Mariska Hargitay Trying To Break Angelina Jolie and Rosie O'Donnell's Adoption Record

For the second time in just six months, Mariska Hargitay and her husband have adopted another child. They are currently tied with Madonna and at this rate, they will catch Angelina and Rosie for the celebrity adoption record sometime within the next year. After that, who knows how far they can go. I am only counting adoptions here. Rosie and her former spouse did have a fourth child together but it was via artificial insemination, so that is not going to count. They also were going to adopt another child, but the state of Florida took her away from the couple because they are gay.

Apparently Mariska and her husband thought the second round would take as long as the first, but was approved within a week of completing her application. I guess once they approve you for one child then it is pretty easy after that? I have no idea how the adoption process works.

  1. I guess Mia Farrow is still the queen of adoptions!

  2. This makes me so tired to even think about it. I'm a bit younger and I don't think I could handle 2 babies in my 40's. Best wishes to her and her stamina!

  5. Awesome!! Kids are hard work. I have a toddler right now and do not want anymore children. If I change my mind I'll adopt. Did not like pregnancy.

  6. Me neither, but God bless people who adopt American babies, for starters. That lil chubby one at the bottom is adorable!

  8. Great for her and her husband! What a special thing. My husband is adopted and we definitely plan on paying it forward. I would have never met him had he not been adopted by a sweet, loving family. :)

Three children age 5 or younger makes my head explode to even think about, much less two under the age of one. Congrats to Mariska and her husband, I am really happy for them. I hope she has a Nanny or two as she is still working 4 days a week on L & O SVU.

  12. It is actually that easy after the first one. My cousin and her husband were actually approached by the adoption agency when the woman they adopted their first child from had another child. They called my cousin and asked if her and her husband would be interested in adopting the new baby. From start to finish it was about two months, as opposed to the 2 years it took took the first time. They adopted from Guatemala.

shehla, I'm with you. I have a 3 year old and I'm done. Had a horrible pregnancy and baby who was 2.5 months early. People look at me like I have 2 heads when I say I don't want anymore children.

  15. I don't want to start anything but as an adoptive parent I want to address the comment from selenakyle (and please don't take this as a criticism) but any child - anywhere in the world - who needs a family, deserves a family. There are many, many factors that need to be considered when deciding where and when to adopt and some laws, processes and procedures in the U.S. can make it difficult or prohibitive for some families to adopt domestically. And it is a little known fact that the U.S. also "adopts out" children to other countries. Any story that highlights adoption in a positive manner gets a big "thumbs up" from me. And a plug ... if you have room in your life and heart for a child, consider adoption, or being a foster parent, or volunteering as a Big Brother/Big Sister - it's the greatest gift you'll ever give yourself. Switching off soap box now!

  16. Jessi - I totally agree!

If my husband and I do end up deciding to have kids, I am definitely adopting.

  17. Goober - I totally agree. Some of the orphanages in third world are absolute horror stories compared to the facilities in the US, and I honestly think if I were ever to adopt, it would be from the country in the worst shape....orphanage and poverty-wise.

  18. I have a 5 year old and a 11 month old - I can't imagine adding another one. But I love Mariska even more now, and send lots of congratulations to her on her growing family. The kids are adorable and her smile says it all.
