Martha Stewart - Not A Fan Of The Holidays

When I was reading excerpts from Alexis Stewart's book, I knew there would be some things about her mom, and I also could sense that perhaps Martha was not the most loving parent of all times, but it turns out Martha is a little bit strange too. I think the craziest part is that Martha is not a big fan of the holidays. I know right? She has magazines and books devoted to the holidays and special episodes of her show are devoted to holidays. But, Alexis says that when Alexis was a child that Martha would give Alexis her presents unwrapped and tell her to wrap them herself. Alexis also says that every Halloween, she was not allowed to dress up or wear any costume and the night consisted of staying at home with all the lights off so no one would think anyone was home and comes ask for candy. Good times.

Apparently there was never anything to eat at the house, just ingredients. Martha would always use the bathroom with the door open even when guests were at the house. She makes people take off their shoes despite the fact there is dog feces and pee on the carpet and floors. Oh, this is a good one. She told Alexis that if she ever had to marry some ugly guy for money to make sure to get pregnant with some good looking guy and to not ever have babies with the ugly guy. So, Martha is basically telling her it is ok to marry solely for money and ok to cheat. It's a good thing.

  1. Yikes. How boring was that childhood? If you want to call it that.

  2. None of this surprises me.

  3. I can imagine Martha would be no picnic to have as a mother. I have to confess though I am not terribly impressed with Alexis either. Always seemed like a bit of a whiner to me IMHO. I've listened to Whatever a few times and I feel "meh-ish" about it. It seems like Jennifer is the one to provide anything slightly amusing or insightful.

  5. Hey Alexis, way to bite the hand that feeds you.

None of this is shocking about Martha except I thought she loved Halloween. I don't care, I still love Martha's magazine. Alexis is a snoozer.

  6. You know, I kind of understand about the Christmas time. If for 6 months all you do is prepare a book, a magazine, as well as film shows about cooking and receiving people for Christmas, well screw Christmas when it's time. Get your ass in the sun, and have an un-christmasy margarita!

Hope Martha took better care of her daughter, while becoming a world known mogul. Sad book though to attack your mother like that.

  7. You know.....this is really sad, Martha must have been and probably still is a very unhappy woman.
However her first cookbook ENTERTAINING is my mom's bible for all occasions, great recipes...it's a beautiful book...I believe her ex husband was the publisher....
I recommend it, find a copy...of all her books this is the one.

  8. @MsCool

Love her Good Things section! The rest is usually a bit too complicated for me to pull off, LOL but Good Things always comes through ;>

  9. I love Martha, she's insane and owns it. I am sorry to hear Alexis' childhood wasn't magazine ready, but I'm not surprised.

If Martha would have had super success as a stockbroker, then Alexis' stories wouldn't be nearly as shocking (and she wouldn't have a book or show).

  11. Wow some great comments today,

Feisty you said it. When Martha stopped pretending to be perfect and started owning her craziness that is when I began to like her. Be true to thineself LOL

  12. Enty hasn't read the book--he is as usual just rewriting stuff from the Daily Mail. It gets old.

  13. @Krab - you can read a book excerpt online. I read the exact same excerpt he paraphrased here.

  15. I'm not sure how old Alexis is, but Martha wasn't always a homemaker with an empire - she was a high-powered stock broker for many years, wasn't she? I thought she had nannies and a stay-at-home husband and the whole nine yards....someone know more than I do, perhaps?

  16. I have to admit I love the idea that Martha Stewart has dog poop and pee in her home. Makes me feel better about myself when I've discovered our 12 year old dachshund has let loose on the floor again.

  17. I also read that when Alexis would send a letter home, from boarding school and/or camp, Martha would send her a letter back with the spelling words she misspelled, and she would have to practice and rewrite them.

On a more positive note, Alexis defends her mom to other people and has her moms back, it is one of those things where Alexis can talk smack but nobody else can about Martha.

I liked the Whatever show with both women, it was funny, and a few times Martha would call in and correct them.

  18. WOW!

What a brat, she must really hate her mom.

My mom made mistakes too, but I would never turn on her like that.

    Alexis needs to grow up.

  19. I'm not surprised about the snooty comments about having kids with a good looking guy, Martha was a model in the beginning after all.

  20. I love Martha Stewart! She has never been anything than what she is. You can't say that for most of the phonies---I'm looking at you Wretched Ray.

Alexis has always come off as a bit of a brat. She made some nasty comments about her father and his second wife. Let us not forget her own failed marriage. Those in glass houses should not throw stones.

I TOTALLY understand hating the holidays! I hate them too. I'm fine for Halloween, but Thanksgiving until New Year's is a royal pain.

  21. @RocketQueen - That sounds right to me. She was a stockbroker at some point in her life.

Well, these stories are a bit sad but I've never gotten the warm n' fuzzy maternal feeling from her.

I still respect the hell out of her for being the creative genius that she is.

  22. Actually, these descriptions of Martha Stewart make me identify with her a little more.

  23. Short of murder, Martha can do no wrong with me.

  24. i don't like the daughter. she seems to like making fun of her mom, yetthats how she makes her living; trashy and tacky.

  25. My own mother was a Martha Stewart, and she could be emotionally aloof but she was no means an icy bitch.

That said, I would never publicly discuss her (as in do an interview or publish a book}, and would cheerfully punch anyone in the throat who dared insinuate that she was a less than a perfect mother.

  26. Why does this all make sense?
