Christina Perri Fights Off Carjacker

Can you imagine driving in the middle of the night and as you slow down to pull into a building some strange guy opens up your car door and tries to get you over to the passenger side while he moves into the driver's side. That would freak me out. Christina Perri, who sings Jar Of Hearts had that happen to her this past week and somehow fought the guy off even though he was hitting her and she kept honking the horn to try and get the attention of people. Eventually the guy ran off and police responded to the scene but were unable to find the suspect. This all happened at 2am so you know there were very few people out. I am surprised that her doors do not automatically lock when she is driving and that he was able to just open the car door. I'm glad she is ok. I really like that song too.

  1. The song is ok, but she sings horribly. Yuck. That being said, I'm glad she's ok.

  2. Didn't like the song, but she is very pretty. Glad she is OK. And you must always always lock your doors if they don't automatically lock.

  3. I have a 2011 car that does not automatically lock, so they do still exist. My previous vehicle automatically locked when the car was put into drive. I guess I should get in the habit of locking the doors myself.

I like the song, not crazy about her voice, but it's ok.

  4. My car also doesn't automatically lock. Hmmm.

  5. That is why you should always lock the doors. I have an older car, but as soon as I put it into gear, the doors lock automatically.

Sometimes when I get into the car in a parking lot, before I even start the engine, I lock the doors. Call me paranoid. Years ago, my sister was stopped at a light (with her kids in the car), and some whackjob opened the door. She floored it and got away, but if not for her fast thinking, it could have turned out badly.

I have an older car that doesn't automatically lock the doors. I keep the doors locked at all times. I rarely have passengers, so it's easy for me to do. Gotta protect yourself!

  9. My new car doors lock automatically too and I hate it! I was going to figure out if I can turn that feature off ... maybe now I won't. :/ I thought having the doors locked would make it more difficult in case I get in a car accident and I cannot open the doors myself ... the rescuers would be locked out, KWIM? Is there truth to that? Would I be better off having the doors automatically lock?

  10. Hated that song.

When I was a kid my mom watched the soaps. One story line featured a woman stopped at a red light at night and some thug with a weapon opened the door and abducted her. That, believe it or not, made an impression and I always compulsively lock my car doors immediately after I get in or out.

  11. @chopchop - there's a (small) tool that you can keep in your glove compartment that will cut through glass and your seat belt if trapped (I saw this years ago on a news show about how to get out of your car if it went into the water).

  12. Many years ago in my hometown of Charlotte, NC..I had just gotten in my car and locked my doors like my mama taught me(I was 17 I think) and someone came and tried to get in my car. BROAD DAYLIGHT! I was very surprised but not as much as he was especially when I laid on my horn. Everyone should lock their doors!

I wasn't even aware that people drove around without locking their car doors first. To do otherwise just seems to beg for trouble!

  14. Well first of all doesn't she know to drive with her doors locked !?

  15. Always lock my doors. My husband used to complain, but then the car jackings at traffic lights ramped up in our home town in Australia. We were also told about a woman abducted and raped after two guys got in her unlocked car after she slowed down to exit a car park. No more complaining.

  16. I have the auto-lock option and I set it to auto-lock because I think it's a good idea. Not that anyone steals Ford's, but you know. Just in case.

Shoot, I never lock my doors unless I'm in a notorious neighborhood. Guess I'd better start, huh?

  18. Good for her. I think. My daughter was the biggest cry baby growing up. I needed a microscope to see her many "owies".

21 years later, she's in San Francisco, and some guy snatches her purse. She's with her hipster guy best friend, so she's basically screwn.

She chases the purse snatcher down in high heels until he jumps into a car. She then confronts the perps - there were about 5 guys in the car - gets a gun pulled on her, reaches in, grabs her purse, gets dragged a few blocks because she refuses to let go of her purse, and then denies the ambulance to the hospital, and survives with some nasty road rash on her feet and back.

I was horrified and proud at the same time. Of course I told her she should've just let them take her purse. She accidentally let it slip about the gun being pulled on her (the girl has instant karma and can't lie). Anyway, she got her purse - because, as she stated, "There's no way in hell I'm going to let someone who drives a better car than I do get my purse."

I never know how to feel about this, but I always love to hear about women sticking up for themselves, and winning.

  20. I have manual door locks. I always lock them and check the back seat before getting in the car. (Thanks to my Dad telling me repeatedly.) Good for her being tough. My Mom was from Philly, you don't mess with those chicks.

I like jar of hearts. Great lyrics.

  21. @Chopchop, the Car Talk guys talked about that years ago. They said rescuers have means/equipment to get to you, doors locked or not, and recommend locking the doors because the car's structural integrity in an accident is better with locked doors, and that actually keeps you safer (less likely to "need" rescuers). Unlocked doors may come open in a rollover, or as a car is crushed front to back (as in a high-speed rear-end accident that pushes you into an immovable object); locked doors are less likely to open like that, keeping you inside in a rollover, and letting the car bear the force of a crush accident, and that protects you more.

(And always wear a seat belt!)

  22. I usually don't lock my car doors unless I am in a neighborhood that doesn't look safe. However, I always lock my front door when I am home, even though my husband doesn't. I can think of at least four different times when strange people walked into my house. None of them were going to kill me, but they had no business being in my home.
