Guy Ritchie Says Being Married To Madonna Was Like Being In A Soap Opera

It has been three years since Madonna and Guy Ritchie split up. They both have been pretty quiet about the whole thing. Until now. With the sequel to Sherlock Holmes on the way to theatres, Guy Ritchie is doing press so that means he will be asked about Madonna. In an interview with Details he called his marriage to Madonna a soap opera. "I enjoyed my first marriage. It's definitely not something I regret. The experience was ultimately very positive. I love the kids that came out of it, and I could see no other route to take. But you move on, don't you? You're right, I stepped into a soap opera, and I lived in it for quite a long period of my life. I'll probably be more eloquent on it 10 years from now."

He sounds thrilled about it doesn't he. It also seems that with the exception of the kids, he is most happy about making lots of money while being married."When you end up with a lot of the things you set out to chase and find that you've stumbled into all sorts of hollow victories, then you become deeply philosophical. I'm quite happy that that experience was accelerated for me. I'm glad I made money, in other words. And I'm glad I got married."

He seems really enthusiastic about the marriage doesn't he?

  1. wait, so basically he said he married her for her money and the residual fame it gave him. Which gave him a leg up in directing movies? But then regretted it but is happy he is rich from it?

    What an honest gold digger.

  3. So he's glad for the kids and the money that came from his marriage? Hey, good for him, all I got out of my first marriage was the kid. No money. ;)

  6. At least he's honest and it doesn't seem like he regretted the whole thing.

  7. He had the opportunity to say anything awful he wanted to about someone who I'm sure is incredibly difficult, and he went out of his way to say he didn't regret marrying her.

I still haven't quite made sense of the money comment, it's odd, but he gets props from me.

  8. Did he direct any movies while married to Madonna? He did direct one movie with Madonna which bomb as far as I know. So what money did he make unless it's what he got from Madonna for not saying anything bad about her.

  9. anyone who marries a pop icon would have to know its going to be a high maitenance marriage. He is sort of like Justin Theroux. Guy was in a long term relationship and then ditched her when Madonna entered the scene. The glitz & glamour gets old fast. But he gave it a good run almost 10 years with Madonna. That is more then anyone else has lasted.

  10. I think he and Madonna have a no public dissing agreement.

  11. He seems very eloquent about it and thinks he'll be more so in hindsight. As he said, he was glad he made money. And he was glad he got married. Don't think he meant getting married he made more money. "Snatch" was an excellent film as was "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" before it. He made money before he met Madonna.

  12. Meh, I think he was as kind as he could be - I pity the fool who would have to put up with Madonna. If all the reports of her Kabbalah fanaticism are true (like filling the pool with kabbalah water?), it couldn't have been easy. Then again, I've never been a huge fan of Madonna.

I'm sure being married to her WAS a soap opera, let's face it, she is one of the biggest stars in the world.

  14. if he weren't married to madonna he would not be as filthy rich as he is, and I don't think that he would have the opportunity to make a BIG american film if it hadn't been for her and her star power.

"deeply philosophical" though? I think he's giving himself too much credit.

  15. I'd read him quoted as saying it was like "chewing on gristly meat" or some such.

  16. If this was a woman being interviewed we would be calling her a gold digger no question asked. He got roughly around £60 million (inc property & that pub) from the divorce settlement. He could at least actually attempt to sound a little more enthusiastic about the whole thing.

  18. I think it sounds very diplomatic, and I wouldn't read too much into the words he chose. The only thing I'd dissect is the fact that he said, "You're right, I stepped into a soap opera," etc. The "You're right," part leads me to believe the soap opera description was merely the interviewer's, and he agreed with that assessment.

  19. I don't think he can say too much. He keeps saying he doesn't regret it, which makes me think he does!

I still couldn't figure out why Vadge didn't do a prenup with him. She is generally not that dense. She made him a very rich man. They were not as much fun as Vadge and Sean Penn.

I totally read that he came into a ton of money because of her in the context given here. The things he chased were money and fame (through indie director street cred or whatever) and marrying Madonna sped that up for him.

If this were a woman saying this, she'd be villified.

And he chose to marry her so I can't feel sorry for him.

  21. to me, this sounds like someone who felt all they got out of the marriage (kids aside) was the money. you go into a marriage w/ so many hopes and dreams and plans about what you want your life, and the life of your children, to be. having that dream explode in your face is hard. and in 10 years, when the shock of what happened settles in and he has a "normal" life, i think he's correct in saying he'll be better able to discuss it. i would think anyone who has been through a difficult divorce would understand that. he didn't get what he wanted; the great love stoty of his life. but there were other things in life that he wanted, so although the marriage wasn't what he wanted; he got other things he did.

  22. That was actually way more tactful than I thought he'd be (if he's being fully honest, which...he's probably not).
