Afghan Family Guilty Of Honor Killings
An Afghan family in Canada was found guilty of killing three teenage sisters and another woman who was childless in a polygamous marriage. The three sisters were killed because they were dating and using the internet. One of the sisters had a boyfriend and the parents found pictures of her hugging her boyfriend and condoms in her room. The other sisters wanted to be put into foster care to get out of the household. Instead the parents killed them all and dumped their bodies in a car and shoved it into a canal and claimed it was an accident. It took a Canadian jury about 15 hours to find the mom and dad and son guilty of first degree murder. They will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.
Excellent. Can't wait for the dad and son to be raped repeatedly in prison.
ReplyDeleteMother: wtf is wrong with you?
There goes my Arrested Development buzz.
ReplyDeleteHow can anyone think that is reasonable behavior?
ReplyDelete25 years? That's it???
ReplyDeleteThe dad looks like Phil Leotardo from the Sopranos
I don't think that's exactly how it happened, but the gist is right in any event.
ReplyDeleteThere was also a bomb scare a few days before the trial ended.
I've been following this trial since the beginning, and I have to say I wasn't entirely sure they could get a conviction. The family was really good at muddying up the facts, "forgeting" things and all of a sudden being unable to speak English and use a translator (which they will probably use an excuse when they appeal).
ReplyDeleteGood. I hope they rot. This is one of the reasons I despise any religion.
ReplyDeleteThey should be killed immediately the very same way they killed the people that died. PERIOD!
ReplyDeleteNolachickee it's life in prison with chance of parole after 25 years concurrent life sentences for all 4 murders.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand. Honestly. Where is the "honor" in killing!?!?? Disown. Be ashamed of. Kill? No.
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible story. RIP ladies.

ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand being unable to control your family brings shame upon the head of the house and the only way to absolve that is to kill them.
But as I am not part of that sud-group of Islam, I really have no idea.
I read on another site that the woman that was killed, listed here as being in a poly-whatever relationship, was also this guys "other" wife, or as they put it, "co-wife".
ReplyDeleteKilling in the name of religion should result in death, no life sentences, no 25-year sentences, just death. The end.
They took, "I brought you into this world I can take you out," to a whole other level. Sad.
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm not going to say that to my son anymore.
May the girls R.I.P
~Bless
This is from an opinion columnist who has been following the trial. Take a look at the statistics contained therein.

If anyone is interested this link takes you to cbc, which has a whole bunch of stories about it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2012/01/30/shafia-trial-verdict-reaction.html
The husband had 3 wives, he killed #1 (who was infertile) and #2 (mother of the 3 girls). The 3rd wife and her son participated in the murders. They also got 25 years-to-life. Horrible, horrible people. But I'm rather angry that social services (which visited the family multiple times) didn't pick up on the poly situation, and the abuse, and move the kids out. It was pretty obvious abuse according to the neighbors and friends of the girls.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't last 2 minutes in a country where honour killings were ok. It's tough because it's part of some peoples culture, no different from bull fighting IMO, but when they think they can spread this awful belief into Western countries and get away with it, that is really something. Arrogance really. Makes me wonder why they wanted to move to Canada when they clearly had no intention of integrating or wanting their daughters to integrate. Those women are in a better place now, away from parents like that.
ReplyDeleteOne of those articles said the father said he felt like a cuckold. I guess that's because he was having sex with his daughters? Why didn't they just stay in Afghanistan if this is how they want to act?
ReplyDeleteAnother story today was of an Afghan wife killed by the husband and his mother because she had another girl child. Shouldn't the women have killed the man for shooting genetically female sperm?!?!?!?!!?
This is why I strive to meet so many people, so events like this will not taint me against an entire nationality. But still, I'm not going to Afghanistan and spending my money. They get enough of my tax money as it is.
Honor killings? murdering your flesh and blood because they're living in a country where there is sex before marriage and carrying condoms is considered responsible? Why did this man move to Canada if he didn't want his children adopting the Canadian way of life? Not to mention that this murder is just plain sick and twisted, no matter what or where they live.
ReplyDeleteMurder is not a religion. Exactly my thoughts after 9/11.
ReplyDeleteSo many woman and girls are beaten, burned, maimed, raped and tortured by the crazy men in the world that claim it's their right to do so in the name of religion.
Makes me sick to my stomach that it's tolerated and encouraged by governments and mothers.
Lucky they live in Canada, do that in texas they will be lucky to get a Halal final meal before riding old sparky.
ReplyDeleteThis stuff gave me the revelation that the atrocity factories of Islam and Christianity needs to be shut down. Jews can stay so can Wiccans and UFO worshipers.
No Wiccan or UFO contactee has ever committed on honor killing or beat their kids to death with a PVC pipe because some d-bag wrote a book claiming the Saucer People that took him told him that is the "CORRECT" way to raise kids.
We live in the 21st century, why are we still trying to live our lives by the standards, practices and prejudices of a DEAD bronze age culture.
