Kristen Wiig Says No Bridesmaids Sequel
Proving that she is the Michael Cera of the movies, Kristen Wiig says that she has no plans to do any Bridesmaids sequels and it will not happen. Considering that Melissa McCarthy was hopeful as recently as this weekend at the Golden Globes, I think it is too bad. I am not the biggest fan of sequels in the world, but I think there was and is a lot more these characters can do and explore. There were so many characters and a lot of stories to be told. It is kind of a shame. At the same time, I will say that it shows Kristen is not in it just for a paycheck because I am sure the paycheck would be enough to feed the population of small countries. Oh, or to make sure Lindsay has enough coke and Chanel to last a few weeks.
I don't think Melissa McCarthy has to worry--she's going to have PLENTY of work now. <3 her!!
ReplyDeleteI heard there was some sort of disagreement between Wiig and the studio. Like her bonus for the movie was $100,000 and that pissed her off.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of sequels. They rarely live up to the magic of the first film. I still have to see this.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the Michael Cera reference?
ReplyDeleteI respect her for keeping the movie pure. She and her writing partner are writing partner are already working on a new script and new ideas. It is great she is focusing on that and not going for the easy paycheck *cough* Hangover II *cough*
ReplyDelete@firbug Michael Cera was the lone holdout for making an Arrested Development movie, the rest of the cast wanted to do it years ago. He finally agreed to do it when his movie career fell flat or the check was high enough.
ReplyDeleteApplaud her big time for this. Too many movies do sequels to death and ruin everything.
ReplyDeleteI'm Team Wiig on this. The studio fucked her, and now they are trying to act like they didn't. McCarthy's career is exploding right now. Let the Bridesmaids legacy stand as it is and not have the sequel stink all over it (see: The Hangover II).
ReplyDeleteI would have agreed with you Enty until I saw The Hangover 2, what a waste of time, money and talent that was
ReplyDeleteThanks TimeBob :)
ReplyDeleteI loved how the characters in this movie meshed, so a sequel would be fun, but not if they mess it up.
ReplyDeleteMelissa McCarthy was the only good thing about this movie. Two good scenes and the rest was hype.
ReplyDeleteI respect her stance on this. However, more folks need to give Jon Hamm comedy roles. He was so funny in this and on 30 Rock. If anyone on this site has that power, please do so. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm of a mixed mind -- it almost seems she's shooting herself. I understand she wants to be pure and admirable. But these are her characters. Why not agree to a sequel but only if her upfront compensation more than covers the first screw-you she received and is also overinflated for the sequel assuming a second screw-you? If that's not met, then step away.
ReplyDeleteMelissa McCarthy better receive a nomination for best supporting Actress. She was hilarious. I watched the movie again just for her.
ReplyDeleteKristen, take the money and run, sister.
nolachickee - I SO agree with you! Jon Hamm is VERY funny, I loved him when he hosted SNL, too! He's got a new film coming out called Friends with Kids (or something like that) which is a dramedy.
ReplyDeleteThe studios actually offered her 10mill to write/reprise her role in Bridesmaids 2. She turned them down because she didnt want to just write another movie for the money.
ReplyDeleteIf she saw nothing to add and felt the sequel would have been shit, then I respect her for her decision.
If more people did this we'd have less Hangover 2,3, etc. Less Fast and Furious movies and less American Pie movies. Seriously, can I get back the 1 hr and 45 minutes of my life I spent watching Fast and Furious 3?!?!
I agree with most everyone here that there is no reason to do a sequel just to do it. Someones one really is good enough.
ReplyDeleteLittle Miss Smoke and Mirrors - thanks for the heads up! Did you see the 30 Rock where all of Liz's exes were in a scene playing Jamaican nurses, including Jon? I've seen it more than once and it still makes me laugh until tears come out.
ReplyDelete@Jazziegirl- agrees. Melissa McCarthy was definitely the highlight for me.
ReplyDeleteChris O'Dowd is awesome too...I heart him hard, especially in the IT Crowd:)
Jonny Depp should have chosen to do this with all those Pirate movies: just say no.
ReplyDelete(And I'll join the Love McCarthy train. Cannot believe this is the same woman that was the sweet chef on Gilmore Girls)
Agree, Susan. And Black Cat, EXACTLY. They should have left The Hangover alone. The second one was painful.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like Wiig for this. Also, she's apparently already working on another movie she's writing/wrote with the same person who helped write Bridesmaids. Excited to see what she comes up with next.
Also, an idea could be a spin off with just the McCarthy character? I enjoyed Knocked-Up, and understsood that Apatow was going to do a spin off with Paul Rudd's character and his family (I'm sorry I forget her name...Apatow's wife...Leslie something) - anyone know if that's happening?
ReplyDeleteBridesmaids only had one joke in it anyway.. a sequel would be even more dreadful.
ReplyDeleteI really didn't like it all.
Kristen Wiig is a talented lady, I'm sure she'll come up with something new that will be great.
ReplyDeleteBut, she ain't no Melissa McCarthy!
Whatever the case, I hope Kristen is doing the right thing for her career. I'd be so sad if she disappears. She's incredibly funny!
ReplyDeleteSequels to comedies nearly always suck a big one. Kristin is wise.
ReplyDeleteI'm probably alone in my love for The Target Lady. I'd watch two hours of her annoying the shit of of people in a checkout line.
Kristen is smart enough to know that sequel suck ass and she don't want to have any of the shine knocked off her movie. She's right to say no.
ReplyDelete*doesn't
ReplyDeletesorry but Bridesmaids wasn't as good as EVERYONE seems to be screaming. It was too long, several scenes could have been axed and I don't need to see another 90mins thanks.
ReplyDeletethe ass kiss for this movie is embarrassing to really funny women who don't have to resort to shit jokes to make people laugh IMO.
Hangover 2 was fkn terrible.
yes, I stopped watching hangover 2 near the beginning because it spoiled the original hangover for me. I had heard it was bad but I didn't quite believe it until I started watching.
ReplyDeleteso, though I think that Kristin would do a better sequel than the hangover guys did, its nice to see that she has the scruples not to do something just for the money. yah girl power. that movie has done about 288 million worldwide apparently.
and what did norm macdonald say about women not being funny? norm who?
I don't like actors who think they are above sequels. Seems a bit snotty to me.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that I think they could do more with the characters, I think it's best if they just leave this one alone. I'm totally up for another female written/ all female cast comedy, though. Do it, smart Hollywood ladies!
ReplyDeleteI also think they should do a spinoff with Melissa McCarthy's character. Except tone down the bodily function humor. She was the only part of the movie I really enjoyed.
ReplyDelete@Ida, you're not the only one, I still love the Target lady!
ReplyDeleteKrissie, I think it's another thing if the actor is the one who has to write it as well.
ReplyDeleteI tried to watch this movie and it wasn't very funny so I shut it off after like 5 or 6 minutes. I'm impatient. However I don't see how Kristen could be shooting herself in the foot as they say. She wrote Bridesmaids with her partner, and everyone that thinks it's worthy of a sequel should understand they have the talent to write another movie. KW is also a very funny woman, she has a lot of characters in her.
