I've had both and loved them all, right now I have a 7 year old chow mix she has been wanting a baby so on the 23rd of this month North Shore Animal League is having an adoption day right here in Greenwich Village, and we will go and pick out a puppy or kitten for her.
I sometimes WISH my cats were like that. Instead, I've got three head-butting, belly-showing, drooling little snuggle monsters who want attention whenever they're not sleeping. Whoever says cats aren't high maintenance haven't met mine ;)
We have one of each. The cat adores me and dog adores my husband. If I could only have one it would be the cat, but then I'd have a really unhappy husband. BTW, both are rescues: dog from the side of the road and cat from our (former) backyard! Oh yeah, the cat's name is Skittle--I stole it for my CDAN postings. ;)
Rocket Queen, wish I could say the same. Whenever I go away for a few days, my three give me 8 to 12 hours of solid "screw you, lady" when I get home. They eventually come around, but they want to make sure I understand my place in the pecking order.
I love both, but I'd have to say dog. I've volunteered at animal shelters, and cats seem pretty content no matter what. They're pretty easy. With dogs, they genuinely understand when you've saved them and given them a home and they spend the rest of their lives wanting to make it up to you. Both of my boys are rescues and they are more loving and loyal than I could ever ask for.
@Pookie - initially I read your response too quickly and thought your were implying Mid-Western Soccer Mom's eat the poop. I was momentarily horrified and glad I live in the south. Then I re-read it. Love live the double take!
I'd only pick my beloved Korean street kitty, Princess Babydoll Fluffypants. Found her on the street and spent a small fortune bringing her back to the States. I miss my baby and can't wait to have enough money to bring her up to Boston.
Cat. Grew up with them. Dogs just wanna eat chunks of my bare ankles in the summertime. Which did happen once. He didn't eat it, but wrapped his mouth around it pretty good.
@Treesap - you are out of control!!! I am cracking up right now. Love the pic of your dog!!! So funny... And yes, she is a total hottie with her mohawk.
Oh - and Hayley - yes, thanks! That's where I saw him. I feel like that dog's hot factor totally overshadows any hotness Ryan Gosling has.
Also, as a New Yorker I am sort of horrified that there are people fawning all over him. New Yorkers are usually pretty good about acting like they don't give a shit. One time I was in an elevator with Colin Farrell. I was with my sister and (clueless) husband. My sister and I both stared straight ahead and acted like we didn't care. The minute he got out we both looked at each other and mouthed "Oh my God" like seven times.
I'm a dog person. I've never really understood 'cat love', but I can respect it.
I have a French Bulldog named Monsieur Milo. Upon reflection, he's quite cat-like, as he's more interested in being pleased that in pleasing his owners.
I love and adore both, and had both all the time I was growing up, but I think I'd have to say cat. I like that they're "eff you" all the time. I have two cats now (Darcy and Rochester) and one dog at the moment (Manderly, a chiweenie), and while I love them all madly, Manderly can be a little too clingy sometimes. That's why tomorrow I'm adopting a pomeranian they are holding for me at the pound. I'm hoping having a friend & partner in crime will distract her from me every once in a while. She's totally adorable, but I literally can't go anywhere in the house without her -- including the bathroom. The cats? They could not give less of a shit.
You have to clean up after dogs, but they'll bark if a burglar comes in the yard. Cats just need a litter box, but may lick the dishes in the sink if unattended.
Hmmm. . .may I choose a fish? Fish tanks are pretty!
Rocket, at least I'm not the only one! I can't remember the last time I went to the bathroom or took a shower without an audience! If it's not the dog, it's the cats. They all LOVE the bathroom, for some reason. Weirdos. ... and, Darcy just jumped up on the desk and is debating about whether or not to march across the keyboard, as she is wont to do. Sigh.
I'm allergic to both so I can't have either. But if I had to choose it would be a dog since cats love to torture and kill small things (birds, lizards, rodents) for no reason.
