddy bought her a record deal, but he won't buy her an apartment?

    Bitch, please.

  2. I don't really get her. Can someone explain her appeal? I've only really heard two of her songs but neither really grabbed at me. Does she have other stuff maybe I'm missing?

  3. Who IS this person I keep hearing about?

  4. anything that has to do with Lana is a corporate package that has nothing to do with reality.

  5. Enough of this woman and her 'I'm so poor, look at my indy cred' lies. Why do her fans put up with this and why is she continuing to do it? Is she not aware of the internet and the info that can be found there? I don't care what her music is like, I will not support this fraud with my money or my time.

  6. I thought I was the only one sick her, thank you.

  7. I like her. Can't sing live, but I'm not going to her concerts. Listening to her on YouTube, she's got some interesting songs.

All artists signed to major deals are manufactured on some level. Hers is more upfront, IMO. The woman isn't that obtuse. Anyone could find out her previous go at the music industry within two minutes. Same with Katy Perry and Bruno Mars, who had to try 3-4 times before striking it big.

If you don't want to support her, cool. But they're all frauds, you know. Look at Whitney Houston (RIP).

  8. Lauren, thank you. I've never heard of her either. Off to google her, well, actually not, 'cause I really don't care.

  9. I am so sick of this chick. Her people need to stop with the constant publicity grabs. I haven't been able to read a blog since her SNL performance without seeing her name thrust into my face. Bitch, please. You are not the next Adele. Yes, someone was trying to insinuate that on another site yesterday. Cuz, she keeps it real.

  10. I really, truly thought she was a joke on SNL. I thought it was Kristin Wiig, I thought I was seeing a first-time-ever deal where the musical guest was actually a sketch.

Never heard of her before that. I don't like her voice and her stage presence sucks. I read later that she got the gig based on her YouTube popularity. I'm such a fan of SNL, I stick with them even when the cast is iffy, but they're making me sad with their musical guest choices.

And No, she's not living on someone's couch. Give me a break. Next she'll say that she's only slept with four men. Or that she's never put makeup on herself. Please.

  11. Her music is soooo boring. I can't believe people think she's so great. And she said her lips are all natural. Please!

    ReplyDelete
  12. yes Layna, musical acts are manufactured and their images are created, but this one constantly pretending to be oh so poor when she comes from a rich family is a complete joke. And it's insulting too.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @FS: Who cares? I don't. I can read, and I assume that 99% of everyone else can, too. I know everything around her his plastic and false. It doesn't bother me. Heck, it's what interests me. Can she pull it off? This 180-degree of her life and previous music? Who knows, and the fun is in watching. And if she has a few catchy songs in the process, all the better.

She's a disposable pop star in a sea of disposable pop stars. Let her be fake. The rest of them are, too.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Her popularity is manufactured, her talent is manufactured, her lips are manufactured and her name is manufactured.

    ReplyDelete
  15. So she's the female Vanilla Ice? (Or Smouse, for those of you who watch Angry Boys.) Pretending to be "street" when she's actually a trust-fund kid?

I don't know much about her other than it seems she's being forced upon us. Every review I've read of her album says it sucks but yet I seem to see her face & her name everywhere. Maybe the record company put a lot of money into her and feel the need to do whatever it takes to recoup the costs?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well obviously I care, durrrrrr. I just have a low tolerance for BS like that, it's completely unnecessary. But hey, you have fun with it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, 100% manufactured but the music biz was NOT always that way. And now the big music houses wonder why they're losing business when they have an outdated model and they ignore real talent. I'll give THAT a BITCH PLEASE!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gee, thanks FS! Don't know what I'd do without your approval.

    ReplyDelete
  19. She shows up once or twice a day on my ONTD feed and it ticks me off everytime I see her name. It's obvious that she is being packaged for mass consumption, but I think the constant barrage is backfiring. She obvously doesn't have the talent to back it up.

    Go away!

  20. Isn't this that chick who was on SNL and everyone was making fun of her because she can't sing and sounded like a dying cow?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep. Then Kristen Wiig played her on Weekend Update a couple of weeks later.