This crap that makes me glad that Atheism is on the RISE in the USA.
What a BASTARD. Hope no one pee's on him....
ReplyDeleteThis has nothing to do with God, no matter what anyone says.
ReplyDeleteWe are all given free will. These evil monsters chose to kill their daughters, just as Athiests do here, and Wiccans (I'd bet anything those white trash people up in Maine who killed baby Ayla would deem themselves Wiccan), so it's NOT about God. It's only about choices people have made.
And I am sorry that so many humans have perversed God so much so, that it has gotten to this point where people now shun God.
Uh, Gary, look up "haredi".
ReplyDeleteI'd say they should kill their own damn selves if they feel their head has had shame brought upon it.
ReplyDeleteThis is some real stone age shit. Come ON! Unreal.

ReplyDeleteLike most Canadians, it's been hard not to follow this story. This was obviously the correct verdict, and I'm glad they were all found guilty so quickly. Their stories were absolutely ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad we don't have the death penalty in Canada. Much like "honour" killings, the death penalty is some archaic shit. In my humble opinion, of course (and, I think, most Canadians).
^Agreed. Something about the death penalty doesn't seem right, does it?
ReplyDeleteDeath is an easy way out for a murderer. A man that rapes and murders children, maybe instead of the death penalty, we can cut his pee pee off or devise some system where they can be tormented or shunned from society for the rest of their miserable lives.
ReplyDeleteVicki, I was about to say the same thing. The Haredi are awful. The uber-Orthodox run Israel like it's Iran. I don't understand how they play the democracy card when fanatics run the show.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Gary.
ReplyDeleteBuddhists are okay. We don't even believe in a god.
Way to go Canada! These people have no honor.
ReplyDeleteOmama, whilst I agree murder should have nothing to do with a god, unfortunately there are individuals & groups in many religions who commit murders in the name of their god. There always seems to be a way for them to justify their actions using their chosen texts.
ReplyDeleteCrila, I didnt read that there was any child rape involved here - I understood that the honour killing of the daughters was a result of them not remaining chaste. Not any better though in my opinion.
And co-sign Rocket Queen: I am so glad that Australia doesn't have the death penalty either - I will go further than archaic though and add hypocritical.
Hey Gary! I'm Catholic, and your comments offend me. Not even the young, naïve, rambunctious little seventh graders I teach would say something so ignorant. I'll give you the same advice I give them: "Think before you speak!"
ReplyDeleteGary-I can assure you, if you look hard enough into any religion or group you will find sick and evil individuals. Unfortunately some people, like Muslims and Catholics, bear the brunt of the acts of a very small group of people that belong to their religions. I am neither of those religions but I certainly wouldn't say that all Muslims are bad because of what an Islamic extremist might do. That's the same ridiculous ignorance that is used to stereotype people of different races (as a result of the actions of some people within those races).
ReplyDeleteAs far as this story - tragic. I can't bring myself to understand how a family could consider it honorable to murder someone in cold blood. I watched a documentary about a country under some extremist regime in the Middle East and there were images of women being hanged and stories of women being locked in jail and condemned to death for adultery (they were actually rape victims). It's so hard for me to think that any person could think that this way of life is okay but I guess if you're socialized to believe it is, then you will. However, this man moved his family to a free country and tried to bring that crap with him and now 4 innocent people have lost their lives. If I had my way, these three a**holes would suffer for 25 years, live off bread and water, and then be put to death. No mercy for the remorseless.
Someone mentioned concurrent sentences. Canada doesn't have concurrent sentences. They are sentenced to life which means they are eligible to apply for parole after 25 years. It doesn't mean they get it.
ReplyDeleteWhat I wonder is where did the girls die. They drowned but it was never established where.
And yeah, count me in as another that finds the death penalty an archaic and savage form of punishment.
They should get Dangerous offender status, so they are locked up permanently.
ReplyDeleteThey should also get 4 x 25yrs = 100yrs.
This is what happens when you have middle eastern refugees and refugees from other cultures such as Islam into western society. Also I would like to know how these refugees had the money for a Lexus car to drown their family members in, and how they can afford their legal fees and an appeal., Here I am fighting and sweating and working my butt off to make a dollar that I can keep with out the gov't taking it away in taxes, and these F'n refugees come here and start off in better shape than I do. No bloody wonder I pay so much in taxes, so the gov't can give to f'n refugees to buy a house and a Lexus, so they can murder their family in it.
It's always the women who end up being victims of extremist religions. ALWAYS. I'm tired of it. Anyone else?
ReplyDelete@Picasso, I'm not defending this family but really? The gov't gives "f'n refugees" enough money to buy a house and a Lexus? You believe that? Or is it possible that they (the f'n refugees you mentioned) work hard at jobs and also pay taxes? Yes there is welfare fraud but Canadians born in Canada commit welfare fraud all the time.
ReplyDeleteDeal with your anger, don't paint everything with hate.