Both are awesome so I can't choose. I had cats for most of my life but right now I have two dogs and I could not imagine my life without them. Both are rescues and both are Pomeranians (Welcome to the club Texshan!).
I have 3 dogs and 2 cats, and while I love my dogs (shipped 2 of them over here from the US, got the 3rd here), I'd have to pick cats. My cat Loki loves to be held on his back like a baby and have his stomach rubbed. Sweetest rescue cat ever, he knows he was saved, and shows his gratitude for it every day.
I love dogs. I am not a cat hater. I like cats but dogs are my favorite. I have 2 adopted beagles. They are needy but also they are the most loveable clowns around.
I love both but over the years I really have come to appreciate that cats are usually more low maintenance. Well that was until I adopted my orange tabby Jupiter ;>. Very, very needy. One night my husband was observing him meow like crazy and he said "Congratulations...you now have a needy cat and a needy husband" LOL.
I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. Once my dogs have gone to heaven, that's it. No more dogs. I love that my cats are so independent and much less work. They don't bark or require walks.
Cat. Tough call for me, because I love both, but I need low maintenance pets. I have three kids close in age and have no extra time to take care of a dog.
Chickens are also low maintenance, for anyone who wants their pets to make 'em breakfast. :) (I have 23!)
@iheartjacksparrow -- "cats love to torture and kill small things (birds, lizards, rodents) for no reason"
Oh, there's a reason. It's called "instinct." ;-)
And my Grandpa's German Shepherd would be deeply offended to hear you insinuate that the average cat is a better killer -- that dog could chase and drag down a deer like WHOA.
I love both, but I prefer having cats. They're much lower maintenance than dogs are. The only way I would prefer a dog over a cat is if I lived somewhere that I worried about my safety. Loyal dogs can be very handy when strangers come snooping around.
lol Ida. I was going to respond to iheartjacksparrow: "So do humans. Take a look at factory farms."
I'm beginning to realize my cats are incredibly high maintenance compared to everyone else's! Mine come when they're called, crave affection and hate being alone!
Having lived with dogs and cats, I appreciate the positive and negative aspects of each species. I have a dog that's the size of a cat, so I'll stick with her for now. Wanna see something silly? Go to Youtube and watch Norma Tanega singing "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog."
Dogs! Where are you going to find a cat that will. When dinner guests arrive, leave her puppies the day they were born to lie under your only child's crib. Then she proceeds to keep everyone but you and your spouse out of the baby's room.
I was the baby in the crib and that is why I will always be a dog person.
I love and own both, but dogs. Even as my sweet kitty and pup sleep beside me while I'm reading this. I'm sure I'll always own both, though, so glad I don't really have to choose in real life. :)
I love both, but it's cats all the way for me. On June 30 I had to let my 15 y/o baby girl go....her vet thinks it was a brain tumor. When I'm ready, it will be another cat that comes to live with us.
At this point in my life, cat. My cat is the bomb, and he's low maintenance. I have to spend 5 minutes a day cleaning the litter, filling the food and water dishes, dispensing treats and rotating the toys. He does his own thing, curls up near my feet at night, and provides me with the perfect amount of attention. Dogs are great, but dogs are WORK. I don't have the space or the schedule to accommodate a dog right now.
i have both, i prefer the cat. less needy.
ReplyDeletecat - I would hate making arrangements for someone to check on my dog every time I left the house for more than 6 hours.
ReplyDeleteDog.
ReplyDeleteNow I'll get technical. If I had to pick a living dog, I would pick Ryan Gosling's dog (sans mohawk). That dog is a total hottie.
If I could pick a dead dog, of course I would pick the love of my life, Henry.
cats all day.
ReplyDeleteCat
ReplyDeletedog! I miss you Mr. Lee. RIP
ReplyDeleteDOG.....sorry but only p*ssy in my house is mine....lol
ReplyDeleteCats.
ReplyDeleteDogs are like mid-western soccer moms, cats are like New Yorkers. I prefer my disdain from my pets straight up.
