A Great Hollywood Tell All Book
Most of the time when you get excerpts from these old Hollywood tell all books they are in The Enquirer or Star. This particular tell all book though is excerpted in The New York Times. Kind of gives a sense of authenticity doesn't it? The book is called Full Service and is about a US Marine from World War 2 who became an escort and a pimp and how he slept with or hooked up celebrities with every kind of sex imaginable. Scotty Bowers says he hooked up Katharine Hepburn with 150 different women, while he slept with Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant. He also slept with women including Edith Piaf and Vivien Leigh. The release of the book is also time to go with Madonna's movie about the Duke Of Windsor and Wallis Simpson. Scotty used to have threesomes with both of them.
Funny how all of the people he serviced/slept with are now deceased.
ReplyDelete*sideeye*
i wouldn't exactly consider the nyt a bastion of credibility anymore, but if we're comparing to the other ny dailies...well, bastion of credibility it is.
ReplyDeletei would so totally read this book, in spite of my side-eye at the timing of the release. had never heard of this guy...the dirt on desi and hepburn sound like it might bring about lawsuits from their estates.
Ida: He actually said thats one of the reasons he's doing it now, besides the fact he is in his 80's and time is running out, he said that all his tricks were now dead and telling the story wouldn't hurt them. Of course it also means they can't deny, but whatever.
ReplyDeleteWait! Hold the phone! Desi Arnez WHAT?!?! Is this common knowledge and am I just really behind the times?? o_0
ReplyDelete^That's what I was thinking too!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd read this.
Whoa. I'm so checking this book out at the library asap.
ReplyDeleteIt's 9.99 for Kindle on Amazon - with 2 4 star and 3 1 star ratings (1 star for talking about people who can't defend themselves because they're dead). I just can't resist stuff like this - downloading it now.
ReplyDeleteSusan, damn I wish I had a Kindle!!! I do, uh, have one on my wish list. :P
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, though. I love old Hollywood gossip. People just need lighten the hell up.
Read and report back. :D
Vicki - get a kindle!!! I love mine so much I got a 2nd one! I even talked my siblings into getting them. I have a couple of good links for free and heavily discounted books for kindle if you get one - just let me know.
ReplyDeleteDESI ARNAZ WAS GAY??!!!????
ReplyDelete@Eleanor, I had the same reaction--how have I, gossip hound, never heard this??!!
Okay, I am so going to buy this.
At 80+, why would he even lie? I'd be inclined to believe it.
Wow, glad that I am not the only one who was blindsided by that revelation.
ReplyDeleteNow that my shock is wearing off, I realized something. There is lots of talk of Lucy being a "working girl". This man is also a prostitute/matchmaker. Desi might be gay... unhappy marriage.
Mind... blown... O_O
Hmm, actually, the NYT article (on Page 2) states that Desi was heterosexual, and Bowers hooked him up with women.
ReplyDelete@MM, it does say that in the article. What gives, enty???
ReplyDeleteThank you MM, I was just hopping in here to point that out. Desi was straight and Lucy considered this guy his 'pimp', even though he says he never charged Desi when he hooked him up with different women.
ReplyDeleteDesi Arnaz was so beautiful. I still have a huge crush on Ricky Ricardo.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't say Desi was gay. He said he found GIRLS for Desi, by the score and that Lucille Ball hated his guts.
ReplyDeleteI bet there are a lot of estate attorneys sharpening their pens!
ReplyDeleteWhile I will read this as soon as I can...the bit about it being OK because "they're all dead now" certainly doesn't preclude it harming the deceased peoples' FAMILIES, old dude.
ReplyDeleteNeed to read this ....
ReplyDeleteSusanB please link us to that site!
ReplyDeleteI am such a kindle noob.. and I so wanna read this!
True or not, I am sure it will be quite dishy ;)
okay, phew, I am oddly relieved that Desi was not in fact gay. I have to believe that SOME stars, past and present, play for our team :-D
ReplyDeleteHow do you prove any of this happened? It reminds me of that Million Little Pieces book Oprah loved so much until she found out it was all made up.
