Your Turn

Yesterday an interview with Mark Wahlberg was released where he said that if he had been on Flight 93 on September 11 that he would have personally stopped it and there would have been a lot of blood in the first class cabin when he was finished. Later, after being brutalized in the press by widows of people on that flight who said their husbands did stop the intended actions, Mark apologized. Until they said it, he was not going to apologize. Were his comments out of line? Disrespectful? Do you believe he could have taken on all the terrorists by himself?

  1. He is an arrogant entitled asshole who made a truly insensitive comment, but what's even sadder is in his own narcissistic mind he probably believes it.

  2. Other than the statement showing him to be the street thug we've always known him to be why did it take him 10 years to "mention" he'd been booked out of Boston that day!? BS!! He just wanted attention for his new film opening the other day. He's still a low life but with mega $$$ these days.

  3. Montana Marriott said it perfectly. I think most of us have tried to imagine what we would have done had we been on one of those planes, but the results would have been the same. What an asshole.

  4. I think this is a case of foot-in-mouth syndrome. I don't understand what he was trying to accomplish with his statement. He apologized, so lesson learned, I would hope.

  5. mark wahlberg puts his foot in his mouth all the time.

its not similiar, but i remember when he got mad at SNL when Andy Samberg did his impression of him. he said on like kimmel or something he was knock him out. or punch him. wahtever. and then he had to backpedal and say it was all in jest. even when he went on SNL to "make light" of it and show he wasn't really mad, you could tell he he truthfully was pretty annoyed by it all.

he says dumb things all the time. i think by now people should just take what he says with a grain of salt. he's just an ass that doens't think about what he ways before he says it.

  6. I have a broken heart because before this I was a big Mark fan but now I can't even look at his picture. What he said was so arrogant and so out of line that he needs to be on the receiving end of a lot of bad press because of it. I hope he feels the wrath from the public for making such an asinine statement.

  7. mark wahlberg is a street kid who knows how to fight and who has been to prison, etc.. if any other actor said it I would think it was ridiculous. however, I believe that he would have taken on the terrorists. would he know how to land a plane? no. they don't teach that in prison, last I checked.

I don't think he meant disrespect, I'm sure he believes what he said, ie that the plane would have landed.

I saw him on the street in the boston area a few months ago, and I have to say, while I wasn't a huge fan, he does have a certain something about him. energy. glow. some kind of charisma that I hadn't before seen in an actor.

he's also smart because he produces some movies and entourage etc. he's also religious, which also sets him apart from most of the rest of the pack. he could be a hot mess like sean penn, who had an easy life before stardom. but, he's got it together, he does alot of charity work, so I believe that he should be forgiven.

  8. Out of line? Yes.
    Disrespectful? Yes.
Marky Mark taking out terrorists? No.

Boastful and full of himself? Yes.
    Arrogant and insensitive? Yes.
    Bullshit? Yes.

  9. He is an Idiot. And yes, it was insensitive on his part. His jugular would have been cut within seconds.

  10. Arrogant S.O.B. Ignore until further notice. He may be a player where he lives but not where I live.

    ReplyDelete
  11. He is just like every other big mouthed nit wit with an even bigger attitude. The difference here is that when he speaks, a tabloid publishes it. I am sure like most of us he has his good and bad side. He appologized so ok. Probably would be a good idea to quietly donate to the widows and children fund set up.

  12. Aside from being a mediocre, over-rated actor (and horribly laughable "rapper"), he's an arrogant, insensitive prick and always has been. Remember, he is the punk who beat and BLINDED an innocent victim, beat up other people just for the hell of it, victimized others by being a street punk and vandalizing and stealing, not to mention throwing rocks at and yelling racial slurs at African Americans. I don't buy his bullshit for one second, and avoid most films he is in. He's the same character in everything, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think it's easy to look back at something and say what you would have done - but it's entirely different thing being there and actually doing it. He just simply spoke without thinking. He didn't say "Hey I bet if I say this, I can offend a whole lot of people!" It's just one of those things you say without thinking, then later realize how terribly offensive it was. Not everyone scrutinizes every single thing they say before they say it and judge whether or not someone will be offended.
It was just stupidity on his part. No reason to get so damn upset.

    ReplyDelete
  14. He said ages ago that he was booked on that flight, so that's not new news.
Sometimes people just open their mouths when they should keep them shut. I'm sure many men have said the same thing, but because they weren't famous it didn't cause such a stink.

