Steve McQueen Almost Killed By Manson Family

There is a new biography coming out about Steve McQueen. It is fascinating to say the least and really exposes all the bad things about him you have always heard whispers about, but never have really been explored. It talks about his multiple affairs and how he would have sex with anyone at anytime and enjoyed spending time watching soaps while in a drug induced haze. He rented a room at the Beverly Wilshire and would have sex with actresses or models or hookers there almost everyday. This of course happened while he was married and not married. The book also talks about how he abused Ali McGraw regularly and honestly, his life is just one big blind item. One of the most interesting things I read, but did not know was that his best friend was this hairdresser. He and the hairdresser would have sex with Sharon Tate all the time even after she married Roman Polanski. Well, one night Steve and the hairdresser were going to go to this party at Sharon's house and have a little orgy. This is while Steve was married. Anyway, Steve got a call from this other woman he was having sex with at the time so he skipped the party. Everyone at the party, including the hairdresser was killed by the Manson Family.

Well, he dodged a bullet there. But he's dead anyway.

  2. Sharon Tate was 8 months and a half pregnant when she was murdered. So, it's highly doubtful she was ready for an orgy.

  3. I think what Enty is trying to say is that she was killed later, but that coincidentally everybody who ended up being targeted was present at that party...does that make sense?

  4. Steve missing the party that night is old news. I believe that Sharon and Steve stayed in touch after their affair and it took her a long time to get over him. She was definitely not planning an orgy for that evening.

  5. Coincidentally I'm in the middle of reading "Helter Skelter" - the book talks about how tons of people, including big (at the time) stars said they were going to a party there that night but something kept them from going. All bullshit trying to make themselves look important. There was never a party planned. Other than Jay Sebring and that poor kid visiting the caretaker, Abby and Voytek were staying there for a few days and Sharon lived there. Just sounds like a lot of movie folk trying to sound important and endangered. I don't know about the other stuff but I just don't believe this.

  6. Damn that was one manly man. I thought he was hot even when I was a little girl.

  7. However the abusing part sucks and way lessens his mystique in my eyes. Good for Ali getting away from him.

  8. And wait a minute--Sharon Tate was far-along pregnant at the time of the murders. Is this stating she would have threesomes while preggers? Dayum.

  14. I wonder what soaps he watched? Was he a Ryan's Hope, Edge of Night fan Days and the Doctors??
    Enquiring minds want to know.

I have heard he was suppose to drop by the house that night too.

Supposedly good old Steve did the nasty with Paul Newman too. He was also not just a fan of hookers but was one before fame hit.

To me ol' Steve looked like an All My Children/One Life to Live/General Hospital fan.

  16. lol @Brenda!

It is amazing how one phone call or one alarm clock that doesn't go off can save your life.

  17. @Amy in MI, I knew about Sebring but I thought it was interesting that Enty didn't specify he or she.

  18. This will be a good read, I enjoy reading about the stars from that era. He had the same type of lung cancer than Christopher Reeves wife got and he went pretty quick. It seemed like they announced he had cancer and then a week or so later he was dead.
I read somewhere that Doris Days son was supposed to be the target and the Manson idiots got the houses mixed up.

  19. @Angela: i agree with you

  20. I was writing this when The Black Cat posted...
I heard and read as well that the real target that night was Terry Melcher, music producer and Doris Day's son. He'd met Manson through Beach Boy Dennis Wilson (who had Manson and friends living with him in L.A. at the time!) and recorded two of Manson's songs with the Beach Boys but declined to sign Manson himself and thought better of associating with the group after getting to know them. Manson had met Melcher at that house when he was living there with Candice Bergen, felt betrayed by Melcher's dropping him as a potential recording artist, and that's why the Cielo Drive location was targeted that night, either to kill him outright or "send him a message" about "betraying" Manson.

  21. ITA w/ selenakyle. He was totally hot but the mystique of hotness has worn off with all of this info.

He's only hot if you haven't seen him on Full Frontal Friday.

It IS amazing how a phone call or lack thereof can save your life. Years ago when I was living in Kansas City, one Friday afternoon my bestie heard about tea dances at the Hyatt at Crown Center, and wanted to call me and get me to go with her...and I'd have gone, I was really needing to get out...but her boss gave her some last minute work that kept her busy until after 5:00, so she went on to the dance and I went home to mow the lawn. I was still out there sweating when I saw the Life Flight helicopters start passing overhead, and turns out that's when the skywalks at the Hyatt collapsed, killing a lot of people (I'm thinking around 150, but it was a long time ago) and injuring many many more. My friend was not killed, but she had a lot of mental issues afterward due to being there and seeing it happen, and for a long time could not go into tall buildings.

