Judi Dench Going Blind

Judi Dench's eyesight is getting so bad that at age 77 she is unable to read her scripts. She told The Daily Mirror that she has macular degeneration which is a big fancy word that means your eyes are losing their sight and you can go blind. She says that she has friends or family or her agent read the scripts to her. She says the thing she hates about it all is that when she goes to dinner she can't see the person she is eating with. Have I told you how much I love Judi Dench? She is amazing. It also made me realize that I need to start dating people who have this macular degeneration because they would not be able to see me.

  1. This is horrible news! If necessary, I will go to her house every day and tell her how great she looks (and read her scripts).

  2. I don't get it. My mother has the same condition and was treated for several years quite aggressively and is in total remission. The only people who should be losing their sight are people who do not have access to healthcare.

  3. EmEyeKay, I would gladly be one of her assistants/handmaidens.

My mother has it, too, and doesn't have the money to get treated.

  4. My Dad had macular degeneration in one eye before he died. It scared the shit out of me to think of him going blind....what it is is like having a big black spot in your vision, so you can only see pieces. It then gets worse over time.

He died before it got much worse, so obviously I do not know much about the progression.

Judi must be scared out of her mind though. :(

  5. Getting old sucks. I'm so sorry for her.

This means she can't see Daniel Craig when she is working with him. Truly a tragedy by itself.

  6. People with blue eyes are many times more likely to get macular degeneration. Looks like Judi has blue eyes. I do too, and my eye doctor said blue-eyed folks need to be very careful to wear sunglasses.

  11. There are two types. Wet and Dry. There is NO treatment for DRY macular degeneration. I repeat NONE. Only for WET. Access to health care has NOTHING to do with it. NONE. I know as my Mom has it and has already gone blind in one eye.

  13. Del, I think she needs both of us - one to describe his face in great detail, the other, his body. We could take turns with each. ;)

  14. LoL @Mooshki!

@Enty - Not buying the whole "I'm an ugly fat-ass" schpeel. I don't know why but I'm convinced you are a hot piece that is bff's with all the bad-ass ladies (Rashida Jones is a great example here) in Hollywood. Color me jealous either way.

  15. Totally forgot to comment on the post -

So sad to hear. I couldn't even image what this would be like. 'Wild Horses Can't Be Broken' was a favorite of mine growing up but it always made me scared sh%tless of losing my sight.

Sorry but this is absolutely false. My FIL has macular degeneration and has all the money in the world to "fix it". He's been able to slow its progress but his eyesight is almost totally gone. And it has been since he's was around 50 years old.

  18. ^^So do I! Love that show.

I'm shocked she's 77-I thought she was younger. She looks great. Hopefully they can arrest further development of the disease.
