Katie Holmes Is Halfway Through Her Contract!
Yesterday marked the 5th anniversary of the marriage of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. It also marked the halfway point to the end of her contract. Everyday now, Katie can walk with a little extra spring in her step and know she is on the downside of the last five years. It seems like it has been every day of that five years doesn't it? The only thing that seems long ago was the couch jumping episode on Oprah. Between that and his Scientology rant that was broadcast to everyone, Tom has had a few tough years trying to make a comeback. That and some really horrible choices movie wise and the dumping of his co-producer and trying to keep every job in the family.
With that Ghost Protocol thing coming out and his probable utter destruction of Jack Reacher, he will be in two really high grossing movies this year. Does that make him a huge star again? I think you could put anyone in those two movies and they would make a ton of money. He is just a puzzle piece.
As for Katie? These five years have seen a promising acting career go much the way of a downward spiraling toilet. Pieces Of April was so long ago. Now when she is given a leading role she destroys the movie. Yes, she is in Jack And Jill and tell me if you find one good review at all. Even in The Kennedys which got some acting nominations, Katie was not going to get them. She is good t one thing now and one thing only. Sweeps casting. Put her in How I Met Your Mother or So You Think You Can Dance and she does ok. Anything more than that, and no. I think her problem is she got spoiled. She went from being another mid-level actress who drove herself everywhere and chain smoked to stay thin to being whisked around in private jets and helicopters with 24 hour bodyguards, becoming a mom and dealing with Tom Cruise. After the five years is up and she goes back to being normal, I think we will see a solid few acting performances from her. The big question is does she get to keep Suri?
No way does she get to keep Suri. She might decide to stay w/ Tom till Suri is way older just because of that.
ReplyDeleteI never thought she was a good actress. She may change my mind when she's cast as a wooden door that can talk, though.
ReplyDeleteTom is batshit but I actually do think he's a good actor. Good enough to make me forget he's batshit when I watch his movies, at least.
She keeps Suri, Tom is not her biological father and Katie can prove it.
ReplyDeleteHowever Suri is already such a monster and by then she'll be 10 so who knows who the little terror will want to stay with.
Honestly MISCH it wouldn't surprise me if Katie signed something that made it so she would never prove that Tom is not the father.
ReplyDeleteI'm just thinking back to Nicole, I don't think anyone would have imagined her winning an academy award when she was married to Tom, so who know?
ReplyDeleteI liked Katie in "Go" and "Pieces Of april", but other than that she sucks.
ReplyDeleteIt's only been 5 years? It seems like for ages I have been tortured by these two's "love".
I miss the Tom Cruise that went around saving lives. Wheres that guy?
ReplyDeleteKatie Holmes in that " Got You Where I Want You " video will always be the ultimate in beauty to me in the 90's. I didnt think anyone could be any prettier back then.
ReplyDeleteKatie is already doing better because she hasn't been under Toms thumb (heh) for 2 years. They split up when she went to NY to do that failure of a play.
ReplyDeleteshe got me good in 'pieces of april.' she CAN act. i hope her career picks back up when she's free of midget xenu. if anything, i feel sorry for her. she was young when she entered into this deal---she'll be older and much wiser when it's over.
ReplyDeleteSorry, bad math, make that 3 years.
ReplyDeleteI liked her in "Go".
ReplyDeleteJoan Rivers featured her cover for "Marie-Claire last night on "Fashion Police" and got in a few good shots against Cruise. The mag editor looked like she wanted to go through the floor. Suri was said to help her mother dress. Rolled my eyes so hard they're still not back in position.
I don't feel sorry for women who sign long term contracts like this. She put the money ahead of her career, a conscious choice. No sympathy from me.
Yeah, seems like WAY longer than 5 years for me too. Seems like it's been 10. Imagine how poor Katie feels.
ReplyDeleteShe's never really wowed me as an actress. And I'm VERY interested in what the custody arrangement will be.
I don't get the poor Katie stuff either. She knew what she was getting into. She sold herself out and now she's got to live with it. I fell NO pity what-so-ever for that entitled twat.
ReplyDeleteI actually respected Tom as an actor for much of the 90's. He has worked with many of the greatest filmmaker's in film history: Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg, De Palma, Paul Thomas Anderson and the ultimate god of directors - Stanley Kubrick. And he was a very good actor. Probably still is. But his craziness has now overshadowed that. And after talking with people I know that have met him - he can be very cold. One second he's smiling at you like he's your lifelong friend, making you feel like you're the most important person in the world to him in that moment and the next, you don't even exist. He'll take all that faux concern and friendliness he gives you and transports it to the next person - even if you're standing right beside him. It's creepy and chilling the way he does it so effortlessly actually.