And that's how I ended up meeting Melvin Belli. He partnered up with my law firm on representing a lot of the victims. He had very dandruffy shoulders.

  24. @ Robert, I read the same thing but that Manson knew that Melcher didn't live there anymore, but target Cielo Drive because the "location" caused him distress or something.

Also, McQueen's grandson is on the Vampire Diaries, and he looks a lot like him!

  25. I read Helter Skelter in the 90's and it scared the shit out of me. It still fascinates me though, I've watched a relatively new docu on the the woman that ended up giving all the evidence. She was there, but didn't participate. it was heartbreaking.

  26. Yes, Helter Skelter scared me too, and I did see the documentary of the woman as well and yes heartbreaking.

Boo for Steve Mc Queen, I think there are more cases of abuse in Hollywood than we know about and can speculate about.

I hope nobody ever searches on my computer to wonder what Full Frontal Friday is, I had to go and look.....again...lol.

  27. I'll never, ever buy into the story that Linda Kasabian sold to weasel out of responsibility for her part in what happened. No way did she not participate. No. Freaking. Way.

  28. You may not find this interesting but my dad, who is and was an entertainer was also targeted by the manson's. They broke into his house to kill him but no one was home at the time. So they just stole a cowboy hat. When he came home they went in the back yard and watched him through the windows. The house was in Sherman Oaks and mostly made of large windows in the back. They got scared off when they saw my dad arming his security system. He was also friends with Sharon Tate so I guess that's where they got the idea. Also, he was well known at the time. My dad had no idea until years later.

  29. I am also aware of the Terry Melcher stories. Actually, the Beach Boys were starting their own label, Brother Records, and had asked Terry Melcher (who had some experience with the Byrds) to look for promising new acts. Dennis Wilson recommended Charles Manson because he had some talent and he was surrounded by hot chicks. One or two of his songs were actually recorded by the Beach Boys but they were uncredited and rewritten.
The first audition went "fine" but something went wrong during the second one and Manson ended up beating one of the musicians because he hadn't played the way he expected. Melcher recommended the label no to work with Manson.

There was another victim that was targeted by the Manson family: Tom Jones. A girl threw a hotel key at him during a show, and they were expecting him to join her in the hotel room, have sex with her and then have his throat sliced.

  30. Meh. Half of Hollywood claimed they were "supposed to be there" that night, and discount 90% of those stories.

  31. I call BS as well on this. Sharon Tate was apparently smitten and very happy with Roman at the time of her death....along with being very pregnant.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Other stories in the Helter Skelter book, like the string of unsolved murders the police think the Family was connected to, are scary as hell, too...

  33. Funny, I just saw a documentary on McQueen. I can't believe he's been gone for over thirty years. I think he would be classified as a sex addict now.

From all I've read, Sharon Tate was obsessed with Roman Polanski and the feeling was not mutual. I don't buy her and McQueen still having an affair after she was married and nearly nine months pregnant.

  34. Crystal - that's freaky!

  35. This brought back memories of that Helter Skelter book. I ended up spending an hour late last night reading Susan Atkins' site where she explains the chain of events. Yes, she minimizes her participation, but the chain of events makes logical sense. This case gets mystified but really, they were just drug addicts.

  36. I guess I liked Steve's image up until the time he called a director to complain that he had one less line in the script than his co-star. The image may be macho but the man was insecure.

  37. I saw a bio on McQueen last year as well and had no idea how fucked up he was. He seemed to just be a very angry person all the time, and the drugs certainly didn't help. By all accounts, McGraw went through hell with him.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree on the BS of everyone who almost went there that night. Whatevs.

@Sis I was going to say the same thing! I quite like little Steve McQueen the grandson, on Vampire Diaries...I think the resemblance is kinda vague, he's darker (1/4 Filipino, right?) but he's very handsome and not a bad young actor. Read some things on him that portrayed him as a bit haunted by his grandfather's notariety and um...social legacy. In AA & such. Rooting for him anyway, tho, so cute...

  39. Maybe if a celebrity had been killed that night, California might not have repealed the death penalty.
