Cynthia Nixon Changes Her Mind About Being Gay By Choice - Kind Of
Apparently having the entire LGBT community come down on you over your words was too much for Cynthia Nixon to bear so she changed her mind about being gay by choice and now says she is in a relationship with a woman by choice because she could be with a man by choice because she is bisexual which is not a choice. Actually, she said some other things to the Advocate too, but I don't really understand what she was doing except trying to keep her remarks intact while not making others angry at her and most of it now seems like a big convoluted vocabulary mess. It also seems like she is still saying that some people do have a choice if they are gay or straight. Let the woman speak her mind.
"My recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay. I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can't and shouldn't be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering. However, to the extent that anyone wishes to interpret my words in a strictly legal context I would like to clarify:
"While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual. I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship.
"As I said in the Times and will say again here, I do, however, believe that most members of our community — as well as the majority of heterosexuals — cannot and do not choose the gender of the persons with whom they seek to have intimate relationships because, unlike me, they are only attracted to one sex.
"Our community is not a monolith, thank goodness, any more than America itself is. I look forward to and will continue to work toward the day when America recognizes all of us as full and equal citizens."
Just shut-up.
ReplyDeleteYeah, she said enough already.
ReplyDeleteWho. Cares.
ReplyDeleteOMG...who cares. Why do people care so much about 1 person's opininon. She believes what she believes and that's ok. She's not causing harm to anyone. If she thinks she's gay by choice, then let her be gay by choice. It's her opininon and she's entitled.
ReplyDeleteI could power up a generator with all that back peddling
ReplyDeleteI don't think she should have had to do this. It's too bad that there seems to be so much pressure even within the gay community as to how you "should" define yourself.
ReplyDeleteI assumed this is what she meant the first time. I don't think she meant any harm.
ReplyDeleteShe shouldn't have to change her views to satisfy anyone. It's a form of bullying, IMO. She's entitled to her opinion and has the right to express it.
ReplyDeleteI'm growing to dislike everyone who feels that anyone should live by definitions they've set. Fuck them and the broke-down horse they ride.
Actually, I think this is well-worded.
ReplyDeleteShe shouldn't have to say it, no, but so many people chose to be willfully obtuse that I can see how she felt forced in to a corner and had to clarify in minute detail.
I agree with crila, layna, and figgy.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with Sue Ellen!
ReplyDeleteI tell you...the gay media is starting to seem like big ol' bullies to me these days. Not cool.
ReplyDeleteAgree, Maja. She shouldn't have to keep explaining herself.
ReplyDelete"Our community is not a monolith, thank goodness, any more than America itself is."
^^ But that is an excellent point.
Back in line, sheep.
ReplyDeleteOh for the love of God! Shut the fuck up, Cynthia. What happened? Did the gay mafia threaten her after her last outburst?
ReplyDelete@Maja @Layna & @figgy - I agree with all your posts.
ReplyDelete^^and @crila
ReplyDeleteWell this does make more sense. And for everyone who thinks she's being bullied do any of you fancy same sex loving, crave it and in fact it's your orientation but you just happen to be straight by choice?