It was still a stupid thing to say though.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We can all "fantasize" about what we would have done after the fact but while there, under extreme pressure, no one can really say for certain they would have been everyone's saviour. It's purely a dream or maybe a wish they could have kicked some ass and saved some lives but came across as disrepectful and arrogant.

No Marky, no you wouldn't have.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Totally disrespectful

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't really have an opinion of him either way, but I remember that right after 9/11, he did mention that he was supposed to be on the plane but didn't really want to talk about it out of restpect for the families whose loved ones were on the plane.

I remember respecting him somewhat after that. Too bad he couldn't keep his stupid mouth shut.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It was a stupid thing to say but I don't really expect much from Marky Mark so I can't get upset about it. Even though I love celebrity gossip we should really ignore most of what they say. With the exception of a few, celebrities are not geniuses or philosophers.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Am I the only one that doesn't see this as being bad?!

I think what he was trying to say was that if he was on the flight-he would've beaten the guys up.
I think that's what most men were saying when this happened.
A lot of my male friends made the same comment.

I don't think he was saying the men and women who did fight back didn't do anything, I think he was saying what most people say when they think of 9/11.

    Maybe I'm wrong??

    ReplyDelete
  20. He's like 5'8", isn't he? *picturing a terrorist putting hand on MarkyMark's forehead; MarkyMark at arm's length, swinging arms, hitting nothing*

    ReplyDelete
  21. If I were the widow I would take offense....it's like saying the people on that plane didn't do enough.

these poor people are trying to move on with their lives, so yeah, he's a douche.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maybe he kept his fake junk from Boogie Nights and figured he could beat the terrorists down with it. Dirk Diggler to the rescue!

Yeah, he's an arrogant prick (pun intended) with a big mouth and totally out of line.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Look, especially with the first 2 flights, people on the plane didn't know what the terrorists planned; who crashes a plane and kills themselves too? Everyone was expecting a real landing. The airlines' policy had long been to let hijackers do what they want, because hijackers want to escape with their lives. This was unprecedented. I'm sure there were many men on those planes who physically could have taken those guys out, and didn't because they were expecting something different than what happened. And it's great posturing to say you *would have*--but seriously, no, Mark, you would've gone along with everyone else because no one thought the planes would be crashing into buildings. The reason that flight 93 got taken down by the passengers (because I'm not a conspiracy theorist) is that it took off late, so the other flights had already crashed, and the passengers had spoken on the phones with their families, and their families let them know there was no way they were getting out of that alive. With that knowledge, they had nothing to lose and decided to make it so even more people on the ground didn't lose their lives too. But when you're thinking, they'll land us somewhere and negotiate (and the pilots are ALREADY DEAD, btw), no, you sit in your seat and wait. It's unfortunate, it's ugly, and it's human. "Blood in first class." Whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes Hannah - your friends who said the same thing were stupid then, too. No offense.
It is completely out of line to suggest that the people who died on that flight were somehow culpable in their own deaths by not behaving the way an action star thinks HE would behave. In reality, I bet he'd be wetting his pants like everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  25. *LOL @ chopchop*.

I don't think he meant any harm with his comment, but it was an unbelievably dumb, arrogant and insensitive thing to say.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with Hannahpalindrome:

I'm a NY'er that witnessed the planes going into the towers and I was not offended by what he said.

He mentioned years ago that he was booked on the flight and that he has had over 50 dreams about that day and how he would have handled things or what could have happened to him.
A lot of people had said that they would have tried to do something too. And who knows, maybe he would have succeeded in taking them down, you never know.

I did not lose any respect for him at all because of this, I don't think he meant to disrespect the families of 9/11.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Have to pipe in here. I can't be the only one tired of the media grabbing ahold of something a celeb says and running with it for all its worth.

I get that a celeb should be careful about what they say. However, they ARE only human!

    Give it a break!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't think this is worthy of talking about...anyone who knows what happened on those flights, wishes they could be there to stop it. He just didn't word it properly.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ..and that has nothing to do with him wanting to sleep with me when we were 19 :) I know he's an arrogrant asshole now, but I don't think his intentions were to be disrespectful.

    ReplyDelete
  30. He's an arrogant creep. I'm kind of surprised 0 is the only person who's brought up his violent past.

    ReplyDelete
  31. When I heard about this the other day my first thought was that it must have been said in conversation about the Bourne movies.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ummmm, no. He's an ass.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Sunnyhorse

But he went to jail and paid society back for his crimes. That's why I don't mention it. You gotta give people second chances.