ReplyDeleteAnd Katie was becoming a bit of a snob herself, long before she ever met Tom. She'd talk down to people all the time. It's no wonder these two wound up together.
Tom was very good in Fifth of July and other stuff - however even back then I got into arguments with people who said he was great, I would say he is a great technical actor. There's a big difference between being technical and someone who is 100% the role. I studied acting and there's a big difference, one is acting one is being.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I read in the comments on Gawker or such that people who have seen them, in towns where their movies are filmed, say they really seem like the read deal. Who knows? Still doesn't change my mind that Tom is whacked and Katie allowed herself to be taken into that life.
This entire Tom/Katie story is really interesting to me. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds, then read here what REALLY happened.
ReplyDeleteOh, does anyone call them TomKat anymore? Seems like those name mash-ups are fading, finally!
I watched "Pieces of April" again recently, and it was not as good as I remembered. Maybe I'll have to give it another watch since it's almost Thanksgiving. There aren't really that many Thanksgiving movies.
ReplyDeleteShe's been seen smiling so much lately, I thought maybe she only signed on for 5 years?
ReplyDeleteI heard her contract is only for 5 years. must be planning her escape.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone really bought this couple as an actual couple from the get go.
ReplyDeleteAbout 6 years ago I saw Katie ... or Kate, as TC would have it. She came into the BH store I was working at with several Scientology minders behind her.
I could not read her at all. She was big, much taller than I thought she would be. She didn't seem pregnant to me and this is when she was in the early stages of her pregnancy and everyone was debating if she was/wasn't actually pregnant.
@Alicia:That is one of my favorite videos and songs ever. You're right about her.
ReplyDelete@PattiO: "Home for the Holidays", with Julianne Moore, Holly Hunter, RDJ, etc. Directed by Jodie Foster.
ReplyDeleteTo those who say that Katie knew what she was getting into: Beyond the obvious idiocy of contracting yourself to someone in this way, I don't think Katie (or anyone else) could have any inkling of what she might be getting into once the Scientology charm offensive was over and she was under contract. The description of Tom Cruise as warm and personable one moment, cold and controlling the next seems like a pretty good analogy to me. I do feel bad for her, to some extent. What I'm curious about is how Cruise could come after her if she did get smart and decide to abandon ship. He's so set on appearing perfect to the wog world -- how on earth could he retain any goodwill by trying to sue Katie for not holding to the contract?
ReplyDelete@"Enty": "Tom has had a few tough years trying to make a comeback": Comeback from WHAT?! During what years do you imagine his movies weren't making major coin?!
ReplyDeleteThis description of Tom as warm-then-cold makes me wonder if he is somewhere on the sociopathic scale? i.e., no real empathy, faking emotions (except for feel bad for himself), etc.
ReplyDelete@msgirl: As a former professional actor I agree. He is technically great but I don't see much depth. And no way in hell is she getting Suri. And like the pregnancy that lasted a year this has been the longest 5 yrs ever. Really? Just 5?
ReplyDeleteI thought the contract was 5 years.. now since the 5 years is up it turns into 10 years? ok...
ReplyDeleteChristian Bale modeled his character in American Psycho directly after Cruise. He'd watch TC do an interview on TV and mentioned to his movie director how he there was this intensity in his personality but nothing behind the eyes. You can Google and read the exact quote (or find it on Wiki about the American Psycho movie) but TC and the AP character do seem to share a lot in common.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Katie is concerned, I'll never forget that she was on the cover of InStyle magazine right as her relationship with Cruise broke. You have to figure that the interview was done a few months before it was published but I always thought it was telling from what she talked about in that interview and what she was looking forward to in her life (she'd recently broken up with Chris and looking forward to being a single woman) and then WHAM, she's dating Cruise and pregnant and no one saw them together prior. It does cause one to scratch their head and say, "Really???"
If you can find that interview and read it, it's very interesting especially in looking back over what happend after it. It's why I never bought the whole relationship (as well as her robotic answers about Tom and how AMAZING he and CO$ was)and then her body language when he literally dragged her out of that green room on Oprah. She was MORTIFIED. But to hear her tell it later (brainwashed!) she was trying to find him to get on stage.
Liar.
It will be interesting to see how all of this ends, when it ends. Remember, she told Dotson Rader in a creepy interview in Parade Magazine that "she and Tom would always be on their honeymoon...".
Jason - that's totally the impression of Tom I get. Almost sociopathic.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I enjoy the dude in movies. Pretty much every movie I've seen him in, in fact. He's a good actor, period.
RQ I totally agree with you. He IS a good actor. His performance in Magnolia was pretty damn good.