I've had both and loved them all, right now I have a 7 year old chow mix she has been wanting a baby so on the 23rd of this month North Shore Animal League is having an adoption day right here in Greenwich Village, and we will go and pick out a puppy or kitten for her.
ReplyDeletelol Green Sea Anemone!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes WISH my cats were like that. Instead, I've got three head-butting, belly-showing, drooling little snuggle monsters who want attention whenever they're not sleeping. Whoever says cats aren't high maintenance haven't met mine ;)
Good for you MISCH-- way to promote adoption :)
ReplyDeleteDepends on the day... Love my dogs (lab-mix and pit-mix)if I'm feeling active. Prefer one of my cats when I'm feeling mellow!
ReplyDeletehee, Green Sea Anemone! #truth.
ReplyDeleteand omg, i'd never thought about it...but dogs ARE like mid-western soccer moms...minus the poop-eating, of course.
that said, cats. all day, everyday.
We have one of each. The cat adores me and dog adores my husband. If I could only have one it would be the cat, but then I'd have a really unhappy husband.
ReplyDeleteBTW, both are rescues: dog from the side of the road and cat from our (former) backyard!
Oh yeah, the cat's name is Skittle--I stole it for my CDAN postings. ;)
Dogs absolutely! Mine goes to work with me everyday.
ReplyDeletePlus, I'm allergic to cats.
I like both, but if I had to pick, it would be all dog, all the time.
ReplyDeleteand perhaps in a freudian moment, I accidentally typed "all dong, all the time" but caught it before I clicked publish. ha ha.
Rocket Queen, wish I could say the same. Whenever I go away for a few days, my three give me 8 to 12 hours of solid "screw you, lady" when I get home. They eventually come around, but they want to make sure I understand my place in the pecking order.
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely no doubt in my mind: Dog...already have two and would never have a cat unless it needed me and I had to.
ReplyDeleteI love both, but I'd have to say dog. I've volunteered at animal shelters, and cats seem pretty content no matter what. They're pretty easy. ReplyDeleteDOG!!!!

ReplyDeletehee! @ BigMomma. i do that too. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love all animals but I've made my choice - cats. I yearn for a collie like I had growing up, though.
ReplyDelete@KLM, Hahah, Ryan Gosling's dog inspired me to give my dog a mohawk:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/mcbohl/5940491825/in/photostream
I hate to choose, but my dog is my co-pilot so I guess dogs over cats. Plus, the reason I love my cat so much is that he's more of a dog than cat.
Neither. I do prefer cats though, if I must choose. They mind their own business.
ReplyDeleteI'd only pick my beloved Korean street kitty, Princess Babydoll Fluffypants. Found her on the street and spent a small fortune bringing her back to the States. I miss my baby and can't wait to have enough money to bring her up to Boston.
ReplyDeleteLove them both because I love animals, but I am a Crazy Cat Lady all the way. Hi Sheldon, hi Skylar! (See? Crazy Cat Lady. Told you.)
ReplyDeleteLOL
DOG!! I have had cats since I was 19 and nothing changed my life like getting a dog. My little guy Pepe is the light of my life!
ReplyDeleteKLM- Dlisted's got pictures of Ryan Gosling and his goofy dog today!
ReplyDeleteDog.
ReplyDeletecan't pick. I love all animals and would have a menagerie if possible.
ReplyDelete@rocket queen. My cats ate super affectionate bd want to be held 23 hours a.day. Get a siamese, best cats ever people
ReplyDeleteCat. Grew up with them. Dogs just wanna eat chunks of my bare ankles in the summertime. Which did happen once. He didn't eat it, but wrapped his mouth around it pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Ms. Snarky and go with dong, all day, everyday.
ReplyDelete@Treesap - you are out of control!!! I am cracking up right now. Love the pic of your dog!!! So funny... And yes, she is a total hottie with her mohawk.
ReplyDeleteOh - and Hayley - yes, thanks! That's where I saw him. I feel like that dog's hot factor totally overshadows any hotness Ryan Gosling has.