  23. I don't know. All the vitriolic backlash is beginning to make me LIKE her. All she's done is release a mediocre album. It's not as if she's Chris Brown or something!

Yes, she's a trust fund kid, but so was Lady Gaga. I LOVE Gaga, but her woe-is-me, I used to be a gutter-dwelling cokehead sob stories are pretty ridiculous, too. Still, I know plenty of rich kids who ended up hanging out with stoners and crashing in cookie cutter apartments once they left the nest.

In an industry full of solo acts with names like Bon Iver, Lil' Bow Wow, Skrillex, Deadmau5, and Ke$ha, what's one more ridiculous moniker to add to the pile?

And yeah, maybe she's had work done on her lips. But the majority of other female pop stars have had their tits jacked-up. LDR just concentrated on her face instead of her chest.

Dumb question: could she just be using that Lip Venom stuff I always see at Sephora? I tried it one time and it seriously looked like someone had punched me in the mouth.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lip Venom does jack up the lips that much.

She sounds very feminist, angsty, 90's grunge. I can't like someone who is being shoved down my throat. Too much already.

    ReplyDelete
  25. She should have said she was living in the same car that Jewel used to live in. That would have at least been creative.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ugh, I tried that lip venom too once. I thought my lips were going to explode.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Jessie -- Why is "feminist" a negative word? Why do you associate it with angst and anger? I'm asking honestly. To me, it's a word I equate with pride, self-confidence, and justified defiance.

  28. I like her. I have never seen nor looked for her bio. I have never heard her claim she was poor. I have never bothered to care what her dad does or how much money he has or how she was discovered or if she is manufactured. Just like every other artist I like, I judge her on her music. And I like it. Its not popular to do so apparently, but I have never given a shit what other people think. Let me ask you haters, do you care about the back story of every artist you like this much? Do you know about Led Zepplins parents or care about Stings/Bono's real name? Hate her music if you must but this shallow hatred of arbitrary petty standards that I am sure you don't hold the rest of musicdom to is simply ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think you can throw Bon Iver in the same category as this girl. Bon Iver is a band, not a solo act. And their name means "good winter" in french, its not supposed to be a stage name or anything like that. Justin Vernon headlines the band and some of the other members change around as they tour, but they've also been on the indie circuit for years. I've had them on my ipod since 2008. Their populatity and grammy win has really kind of been a fluke. Or not a fluke, but unexpected. Especially since they are far from being a "new artist". New to some, but defiitely not new to others seeing as how they are have two albums under their belt.

  30. Hahah @Maja & @Vicki.

All I know of her was a YouTube video of her horrid SNL performance. She doesn't interest me enough to find out any more so I'll move on.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like her too. I don't quite understand all of the hate. she's an introverted singer and not really a 'entertainer' of the katy perry variety.

she didn't do well on sat. night live, but so what? she did a nice job later on letterman and there are some other live performances on youtube that are lovely, a few from bbc one (I think).

so much of what makes one like or not like music is subjective, but her haters would have you believe that she is objectively bad. but, objectively, she can sing on key w/o autotune and has a decent range. I like her voice.

w/all of the auto tune darlings out there, and yes, I'm looking at you kanye and madonna, who would sound awful w/o technology making their voices sound good, why people are picking on lana is beyond me. yes, I guess her daddy is rich (and her mother probably good looking), and that would make an indie career easier, but if you were to disregard her for that, then you'll have to disregard tolstoy too. his daddy's money made it much easier for him to have a literary career.

  32. @bnl1016 -- I didn't know Bon Iver was an actual *band* -- it was my impression that it was just one dude (with a slliiiiiightly pretentious name). Kinda like Bright Eyes. I'll take your word for it, though -- and I DO think it's cool that someone OTHER than Nicki Minaj won. Good God.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have never heard of her either.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Ida - Bright Eyes is a band too :-) Its a trio. Although, them I'm not really a fan of. Conor Oberst gets on my nerves because he IS pretentious.