ReplyDeleteI'm buying his story. He looks like a strapping, hot dude in the cover photo. Appealed to the men and the ladies.
ReplyDeleteThanks to those with the correction about Desi. No way was that guy gay.
I know it is pretty common knowledge but I just don't want to read about Cary Grant being gay or bi. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just pretty much crushes my young girl dreams.
ReplyDelete@TT--
ReplyDeleteLOVE your avatar! That looks like one pissed-off kitty there...
You might want to go to David Patrick Columbia's New York Social Diary website and read about his meetings with Scotty in LA in the 1970/80s.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo getting this book right now!! Juicy!!!
ReplyDelete"Scotty says that he was paid to be a matchmaker for gay clients like Desi Arnaz."
ReplyDeleteWhy the wording if Desi isn't gay??
@joElla - this book isn't one of the discounted ones. I check these 2 sites daily since they show new free and/or discounted books (some of which are only free for one day):
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ereaderiq.com/
http://dailycheapreads.com/
If you check the discussion boards on Amazon under Kindle/Books you'll see a thread dedicated to temporary or permanent discounts:
http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle/ref=cm_cd_t_rvt_np?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdPage=281&cdThread=Tx1LK8SYLEDT8B5#CustomerDiscussionsNew
It seems like some book's prices go up and down almost daily.
Anyone know if Jose Ferrer's name comes up in the book? He was just big a playa as Arnaz was.
ReplyDelete". . .gay clients like Desi"? No effn way. Barbara Eden said Desi hit on her and we know the Jeanie doesn't lie. From all accounts, Desi was a big womanizer, which was a big factor in Lucy finally ending the marriage. I will always believe they loved each other until they died, but the cheating just did them in. Ya, I loved Lucy (and Desi too)!
ReplyDeleteAll the rest of them I can believe.
@Vickie- you can add a kindle app to your phone or laptop...thats what I did:) I refuse to buy a kindle because I <3 books so much, but sometimes I'll buy/rent textbooks for super cheap with kindle, so I have it on my laptop and iphone.
ReplyDeleteDesi wasn't gay but that shady Darwin Porter book says that he used to get serviced by Cesar Romero, which may or may not be true. The Duke of Windsor was known to have a teeny peeny and swung any way he could. I'm getting this for my kindle. LOVE my kindle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links SusanB!
Thanks for the link Daveb. That was a good article. Scotty seems like a decent guy. I love stories like this. In that article he said:
ReplyDelete“Sex is the one thing in life that makes people happy,” he replied. “What could be so bad about that?”
I have to agree.
Desi Arnaz was gay????? (turns of computer & leaves the room.)
ReplyDelete...Oh, and thanks, SusanB for the Kindle lilnks! Much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteNope. I do not need to know. My God, it was bad enough when I caught "Pandora Reynolds and the Flying Dutchman" the other night, and all I could think of was what I had read a week prior in Furious Love, when ET dished on some insider gossip on my beloved Ava Gardner.
ReplyDeleteI'm good. I don't need to know how, who or what anyone's doing in the boudoir (as long as it's all consenting adults of course).
Desi wasn't gay! Enty - you need to change the wording of that last sentence.
ReplyDeleteNever heard about Desi being gay.
ReplyDeleteBut there are a ton of stories about his drinking, gambling and womanizing. A few times cars would slow past his house and dump him out on the lawn and Lucy would clean him up. The stories of why they got divorced was because the children were getting older and Lucy was afraid of them hearing rumors and such. But even though Lucy and Desi married others they apparently still loved one another and would meet and have play dates with their grandchildren.
Kindle is well worth the money. I used the Kindle Android app before I broke down and bought a Kindle Fire.
ReplyDeleteAmazon has loads of classic reads for free and a ton of books under $5.