    ReplyDelete
  34. To be clear, I think he's an ass because he's cocky enough to tink he can play Drake in the Uncharted film(s) when Nathan Fillion (sp) would be perfect for that part and should have got it!! *stepping offthe box*

I really couldn't crae less about this interview and wha he said. We can all say what we would've done but. . . *shrugs*

    ReplyDelete
  35. He served 45 days of a ten year sentence, and there was no restitution to any of the numerous people he had victimized. Sorry, but I hardly think that he paid society back. If anything, the asshole got away with it and is now a millionaire living the high life.

If it was Lohan who had done that and gotten off with such a light sentence, most people would be haranguing her ass (and rightfully so).

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think I've heard about 100 people say this very same thing. I think it's something felt by lots of people. Maybe he should have self-censored himself because he's famous? I don't know. I've heard it before, mostly by people I know in NY, people who are pissed off major about the whole incident and people who have lost friends and relatives.

When this kind of thing happens I tend to look at just who is "demanding" an apology or who is so offended. Often I find the answer there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. He still went to jail, non? And has he done anything like that since?

And when has Lohan served 45 days in jail?

I think Mr. Wahlberg is white Irish trash from south Boston and always will be - despite how much he's worth now.

LOVE that he's so into family now, after bragging for years about all the women he's had. Hollywood Hypocrite, like a lot of them !

    ReplyDelete
  39. This ticked me off when I read about it but in mulling it over & reading the comments, I really don't think he meant any disrespect. Definitely spoke before thinking. The subject matter still bothers a lot of people & I guess Marky Mark is no different.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think he meant to be disrespectful, and I don't think he was disrespectful at all. Marky Mark has been known to say alot of stupid things in the past and while this may qualify as stupid, I don't think he meant to hurt anyone's tender feelings. Everyone (and I do mean everyone) imagines what they would have done in the same situation and not one of them/me will admit they probably would have been quietly sitting in there seat hoping for the best.

And maybe I am missing something, but he didn't say he would have single handedly be the hero of the day. He just basically said he would be a part of the fight, which I can totally believe.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hate it when people make arrogant comments like this.''I dare a terrorist to try and hijack MY plane! Or ''I feel sorry for the person who tries to mug/burglarize/rape me! That asshole doesn't know who's he's dealing with!'' It displays a total lack of empathy and an unbearable amount of narcissism.

Marky Mark has never really struck me as the nicest guy, though, so this story mostly made me roll my eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't know, Sue Ellen. He flipped out a year or so ago over an SNL skit and threatened to "break Samberg's big fuckin' Jew nose" or something very close to that effect. He really is just a punk IMO, as it's always punks that resort to violence.

Wahlberg just gives me the creeps, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I get the impression that many of these actors who play action "heroes" tend to think that they are bad-asses themselves. Didn't Steven Segal (I know, I know) really think he was some sort of kick-ass ninja or something?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I just came back from a trip to Boston and our cab driver told us what an assh*le he is whenever he is home -- and his his brothers(s). A sense of entitlement was the general sentiment.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I personally think he's a typical actor in hollywood. arrogant and thinks they're indestructable and completely deluded. It's the public, the fame, the media and the money that make them this way. They may start out nice and sweet...but they all change and become aholes. Wahlberg is no hero, except in the pretend world of movies. The people on flight 93 are heroes. Who is he to judge the men and women on that flight? The people on that flight are heroes. They crashed into a field in PA, saving the White House from getting hit...or the Pentagon from getting 2 hits. That's where the plane was heading to. They knew they were going to die no matter what...so they sacraficed themselves and saved thousands of lives. Brilliant people for stopping the terrorists. Mark Wahlberg needs to read up on his facts before spewing BS.

  47. He wasn't supposed to be on Flight 93 - he was booked on one of the Boston flights that hit the WTC --- it seems as if the Flight 93 widows are the ones responding - we all would like to think we'd have done something if we were in that situation, Wahlberg mentioned it out loud; he shouldn't have apologized.

    ReplyDelete
  48. A lot of people think they could just rush an armed terrorist or gunman and save the day - you hear people stating it all the time after a mass shooting ("Well, I would've done such and such"), but the truth is, people HAVE tried to save the day in these instances, and most of them are dead.

Also, we humans have a strong instinct for survival. Most of us would seek cover and lay low without even thinking about it. That's just the way it is. It's one thing to be a action movie "hero" and quite another entirely to be caught in a deadly crossfire of real bullets.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I didn't get the impression that he was saying that the people on the plane didn't do enough...

