I Should Have Remembered Hairspray
When the cast of Dancing With The Stars was first announced, I thought that Ricki Lake would finish in the top half, but not much higher. Later though someone reminded me she had been in Hairspray. I had totally forgotten when I made my in mind prediction. Back then when Ricki was cast in the role which changed her life she was cast because she was on the plus size, BUT also because she was a great dancer. That is what really got her that role. It also made me think about the fact that one role can change your life. If you think about it, that was really the only thing she ever did (Yes, she was great in Serial Mom). It was like one second she was in Hairspray and the next she was hosting her own talk show and telling us how babies were born and was everywhere. So, thank you for that John Waters. So, when people marvel at Ricki and her almost perfect scores, they need to remember back in the day she was pretty good. Plus, she has name recognition with youths and people who watch daytime television. That is a very good voting bloc to have. I think Carson is going home this week. Nancy and Chaz have the name recognition and Carson has only been hanging on because people have been worse or unknowns.
I loved Hairspray when I was a kid. So wonderfully camp it almost brings a tear to my eye.
ReplyDeleteRicki Lake is just sort of likable, at least to me. And I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I totally voted for David Arquette, like 5 times.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED her in Mrs. Winterbourne. With Shirley Maclaine, no less, lol
ReplyDeleteI think Nancy or Rob should go next.
ReplyDeleteShe really was great in Hairspray. I assoicate her more with that role than any other. I wonder if people will complain that Ricki has an "unfair" advantage, like they do with the R&B singers that show up sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little confused with the Ricki Lake has name recognition with youths thing? The Ricki Lake Show was on in the 90s. The "youths" today were born in the 90s. I'd say she has more recognition with those in their late 20s into 30s. I wouldn't be surprised if teenagers have no idea who she is.
ReplyDeleteI loved her in Crybaby!
ReplyDeleteI think she was in China Beach, too.
ReplyDeleteShe will claim she has not had ballroom instruction, but any dance training will carry over to another genre. She know counts and basic footwork, she's had training.
ReplyDeleteI am am DWTS addict and this year just isn't doing it for me. Sigh.
Cindy I love that movie also =) Such a sweet story.
ReplyDeleteI totally forgot about her being in Hairspray. DOH! Ricki had some awsome moves!
John Waters Hairspray = YES!!!!
ReplyDeleteJohn Travolta Hairspray = NO!!!!
And she was awesome as Johnny Depp's knocked-up sister in "Crybaby."
ReplyDeletelol Jason! Thanks for the laugh :)
ReplyDeleteI love Crybaby so much. You can't go wrong that opens up with Iggy Pop all nekkid in a washtub and ends with Ricki giving birth during the chicken run.
ReplyDelete@JasonBlueEyes - Right on!
ReplyDelete@Cindy - I loved Mrs. Winterbourne!
I'm not watching this season, but did Nancy Grace seriously toot on camera??
Hairspray is the only movie I know every line. My most favorite movie ever. I was horrified of the John Travolta version and his vomitous Baltimore accent.
