Giuliana Rancic Will Have A Double Mastectomy
Giuliana Rancic and her husband were on The Today Show this morning and I felt for her. When it comes to her whole eating not eating thing, I generally think she is trying to foll people or fool herself, but I hate to see anyone suffer and you know she and her husband are suffering right now. On the program she said that lumpectomy and radiation had not worked and instead of trying that again, she had decided to have a double mastectomy because there would only be a one percent chance that the cancer would return after the procedure. I think it is the right decision. Waiting while you try the other options only increases the chance that something might go wrong or that the cancer might spread. I really feel for them both and I hope for nothing but the best for her and Bill. Oh, and as Wanda Sykes famously said not too long ago. Get ready to do a lot of walking Giuliana.
good luck to her :)
ReplyDeleteI don't like this woman at all, but this is very sad. best of health to her.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck. Not a fan, but I'm glad that she is, as did Wanda Sykes before her, putting it out there that a double mastectomy is ok. That your breasts are not representing what you are as a woman.
ReplyDeleteJust get rid of it once and for all, and live the rest of your life in peace, not always wondering if breast cancer would show up again.
I'm very happy that I opted for a bilateral mastectomy when I was first diagnosed. I just wanted them gone, even tho only one had cancer. I'm too much of a wimp to worry about cancer coming back for the rest of my life.
ReplyDeleteThere are worse things in life than losing your breasts.
i hope the best for her
ReplyDeletewow, that's rough. What did Wanda Sykes mean about doing a lot of walking?
ReplyDelete@JJ - very courageous. wish you perfect health for here on onward.
ReplyDeleteCan't stand her, but good for her.
ReplyDeleteDon't care for her either, but wish her the best and for not liking her, my heart sure went out when I read this. My mom's been battling cancer for three years now and it's been rough for everyone involved.
ReplyDeleteYeah what does the walking comment from Wanda mean?
ReplyDeleteI am not a big fan of this woman. We have heard all about her fertility issues and now her breast cancer. I mean maybe she is trying to help but sometimes you really want people to keep their private stuff private.
And she seems okay with getting rid of her breasts and having other surgery to replace them but she cannot dream about adotping? Come on. There are so many kids that need a home. You take a 3 or 4 yr old? Now you'll impress me.
Thanks Rita,
ReplyDeleteI assumed the walking comment was about all the breast cancer relays and the 3 day race.
I don't know if others were able to search this site for the post on Wanda Sykes?
ReplyDeleteNo search seems to work on my end.
Back to Wanda, a few months ago Enty posted an interview between Wanda and Ellen, where Wanda has revealed that she had also battled breast cancer, and opted for a double mastectomy.
And seeing how she already is the poster child for black-comedians-married-lesbians-with-white-children (take a breath now), she didn't want to be the poster child for breast cancer as well. She's already participating in all sorts of walk-a-thons.
Did I get this right?
One of my friends is going to be on the tv show "The Doctors" on Wednesday to talk about undergoing a prophylactic double mastectomy at 30 so this hits close to home (she tested positive for the cancer gene)... It's a reminder to all the 20 and 30 somethings to do your regular exams!
ReplyDeleteI wish nothing but the best of luck to Giuliana!!
I've been in healthcare for more than 15 years now. When I first started, the prophylactic double mastectomy was pretty controversial. Over time, it has become a very popular treatment for breast cancer, especially among women who carry the breast cancer gene.
ReplyDeleteIt's unequivocally the choice I'd make. The thing about breast cancer patients is they are always waiting for the "other shoe to drop," i.e., living their life in fear of recurrence in the same or other breast. You feel like you're on borrowed time until the cancer comes back, it's like living under a dark cloud all the time. The prophylactic double mastectomy option frees you from those worries. You just heal from the surgery, get reconstruction if you want it, and get on with your life.
Best wishes to Giuliana.
I think Wanda's comment was a joke about all the fundraising walks for breast cancer research.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of Giuliana's but I sincerely wish her all the best. I think I would have made the same choice if I were in her shoes. Like little miss smoke and mirrors said, it would probably give you the most peace of mind so you could move on with your life.
My sister and I both have the breast cancer gene. We are in our early 40s and neither of us has had cancer. My sister opted for the prophylactic mastectomies, but I have not had any surgery at this point. It's not the easy decision you might think, trust me. Difficult stuff.
ReplyDeleteChristina Applegate did this too, and i loved what she said in an interview about how you get to choose the exact breasts you want when you have them reconstructed, saying "these boobs will never sag!" Very funny, and a positive spin on a really difficult experience.
ReplyDeleteI wish her nothing but the best. I think it is great that she is speaking openly abvout this; I am not a fan of hers per se, but think that the more people talk about this procedure as being a lifesaver for so many women, the more women will see it as that, not as something that is going to take their womanhood away. Did that make sense? Sleep deprived...
ReplyDeleteI don't know who she is but I wouldn't wish this on anyone. The doctor do a beautiful job of reconstruction now so after its finished she can try to get back to some kind of normal...
ReplyDeleteWhen Christina Applegate found out she had breast cancer, she didn't even wait to see if chemo or radiation worked to shrink it. She just decided to have the double masectomy. That's what I would do too.
ReplyDeleteI really feel for her, but I'm glad she has Bill by her side. He really seems to be in love with her.
ReplyDeleteJJ - I am glad you are okay!
ReplyDeleteI wish Giuliana all the best as well.
Obviously I don't know for sure, but I think if presented with that situation, I would want the cancer out of me so badly that I would opt for the surgery immediately. Hopefully that is not a decision I will ever have to make. To those who have, I admire your courage.
Damn. That's rough. I agree, I think she's making the best decision. Cancer sucks.
ReplyDeleteYou do hear about this more & more now where it was kind of shocking in the past.
ReplyDeleteI wish her good health and anyone else that is fighting this disease (or any other for that matter).
I'm not at all a fan of hers, but I do hope she gets through this okay. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteBless her heart. It seems like she has the support of a loving husband, and maybe other family to help her get through this. It's a tough decision, but I would do it, after seeing what my mom went through. She had her lump removed and did not seek any further treatment, and suffered terribly in the end.
ReplyDeletemy mother had a double over 20 years ago and the breast cancer still returned, in the lymph nodes under her arms.
ReplyDeleteshe survived that too!!!
I like her, I had hoped she was all clear.
ReplyDeletei'm surprised at how many of you don't like her. she seems open and honest to me. i like her. she does this show with ryan seacrest (gag) that comes on about midnight here, can't remember the name of it. and she still looks good. don't know how she can keep it together to do the show. and she's so tiny! does she even weigh 100lbs? seems like it was so quick. wondering if she has another cancer as well. hope she drops the whole "have a baby thing"! my god, adopt and call it a day. her body does not need more trauma.
ReplyDeleteI don't hate her at all. I feel really badly for both of them. I wish her well and absolutely agree with the others that I hope if all goes well that they consider adoption, after all that they've been through at this point.
ReplyDeleteGood health to her.
ReplyDeleteI was stage 1 three years ago and fortunately did not carry the BRACA gene. My surgeon informed me that if I did, it would be an automatic double masectomy. I have quite a few friends who opted for a double masectomy since they are carriers and didn't think they had many other options.
ReplyDeleteMy sister in law was diagnosed last year stage 3, and carried the BRACA gene. The cancer went into 46 of her lymph nodes. A masectomy is "out of the question" for her and my brother in law. They are body parts. It is a difficult situation to be in, but your life comes first.