And my friends are not stupid.
Just something most people said in NY after 9/11 out of anger.
The same reason a friend of mine joined the military after 9/11.

I work down by Wall Street, and a lot of guys were saying the same thing. I just thought it was macho bs stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  50. just some bs bravado...i dont think he meant to be disrespectful, just remind us of his manly manliness.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sadly, had Marky Mark tried to do something, there would have been "blood in the first class cabin." His. The terrorists were on a mission that day and they'd have killed Mr. Wahlberg as an example to keep the others in line.

That said, people always have inflated views of what they "would have done" in some horrific situation. The difference is that when John-at-the-corner-bar says it, the media don't pick and repeat it. When Mark Wahlberg says it, it makes news.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm with you 0 - 45 days out of 10 yrs, no restitution/compensation for the victims and recent bad behaviour indicates someone who has not learnt from their mistakes and in this case is a known arsehole.

Also, from the perspective of someone not on the same continent who cannot possibly have the same emotional ties to 9/11, anyone who makes a comment like that is incredibly narcissistic and insensitive I don't care whether he "meant" to hurt the victims families - he did hurt them.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I guess that the comment about white Irish trash bothered me more than what Marky Mark said about 9/11

  58. I've always loved MW. Marky Mark was my crush when I was like 13 but I can't defend this. I understand what he is getting at, but what he said just isn't appropriate to say out loud. It's something you need to keep to your self. He has talked before about how he and however many kids he had at the time were booked on the flight in first class. I absolutely think given his upbringing and love for his he would have tried something, but he has no idea if he would have been even able to overpower one of the terrorists and he only knows now, tha they were going to be flown into buildings. He wouldn't have known that if he was on the plane.

    ReplyDelete
  59. This idiot must have been watching "Air Force One" a bunch of times right before he gave that interview. Who the fuck says some insane shit like that? Weren't three planes hijacked on the morning of 9/11? How could he have prevented the other two planes from crashing? Yeah, answer that Marky Mark. Didn't the terrorists have bombs strapped to their chests and said if anybody made a move they would have been ignited, blowing the plane up in mid-flight. Maybe Mark believes he has some "Carrie" like Jedi mind trick abilities that when used would have made the hijackers give up and surrender. Yeah, that must be what he meant.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't think he meant any offense, but I can see how the 9/11 widows were offended. I'm thoroughly sick of the whole "he said one thing and now I have zero respect for him and I hate him." Seriously, no one stands a chance if it takes one foot-in-mouth moment--for which he apologized--to completely write someone off. If that were real life, we would all be considered despicable. I'm not defending what he said, but I don't think this makes him a shitty person. Same as when Johnny Depp made that idiotic comment of paps/rape as well as Kristen Stewart. Perspective, folks. Try it.

Debutante--So you really think there's no such thing as growing up? Being a playboy in your 20s, sleeping around, and then in your 30s wanting to settle down and have kids makes him a hypocrite? Jesus.

  61. 4 planes were hijacked Jason.
    2 hit WTC
    1 hit the Pentagon
1 DID NOT hit the White House because the passengers on that plane were more of a man (females included) than Mr. Good Vibrations would ever be in such a situation.

    He should just stop talking.

  65. I hadn't even known that he'd said anything until the apology came out...yes, he can be a jackass, and yes, he shouldn't have said it, but I tend to doubt he meant any disrespect to anyone. Besides, hindsight is always 20/20, and, as has been pointed out by lots of others here, no one on those first 2 planes knew what the deal really was; if they had, I daresay they might have tried to fight back, although in all likelihood the planes still would have crashed somewhere.

On a more humorous note (black-humored, maybe...), the idea of the Funky Bunch stopping terrorism in its tracks does give me a chuckle, and reminds me of the joke going around Boston at the time that, if the U.S. Government was serious about getting Bin Laden, they'd send the Durgin Park waitresses after him. ;-) (The ladies of this fine, old-school Yankee establishment are legendary for Not Taking Shit From Anyone, although these days they're more sassy than bitchy; still, though, had I been Bin Laden hanging out at Tora Bora and seen those gals coming up the mountainside, I wouldn't know whether to shit, die, or go crazy...oh, and Himmmm, should you ever decide to visit Boston, I'll take you to Durgin Park sometime for prime rib & indian pudding, OK? :-)
