I think Carnival Cruise Lines should have waited for awhile before making the announcement they did to the passengers aboard their Costa Concordia cruise. The people almost died and some of their fellow passengers did die and now it looks like all Carnival cares about is money and being greedy.
They make it seem like it is a big deal that they are going to refund the cost of the trip to everyone who sailed on the ill fated voyage. Of course you should. Don't make it seem like you are being f**king magnanimous (like that word?) about it. That is the least you can do.
Oh, and for every cruise you take on the line from now on they will give you a 30% discount. Whoo hoo. There is no truth to the rumor that you will also get a card which allows you to get off the chip before the captain and the crew in case of an emergency. The bodies have not even been all removed from the wreckage of the ship and they want the survivors to start booking new trips at 30% discount? I think what will happen is passengers are going to sue the line out of existence so they really want to kind of try to put everyone in a not litigious mood. Did you see the scenes in those photographs of passengers waiting to get on a life boat? I think they could be a little more generous.
That is absolutely outrageous! I hope they sue the shit out of Carnival!
ReplyDeleteI went on a Carnival cruise once and loved it, wanting to go again someday, but I will not use them after this fiasco.
So wrong. Not only should they pay the customers back, they should comp them a make-up cruise as well. They could have died, to say their vacations were ruined is an understatement. 30% off? I'd feel insulted.
ReplyDeleteFree cruises for life. I know, I got that from Lost where late in the series the survivors had free plane passes for life. But come on, not only is it appropriate, and affordable compared to being sued out of existence, it would be free advertising if these passengers actually put their trust back in the cruiseline.
ReplyDeleteDid the ship sink in international waters or in Italian waters? If it was international, the passengers will have a hard time suing. If it was in Italy, I'd assume they could sue in Italian courts?
ReplyDeleteAgree with Amy. Offering 30% is almost as if they're toying with the victims to see what they'll do.
ReplyDeleteI've seen stories on the news that the paperwork the passengers sign limits the cruise line to just 75 thousand dollars in case of any damages, including loss of possessions, or injury or death. Evidently it'll be very difficult to sue. I'm hoping there will be a way to have this contract set aside. Cruise lines have to be responsible.
ReplyDeleteTold'ja. Cruise passengers sign liability waivers. In the US, liability waivers don't extend to intentional conduct but who knows what goes in Italy. And international waters start 3 miles offshore. That doesn't look like international waters to me. Which was probably for the best, ATK.
ReplyDeleteLike any of those survivors (are we using that term for them now?) are going to get on a cruise ship any time soon! I'd never get on one and I only witnessed the even through the magic of internet.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I can ever go on a cruise. Not only are there the illnesses and the mysterious disappearances and pirates, but now there's this. Also, I get very seasick on even the largest smoothest boats (I once spent a "friends and family cruise" on a Navy guided missile cruiser breathing deep through my nose and staying close to the rail just in case). I think the idea of a cruise sounds like great fun, but I want it on dry land.
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking gall.
ReplyDeleteWow. This company has some nerve.
ReplyDeleteUgh....the next thing you know Carnival will be sending them coupons for free bottled water.
ReplyDeleteReal compensation should be in the form of letting all of them use the Ships Captain as a teather ball.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that none of the people are going on a cruise ever again. They have to be traumatized by this. 30% off..seriously? How about everyone who was on the ship sue your @ss and get millions of dollars instead and put your company out of business for good.
ReplyDelete...and BTW...went on a Carnival cruise. HATED IT!!! Have been on a total of 8 cruises. Carnival was by far the worst. Food was disgusting and cheap too. Best cruise Royal Carribean.
ReplyDeleteWow, their PR team should be fired ASAP.
ReplyDeleteThere's been so much bad publicity about this fiasco, you have to think Carnival is going to be losing money for a long time. And if the company really wanted to make things right, they'd give $1 million to the families of each person that died.
ReplyDeleteThis really rips my balls OFF!!! Who Thinks of this stuff?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteThey wont really need that 30% off after winning a multi million dollar class action suit.
ReplyDeletehmmmm, preeeeeeet-ty sure none of these people will ever want to set foot on a cruise ship again.
ReplyDeleteI know if I'd been thru that, you couldn't pay me to do it again.
What genius at Carnival signed off on this? It won't work & like some said, it will make the survivors angrier.
ReplyDeleteThis is an erroneous report. The refund plus 30 percent is for those with future bookings not those on the voyage that sank. Check your sources, Enty.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with your post Enty
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER
am slightly sick of this era of the sue where people can take a buisness to court and bankrupt them, forcing them to go belly under.
Yes, this shouldnt have happened, yes the passengers should be compensated BUT if Carnival Cruises goes under this will be a job loss for THOUSANDS of people.
And ultimatly money isnt going to erase this experience for the victims.
badtwin is correct, the refund with a 30% discount on a future cruise is for passengers booked on the Concordia on future cruises.
ReplyDeleteThey should give a discount on any Carnival Corp.-owned cruise line, including Princess and Holland America. Get them off Costa, but not on el-cheapo Carnival.
The NY Daily News (& others) reported this same thing, so that may be where Enty got the info from.
ReplyDeleteThere is already a class action lawsuit in the works. I don't think this will sink (NPI) Carnival but it's def. going to reflect poorly on them for many years to come.