Indie music is kinda my thing. Well, no, indie folk music is kinda my thing. I'm friendly with some handlers of a former Indie (sadly now more mainstream) artist which has allowed me to meet alot of fun people in that world. And some not so fun people. Pretentious is a great word you used for those kinds of people.

  35. Who? Who? Who? Jason Mraz?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nope. Smaller than Jason Mraz. Here's a hint if anyone cares: Its one guy, but he doesn't perform under his name. He does sound like a band. He had a song on one of Twilight soundtracks.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @bnl1016 -- I would like Bright Eyes a LOT more if Conor Oberst could sing worth a shit, because I think he's an amazing songwriter. "Bowl of Oranges" is such a gorgeous song.

ALL I want to know is this: if you've met Neko Case, is she a sweet person? Because I would seriously give her a kidney.

    ReplyDelete
  38. P.S. You are TOTALLY talking about Iron and Wine. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Ida - Regarding Conor Oberst - EXACTLY! And unfortunately in the indie folk world all you need to be able to do is write good songs and play instruments. Being able to actually sing is irrevelent. I could list so many indie artists that fall into that category.

I haven't met Neko Case but I do adore her. I know people that know her or have met her and they say she's a complete doll.

And you hit the nail right on the head. I am friendly with Mr Sam Beam aka Iron & Wine.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @bnl1016 -- Yeah, it's as if Bob Dylan gave whiny wordsmiths across the globe permission to seek recording contracts. :-) Not that I DON'T love Dylan (Desire is definitely my absolute favorite album), but he's not exactly, say, Roy Orbison. And Conor sure ain't Bob...though he should thank Bob for the career he has today.

I'm glad to know that Neko has such a good rep, because I am legitimately obsessed with her. She comes across as so fiery-spirited and warmhearted. And the woman is a DAMN good songwriter, too -- better than Conor, IMO.

Ha! I knew you were talking about Sam Beam. :-) There are only a handful of musicians who *aren't* totally desperate to get their original names out there in the media.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The funny thing about Sam is that he never even meant to be a recoding artist. His real passion was film making. He did the music on the side and did a bunch of home recordings that got out and he just started to pick up followers and it just went from there. He's got five kids (all girls) to feed so when the opportunity was there, he took it because it was a means to an end. And when you talk to him he's so grateful for everything. He's hands down the most down to earth musician I've ever met.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What gets me is that her hypocrisy is so blatant. At least the other fakes don't work so hard to pretend they're not faking. Her "I don't want to be a musician, I don't want fame, I don't care about any of this" schtick is beyond bullshit.

It seems like Bon Iver has been around forever. The band has always been huge on indie radio.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Shes the industry developed version of regina spektor

    ReplyDelete
  44. ITA ln Neko. She. An do no wrong and she was hilarious on WAIT. WAIT DON'T TELL ME. I wanna party with her.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I see I'm not the only one who thought, "Who is she, exactly?"

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think the issues with Lana Del Rey boil down to the fact that is being sold as authentic to a crowd very conscious with issues of authenticity. However one feels about her music though, it feels like the equivalent of selling milk to a vegan. Whereas artists that others have mentioned here (Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Kesha, Lady Gaga) are being marketed as mainstream artists to an audience less concerned with who the artist is and the story s/he is peddling.

But I mainly posted because I also feel the need to get on the Neko Case love train. I love, love, love her. She is talented, cool, and lovely. And I can't wait for her next album.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I just learned a lot in this thread. Didn't know Vanilla Ice & GaGa were trust fund kids!

I don't care about a singer's background if they can sing. Sure, it makes for a good story, hearing things like Jewel living in her car before making it big, but it didn't really influence my opinion about her. I had really only heard the Video Games song before LDR was on SNL, but she did sound awful live. :-/ I love that Kristin Wiig skit & I think we can all safely agree that Ashlee Simpson was SNL's worst musical guest.

@BNL, I love when you share stories. I love I&W, so it's nice to hear what a nice guy he is.