I have both, but the cats are my babies.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I totally believe that 'dogs have owners, cats have staff'
Dog
ReplyDeleteI'm a dog person. I've never really understood 'cat love', but I can respect it.
ReplyDeleteI have a French Bulldog named Monsieur Milo. Upon reflection, he's quite cat-like, as he's more interested in being pleased that in pleasing his owners.
cat. cat. cat. cat. nothing in the least against dogs, but cat. cat. cat.
ReplyDeletethere is nothing like the love you share with a good dog. absolutely nothing.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCats, because they fit my lifestyle. I like to travel too much to own a dog.
ReplyDeleteI had to put my cat to sleep a few months ago (he was 20 1/2 years old), and miss him so much. :(
I love and adore both, and had both all the time I was growing up, but I think I'd have to say cat. I like that they're "eff you" all the time. ReplyDeleteI love ALL non-human animals (except cave crickets), but I just *get* cats better than I do dogs.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I understand felines better than I do my own species.
Dog the size of a small cat! Snuggles...
ReplyDelete@atlchica -- sorry for the loss of your baby. :-( 20 years is a DAMN good run, though. You obviously did lots of things exactly right.
ReplyDeleteYou have to clean up after dogs, but they'll bark if a burglar comes in the yard. Cats just need a litter box, but may lick the dishes in the sink if unattended.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. . .may I choose a fish? Fish tanks are pretty!
DOGS!!!!! I love dogs!!! They are you best friend without the drama!!!
ReplyDeletelol Texshan - my cats follow me into the bathroom too...am damn near all over the house. Constantly underfoot the gorgeous little rascals!
ReplyDeleteMy cat sleeps under the blanket next to my stomach or against my back in the winter time.
ReplyDeleteRocket, at least I'm not the only one! I can't remember the last time I went to the bathroom or took a shower without an audience! If it's not the dog, it's the cats. They all LOVE the bathroom, for some reason. Weirdos.

Cat. Always have, although in my older years I have grown fonder of dogs.
ReplyDeleteI am wanting a pug more and more.
Cats can just take care of themselves more than dogs can.
I'm allergic to both so I can't have either. But if I had to choose it would be a dog since cats love to torture and kill small things (birds, lizards, rodents) for no reason.
ReplyDeleteBoth are awesome so I can't choose. I had cats for most of my life but right now I have two dogs and I could not imagine my life without them. Both are rescues and both are Pomeranians (Welcome to the club Texshan!).
ReplyDeleteGood to see so many animal lovers on CDAN!
I have five cats...enough said.
ReplyDeleteThough I'd have a dog, too, if truth be told...

ReplyDeleteCat. Tough call for me, because I love both, but I need low maintenance pets. I have three kids close in age and have no extra time to take care of a dog.

dog
ReplyDeleteIda, my dog has taken out 29 squirrels. I am beyond proud of her. Damned tree rats.
ReplyDeleteCats! Dogs are way too needy.
ReplyDeletefor which meal? kidding. I'm one date away from my fourth cat.
ReplyDeleteCats. Absofuckinglutely cats.
ReplyDeleteAnd I wonder how/why anyone could possibly think differently.
I love and own both, but dogs. Even as my sweet kitty and pup sleep beside me while I'm reading this. I'm sure I'll always own both, though, so glad I don't really have to choose in real life. :)
ReplyDeleteRocketQueen, head butting is a good thing! That means your cat loves you!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love both, but I think I'd pick cats. They make better pillows :D
I love both, but it's cats all the way for me. On June 30 I had to let my 15 y/o baby girl go....her vet thinks it was a brain tumor. When I'm ready, it will be another cat that comes to live with us.
ReplyDeleteCan't pick at all. I just don't deal with feces. It's nothing personal, just a general thing. Health and welfare you know.
ReplyDeleteI have 3 cats and 2 dogs. I love that the cats are independent, but I am waaaay too attached to my dogs..
ReplyDeleteAt this point in my life, cat. My cat is the bomb, and he's low maintenance.