And also, just because someone isn't from here doesn't make them a "f'n refugee." You've heard of landed immigrant status, right?
ReplyDeleteHi, altho i have been following cdan for a while, this is my first posting here.. This case has nothing to do with religion but cultural practices which practices male superiority.. Pls dont equate honor killings with Islam .. Its something these atrocious males would lean on to justify their evil deeds!! May they rot in jail
ReplyDeleteThis happened in my backyard ... just 40 mins down the road from me. I've boated in that area my whole life. Everyone tonight was talking about it at karate. Our local paper dedicated the whole edition to the verdict. Its not an honor killing, its murder. They will not survive in prison long. It is frowned upon when you kill your children in the prison here, which is about 70 mins fron me. They will be killed in prison. One thing that was brought to lite today is that the father can still collect $1 million dollars from his car insurance because they died in his car. This was the latest news that they were talking about on the 6pm news. RIP Ladies. Canada fought & won for you girls.
ReplyDelete@Picasso One - had you bothered to read any of the coverage of this trial, you would have noted that the Shafia's were very well off, and were before they arrived in Canada. And they weren't refugees either, they were immigrants. There is a difference.
ReplyDeleteThey are still murderers though.
Another sad thing is they don't understand just how wrong it is. So glad they were convicted - perhaps it will finally show others that Canada is not a place to practice such archaic cultural beliefs. It has to stop.
ReplyDeleteIf only Jassi's mother and uncle could be tried here for first degree murder.
He killed the wife that couldn't have children because she couldn't give him more children to eventually murder? RIP innocent victims of this monster.
ReplyDelete@Diane. I am not an insurance agent, so I might be wrong. But there are alot of clauses in insurance that say they will not give you money if your disabilty or even death was self inflicted. So I am guessing the same thing applies to murder, which Shafia was charged with. He won't be seeing a penny of that claim should he have the balls enough to actually TRY and claim it.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't get a million dollars for car insurance. He PAID a million point something for a strip mall north of Montreal that he owns. They were saying on the news that even though he is in jail his personal wealth isn't in jeopardy and used that as an example.
ReplyDeleteSomething similar happened last year in Belgium, the family was from Pakistan and the brother killed his own sister because she didn't want to marry someone she didn't choose.
ReplyDeleteWhere was the indignation when parissucks denied Kim K humanity because of her sex tape? The way of thinking is exactly the same, inappropriate sexual conduct == bringing shame on family/the entirety of the female gender. And how about those of you who professes the desire to punch a 17 y.o. boy for not fitting your image of masculinity?

That's the way it will always be. Religion has been used as a way to keep women suppressed for centuries.
I would be surprised if the idea of god was invented because some woman didn't cook some guy's T-Rex steak the right way.
*wouldn't be surprised
ReplyDeleteUgh only had one cup of coffee so far.
@SueEllen. Yes, they did pay $1million for the strip mall, but also on the local news last night that were talking about the $1million vehcile insurance that he can claim. Also, the family is well off, look at the manison they were building. They will still have access to the money, it will just be controlled by the lawyers. Oh ya, this morning it was announced that they have filed an appeal. Fuckers!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks SueEllen, RocketQueen, Anita and others for setting the record straight.
ReplyDeleteThis family was very wealthy. There wer "only" two wives - one who was killed with the girls - she was infertile, and the second wife, who bore all the children.
A finding of guilt of murder in the first degree is an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole for 25 years - and as Sue Ellen pointed out, that doesn't mean they will get parole, just that they are eligible for it.
This man, Shafia, absolutely destroyed his family. There are three more children who are now in foster care. We should also feel sorry for those kids, because they lost their whole family. But the lining in the silver cloud is that just maybe, these kids will have a chance at a normal life.
And I'm glad too, that we don't have the death penalty in Canada. Anyway, spending the next 25 years in prison will be a far better punishment than death, especially for the father. I would be very surprised if he survives prison.
I hope he survives long enough to see at least one of the younger kids grow up to be the complete antithesis of everything he believes.
ReplyDeleteThose kids better be put in a witness protection program. Nothing will stop him from "raising" the surviving kids. He can always get somebody to kill them if they step out of line.
Sounds like they won't be getting the insurance payout: http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/Family+insurance+payout/6075538/story.html
ReplyDeleteAnd I assume they will be kept in solitary confinement in prison for their own protection.
We need the death penalty in the US because so many states let out killers to kill again and again and sometimes even again.
ReplyDeleteIf they would keep killers in jail forever so the remainder of us would be safe nobody would want the death penalty. It wouldn't be needed.
At least the feds seem to keep the killers locked up forever.
Thank you anita, Casey (and others). This man was by no means a refugee, so you can put a cork in that rant. He came as an immigrant investor - legally and via due process. But feel free to twist the story to advertise your hatred of the Canadian refugee process /eyeroll
ReplyDeleteGary T. Burnaska'I think an Egyptian man in Texas did commit the "honor" killings of his 2 daughters and he is still on the loose.