I used the same links as SusanB. ;)
No way to Desi. He actually met Lucy when he hired her for sex. He ended up requesting her a lot because he liked her. Eventually he told her he'd get her out of hooking, aaaaand you all know the rest of the story.
ReplyDeleteI hate books like this. No way of knowing which he's telling the truth about, which he's lying about. Will not read.
ReplyDeleteVicky I think you have your facts wrong. I believe Lucille Ball left home at 14-15 and there has been speculation about how she supported herself as a showgirl before arriving in Hollywood 7-8 years later. However I doubt she met Desi in the manner you suggest since she had been starring in films, admittedly mostly B pictures, since 1933 and only met Desi Arnez in 1940.
ReplyDeleteDesi Arnez is NOT gay!
ReplyDelete(sorry, just killing a bit of a schoolgirl crush there.)
I admit it. I'd SO read this.
LOVE my Kindle. Talk about instant gratification! There's nothing like reading a review about a book, deciding you want it, and having it in your hands 30 seconds later.
ReplyDeleteA great place to get Kindle covers and accessories is Crazy on Digital. I think my case and screen protector were under $15.00 with shipping. I got my iPad cover from them, too.
http://www.crazyondigital.com
@JoElla - you can also search for free Kindle books at Amazon but their website is weird. I've searched under "Kindle free books" and found stuff that doesn't come up under "free Kindle books".
Scotty Bowers looks like a hunk in any time period.
ReplyDeleteRumors have circulated about the folks I see on the cover forever. This could clear up a few of those old Hollywood blinds.
You can read kindle books on your computer using the "cloud" I too am a kindle addict. I have a fire at home and read books on my smart phone. I love that my books are always with me.
ReplyDeleteI refuse to believe that every man, except for Jeremy Piven and Gerard Butler, are gay in Hollywood. I refuse. Now they're killing me with the classics. Desi is now gay too???? This is getting a lot ridiculous. Now Katherine is gay, along with Spencer Tracy. I don't believe it for a minute. Sounds like someone's trying to cash in on the big bucks, cause there's no one left alive to discount any of his accusations.
ReplyDeleteDaveb- I totally get the timeline, but my undstanding was that many young actresses were high end hookers for both the extra cash and trying to land jobs. Not much different that things these days.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could remember where I read it, but I'm pretty sure it was a B.I. from years ago.
I would very much like to read this book.
ReplyDeleteBasically the gist of all this is, most human beings, given the money, time and limited to zero consequences , would totally f*ck other human beings, regardless of race, gender or religious preference. I like to whitewash it as human beings wanting to be as close to each other as they can possibly get, and I can't find any fault with that.
I second ereaderiq.com. I get their newsletter daily and have added new authors to my must buy list. Also, if you go to a department, like say, romance - historical,(swoon) or fiction, fantasy, (TWINKLING VAMPIRES!) you can sort by cost low to high and the 0.00$ books will come to the top. Sometimes you have to sort through old (really old) and foreign books. Another great source is gutenberg.org. You can download books in kindle and epub format and use an extension in firefox or IE to read them in your browser. Totally rocks. And totally legal.
ReplyDeleteI'd read it. And take it with a grain of salt like almost anything else on the web.
ReplyDeleteHere's a list of free Kindle ebooks. They do change all the time.

Vivien Leigh was very out of touch with reality. I believe she moved a boyfriend into the home she shared with Laurence Olivier and didn't see anything wrong with that. I am not quite sure how much of this book is 100% fact, but it will make interesting beach reading.
ReplyDeleteI thought Vivian Leigh had a bunch of mental problems.
ReplyDeleteWasn't she manic depressive or schizophrenic or something?
@Vicki, I believe she was bipolar.
ReplyDeleteI read it. It's awful. So much so that I got a refund.
ReplyDeleteIt was all about his being sexually abused as a child and turning it into a decades-long tricking career.
I'm not a prude, but this guy came off as smarmy and very selfish.
Deleted.
