Gerard Butler Hospitalized After Two Wave Hold-Down
Talk to a surfer who surfs big waves and they will tell you how life changing a two wave hold-down is. Gerard Butler just suffered his first while filming scenes for his new movie and was rushed to the hospital, but he will be fine. A two wave hold-down is exactly what you think it is. You get pulled under by one wave and can't make it back to the surface by the time the next wave comes through. You think to yourself that you will never breathe again and are going to die right there.
Think he'll realize he's human like the rest of us...?

ReplyDeleteJust read about this in my local paper this morning - the surfers he was with are from my home town. Mavericks is serious business. I actually can't believe they took a novice like Butler out there. People die at Maverick's on the regular. The waves are HUGE!

ReplyDeleteThanks Vicki, and it WAS scary! The worst thing? I was vacationing with my gay guy friend (gay husband), and HE GOT SAVED BY THE CUTE BODYGUARD, while I was left fending for myself and trying to find my bottom bikini (lost it in the waves).

Wow! When we used to cut school here in the east bay, back in the mid-ninties when Maverick's first started getting popular with the non bay riders, we used to go out to Pillar Point and just watch the waves. I've been to a lot of places around the world, but I swear I've never seen nature so beautiful and so angry in one singular moment. 20 to 80 foot tall, thick, massive, inky green waves breaking right to left and only about 400 yards from a sheer rock face. You have to drop in high and from the right to ride out left or you'll hit the rocks and you continuously get rolled and rolled until it pushes you under and spits you out half a mile away near shore. We thought we were bad asses for surfing at Fort Point, but Maverick's makes the point look like you're merely wading in a bathtub while wearing floaties and a lifejacket. In about 20 trips, I've only ever seen 4 or 5 people actually riding pipe. This dude seriously got lucky. If you ever end up in SF around winter, you have to check it out. You will never forget it.
ReplyDeleteI've been under for one, got knocked sideways, scared as shit it was all over. I coughed up ocean water for a long, long time after I got out.
ReplyDeleteI've had it happen to me, and even though I am a super-strong swimmer and the "floatiest" person alive, I was convinced I was going to die. The waves spin you around and around so you are completely confused, and the undertow is so strong it feels like there are hands holding you down. It's only happened once and I hope it never happens again. Glad my not-so-secret dirty-boy crush is OK!

ReplyDeleteTrogdor, there's a restaurant right outside of Half Moon Bay that is above a rocky section of the coast. My mom and I had dinner there one night when it was storming, and it was absolutely spectacular watching the waves crash.

ReplyDeleteThis is one of my worst nightmares, although not specifically a two wave. I can't and don't swim. I don't get in water past my ribs and I won't dunk my head. I can't put my head under water.
