I am always suspicious when people take out life insurance policies for other people. I am extra suspicious when they take them out right before they take the person on some international trip. That Survivor producer his started a little cottage industry with his get a policy, take them to a foreign country and kill them for the money racket.
Apparently Gary Giordano did just that though for Robyn Gardner prior to them going on their Aruba vacation. You know, because Aruba is such a dangerous place. Well it is if you go with this guy.
My other question is who gets a life insurance policy for someone they have only been seeing for a few weeks. "Yeah, I know we have only been on two dates, but in case something happens to you I think we should get you a multi-million life insurance policy naming me a beneficiary. You know, just in case. We should go sky diving. Oooh, better yet, lets go do it in Nigeria. You know, really get away from it all."
F-ing creepy.
ReplyDeleteHow in the world does a man convince a woman he barely knows to go along with that? How does she not have danger radar pinging like crazy after that conversation? And how dumb is he to think he'd get away with it? Good god there are just too many dumb, greedy people in this world.
ReplyDeleteGuilty!!
ReplyDeleteGuilty!
ReplyDeleteuhm yea he is a murderer.... i guess people just need to learn to not go on vacays with people you met online like last week....so stupid!!!
ReplyDeleteShe's probably in on it.
ReplyDelete@ tempestuous Grape...great thought!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was on another site and someone mentioned that same possibility. How do we know she's not in on it and waiting for him to collect and join up with her in another country? I doubt it, with his history of anger/abuse towards women, but it is a possibility.
ReplyDeleteyea and he could have easily forged her signature or soemthing. he prob thought he could get away with it due to the shit police in aruba. usually a violent past is key and i def think he prob killed her.
ReplyDeleteGuilty.
ReplyDeleteIs it even possible to get an insurance policy on someone without them knowing? Don't they have to pass a physical? Especially for that amount.
This makes no sense to me at all. I don't understand how he could have pulled off getting a policy on her without her knowledge and consent, and I can't imagine why she would agree to such a thing. Perhaps he had the help of an accomplice who impersonated her? Did he present the idea to her as a scam they would both benefit from but then he decided to bump her off and keep all the money for himself instead? I just cannot think of a scenario that explains this.
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad this info was uncovered. He was thisclose to leaving Aruba.
ReplyDeleteInteresting theory about her being in on it. I never that of that.
C/b either way. I say do a background check on Robyn Gardner. If she's squeaky clean, then I say guilty. If there's a record of lesser criminal activity (e.g., forgery, fraud) in Robyn, then get Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist on the case pronto.
ReplyDeleteJust makes no sense. I have two sisters, and neither one of them would jump into a plane with someone they've never met for an exotic vacation. I hate to say it, but the Grape might be on point...maybe they got the idea from observing how the crackerjack Aruba police force bungled the Natalee Holloway murder and decided to capitalize on that.
*thought*
ReplyDeleteI thought insurance companies wouldn't issue life insurance policies to just anyone unless they can prove that the death of the insured would cause substantial loss, especially a non-relative. I know they have special policies for people who are partners in businesses - could this guy have lied about why he insured her? Seems like ANY lie would void the policy. And I'd sure check and make sure her signature isn't forged.
ReplyDeletewhat if he went through a company in aruba, maybe their not as strict on obtaining policies?
ReplyDeleteI heard that there are all kinds of life insurance policies, I'm guessing this one was for the length of the trip and took in all aspects of accidents plane, car, and of course mischief .....
ReplyDeleteAll and all it makes me very uneasy
The thing is, how did he ever believe he could collect that money without incriminating himself ?
Grape is on point. Having her in on it makes the most sense. It's still hella strange though. If they were conspiring to scam the insurance company, she'd have to be willing and prepared to completely disappear from her old life. Maybe she was and could be just hiding out. If that's the case, they'll find her. I think she's dead, though. Either he conned her into an insurance scam plot that didn't go the way she thought it would, or he had an accomplice who impersonated her when he took out the policy.
ReplyDeleteThis would make a good Coen Bros. noir.
I work in the insurance business. To get a policy that big there are some major hoops to jump through. Medical Tests, proof of need for that much of a policy (ex: income, debts, assets, etc) and the relationship of the beneficiary to the Insured is looked at. I would want a forensic signature examiner on that policy application. I think the violent bastard is guilty as sin.
ReplyDeleteCan you even GET an insurance policy on an 'acqaintance'?? This whole thing is fishy. I've been away for a few days so I'm guessing her body has still not been found, based on the comments.
ReplyDelete@Rocket Queen - No body.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this was a traditional life policy but travel insurance which is easy to get for another person.
ReplyDeleteI am with bluebonnetmom, I am also in the insurance industry and you have to prove insurable interest, which just means that the person getting the money has to have some sort of substantial loss from their death. Family, business partners etc. And insurance carriers are very strict about that too.
ReplyDeleteI see 1 of 2 scenarios here...
1) He falsified proof of their relationship (documentation of a business partnership) and also falsified her signature, medical exams (they can be provided to the carrier by outside parties) and she was unaware of it all.
or 2) her boyfriend was in on it along with her and Giordano and boyfriend was the original beneficiary (domestic partner). they then did a change of beneficiary to Gary and hatched this plan. Insurable interest is only really enforced when the policy is taken out.
I think you all are giving humans in general too much credit. With all due respect to the deceased, why is it so hard to believe that she might actually be THAT dumb? If there's one thing I've learned, people will never cease to surprise me with their all-around lack of common sense.
ReplyDeleteGuilty as HELL!
ReplyDeleteNo wonder he's not cooperating w/ police anymore!
ReplyDeleteGuilty!
I think the husband/boyfriend hired this guy because she was either leaving him or having an affair. This is just a little too strange not to have some sort of link to her partner.
ReplyDeleteAny man willing to dress up like a creepy jack rabbit and stand outside a woman's house with a lighter in front of his face is GUILTY.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
He just bought trip insurance for her through his AmEx card. You can get it when buying plane tickets. It's basically like the insurance they sell in vending machines in airports.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I go to the US, I always get travel insurance. I recently purchased travel insurance online through a reputable bank for my husband and me. All it asked for was the oldest persons name and date of birth. It didn't ask how many other family members were going, their names or ages, nothing. It was bizarre.
ReplyDeleteSo an alleged lawyer is ignoorant about the difference between life and travel insurance?
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much life insurance White Oprah has riding on Lilo?
ReplyDeleteThat's why you always do a background check on someone before you date them. I've used the Maryland Judiciary Case Search on the past few guys I've dated (they were clean, thank god).
ReplyDeleteCourt cases are public files and you can find them. I wish everyone knew about that. Since Gary's from Maryland, it was easy to find all of the peace orders and domestic violence cases on the MD Case Search.
I live in the town where Ms. Gardner resides - it seems the overwhelming feeling is that she, and her actual b/f, are both in on this - the three of them are just looking to cash in somehow. There's really not much sympathy for this woman. Even if this isn't a scam she was a part of, people seem to have a difficult time feeling badly for someone who puts themselves in such sketchy situations.
ReplyDeleteDid the girl never hear of GOOGLE?? She could've googled his name and city and it will show all kinds of stuff, arrests, marriages, etc... and she could've done a REAL background check.
ReplyDeleteSomeone besides the creepy guy is up to something. Either the boyfriend or the girl. No one can be that stupid after seeing what happened to Natalee.
