Real Life Golden Girls
Someone needs to get Betty White on the phone and get her thoughts on this proposed project, but to me it is sacrilege. Heresy. Shaming the name of Golden Girls which is one of the finest shows to ever enter the annals of television. Had to make sure I spelled annals right or this post could have turned into something entirely different.

The Producers of "The Amazing Race" are looking for stylish women ages 55-90, to join the cast of a docu-series that follows the privileged lives of California's high society women. We are looking to document the lives of a group of social butterflies that have lived a life filled with only the best. It seems for years television has forgotten the over 50 crowd, assuming they don't have what it takes to attract viewers. The time has come to welcome America's most important senior ladies to the screen and prove that life only gets better with age. If you represent someone who is ready to celebrate being mature, wealthy, and full of energy, televisions 7 time emmy award winning producer wants to highlight their life.
To me it sounds like it is going to be a Real Housewives thing. They do not want to celebrate the lives of older women. Do you really think someone can go in and sell something like that? What they want is a senior version of Real Housewives. I am sure they would love some women in their 50's and 60's who are dating a bunch of guys in their 30's.
Maybe I would be more receptive if they would change the name. You know how they retire numbers in sports? I think they should retire the name Golden Girls and never let it be used again.
NOOOOOOO. Not my beloved GG's!!!
ReplyDeleteJust proves to me reality TV is starting to lose steam. (At least I hope it is)
ReplyDeleteGrasping for ideas.
Oh well but maybe because I never really liked the golden girls? It will interesting to see what its like. For at least one episode anyway.
ReplyDeleteOh and Happy Canada day to all the Canadian readers.
*pffffft*
ReplyDeleteI'd be FAR more offended if they tried to replicate/redo the actual sitcom. This is just another shitty reality show, so la de da.
I wish they could be sued for using the name, though.
Oh God Please No.
ReplyDeleteI would think that if they want it more realistic they should look for women who go to the beauty shop every week to have the blue hair set (Hi Mom!), wear robes with snaps and babushkas.
ReplyDeleteyou know that gawd awful Candy Spelling is going to be first in line

ReplyDeleteThis isn't Golden Girls, this is Real Senior Housewives of So Cal. Reminds me of the day about a decade ago when I passed a shiny Jaguar on the Santa Monica Freeway since it was going barely 55 in the slow lane. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a coral orange smudge, a pink circle, and a blue stripe, topped off by a cotton ball. I actually slowed down so that I could get a better view in my mirror and realized I was looking at an elderly rich lady wearing the same makeup she'd been taught to wear in 1971. Made me chuckle.
ReplyDeleteI have no interest in watching society types argue in scripted situations. I don't watch any of the Real Housewives series now, these 'reality' shows are so fake now its unbearable.
Watch Betty White in Hot in Cleveland, much more entertaining than this crap will be. : )

ReplyDeleteBea, Rue and Estelle are turning in their graves.....Oh well I guess they can get Candy Spelling, Barbara Davis, Kate Capshaw Spielberg and Jackie Collins, I am sure they have nothing better to do then count their money and shop
ReplyDeleteNo doubt headed for TVLand, like their knock-off of Top Model that was all older women.
ReplyDeleteThis sucks. Reality TV is killing TV. You are forced to have cable now since all regular networks have are shit reality shows now. I know there are a lot on cable too but at least you still have reruns of Law&Order shows to choose from. As long as you avoid E which should just change it's name to K since it's all KardASSians all the time, and Bravo an TLC you get a few choices of scripted shows with actual actors.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that really gets me (you know, aside from the obvious objections) is that this wasn't what the original show was about at all. Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia were not "high society" women who have lived with "only the best." They were average senior citizens dealing with the problems facing most older people in a relatable way. (Although, I did question why their roof always needed fixing.)
ReplyDeleteI hope they can get them on a trademark charge so at least they won't use the same name.
Reality shows are more and more about confrontation rather than genuine "reality". We watch reality shows like Pawn Stars, American Pickers, stuff like that. You know, little confrontation, some education value and pleasant people. Ok, I do like Storage Wars, but the confrontation on that show is minimal. The ones with confrontation I just don't watch. Wish people like Auction Hunters, Hardcore Pawn, stuff like that would minimize the confrontation (especially with the series regulars) and focus more on what actually happens. You might actually attract viewers.
ReplyDelete"I am sure they would love some women in their 50's and 60's who are dating a bunch of guys in their 30's." Isn't that Sonja's role?
ReplyDelete"They do not want to celebrate the lives of older women. Do you really think someone can go in and sell something like that?"
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion would be that someone better start trying, pretty soon this demographic is just going to get bigger and bigger.
I can't see anything good coming out of a series like this. It's hard enough to watch younger women be catty and bitchy.
ReplyDeleteYou've all expressed exactly what my feelings are on the subject so i thought I'd add that:
ReplyDeleteI miss Bea Arther something awful dammit!
Wasn't there already a reality show like this last year? It followed a bunch of senior citizens and it was called Sunset something. I didn't watch it so I don't know what the exact premise was.
ReplyDeleteThe Golden Girls all lived together because they were not wealthy. What exactly do rich elderly women in Southern California have in common with that? Just more proof TV execs are out of touch.
ReplyDelete@Rose - YES! I was coming on to say that. I saw it featured on Rachael Ray and actually watched a few episodes b/c I thought one of the ladies was so cute but it was SUPER boring. Sunset Daze was the name. It was filmed in an Arizona retirement community.
ReplyDeleteREALLY they think 55 is old???
ReplyDeleteI'd TOTALLY watch that! I try not to jump to conclusions before I actually experience something, and I really MISS older people... But then, I'm counting down the days till Big Brother, so that's where I'm coming from :)
