Another Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie
North America's interest in the Pirates franchise is starting to sag more than Kim Kardashian 's butt in ten years. The thing is, the rest of the world loves these movies so they are going to keep churning them out and are willing to pay Johnny Depp a fortune to do so. Most people would have quit the franchise by now, but Johnny is perfectly happy getting that $50M a movie and is expected to sign on to the next one and will earn even more. The latest movie is actually the third highest grossing movie of all time even though it was the worst performing one in North America. Only Avatar and Titanic have beat it. Are you getting tired of them yet?
Yup. No interest in #4. I liked how the trilogy ended. Enough for me.
ReplyDeleteActually, I only saw the first one. Someday I may get around to watching the second. I'm not in any hurry.
ReplyDeleteWow. Human beings TRULY have shittacular taste.
ReplyDeletePlease, no more.
ReplyDeleteThe only good thing about the last one was the cameo from Judi Dench!
I can't believe I actually respect Orlando & Keira for not taking a big paycheck and doing a 4th.
ReplyDeleteJohnny has a huge lifestyle to support now. He put in his time in the indie world I guess he has a right to cash in. He is still goooorgeous for almost 50.
sorry but I can't say I blame him...it isn't like he was ever after an oscar. he has always marched to his own drummer
ReplyDeleteI saw the newest one at the Drive-Ins here in Baltimore and I fell asleep, which NEVER happens. The first 20 minutes kicked ass and then it got really dumb, storyline everything.
ReplyDeleteLove the first 2.
Saw the first one, enjoyed it. Saw the second one, enjoyed it less. Done.
ReplyDeleteI just wish he'd ditch the pirate bullshit AND the gothic Tim Burton collaborations and do more films like Finding Neverland. That movie destroyed me, and I loved every single second of it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't think he's *after* an Oscar, but I totally predict he'll win one.
...but he probably won't win any big awards for the Pirates crap. I feel as if I should clarify that statement. :-)
ReplyDeleteActually they are working on the 5th one then.... not the 4th. The 4th is what i JUST saw and it was a snoozefest.
ReplyDeleteThe Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Dead Man's Chest (2006)
At World's End (2007)
On Stranger Tides (2011)
After the first, I bailed.
ReplyDeleteThe fourth wasn't that bad but thats only because I judged it against the third (which really jumped the shark).
ReplyDeleteI did not see the latest one, but probably will on Netflixs when it comes out. I did not "love" any of them. Johnny needs to remember he is a great actor and stopping going commercial.
ReplyDeleteEh, all actors go after these popcorn franchises when they have the chance. It's easy money. Johnny ranks in around $20M upfront and I bet he's getting back end points. Throwing in licensing his likeness for merchandising, and Johnny is swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck. I'm sure he'll go back to smaller films in a few years, once international movie goers get tired of PoTC.
ReplyDeleteThey're not particularly good movies (only saw the first), but I am all for Johnny getting his payday. He deserves it. The man has to fly back and forth to France, for goodness sake. Let him fund his 401k before he goes back to the indie films.
ReplyDeleteI'm with RocketQueen. Liked the first. The second one was meh. Couldn't believe they made the third and so on and so forth. I think I might appreciate them more if I had kids...I don't know...?
ReplyDeleteI suppose I can't blame Johnny Depp if he's getting paid that much but at some point, he has to realize how ridiculous it is, right??
I love Johnny, but enough already.
ReplyDeleteI hate these movies. I saw the first one and that was it. He also gets a huge chunk of Box Office gross and Jack Sparrow toys. He makes over $120 million from just ONE of these movies.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the next one can have gold-toothed Charlie Sheen as Johnny's crazy pirate brother. Just to liven this dead franchise up.
don't get me wrong, he is totally deserving of an oscar and probably should and will get one. I just don't think he gives a shit.
ReplyDeleteI think JasonBlueEyes suggestion of Charlie Sheen as his crazy pirate brother is a hilarious idea!
ReplyDeleteI love the movies and enjoy watching Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, love their piratey chemistry! I read somewhere that as long as his kids enjoy him playing Captain Jack he will keep playing him. I would love to see them do the movie until the pirate characters old age, I'm curious to see if it goes that way, they have been leading to the conflict of the pirates life vs. the modern world, maybe it will be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI was tired of them before they even started. I am actually a Depp fan but man that whole pirate shtick really bums me out. I love the Burton collaborations. I have to admit that I've never seen a whole pirate movie, but Jack Sparrow makes me want to off myself, so I think it is better for my own sanity to avoid them like the plague.
ReplyDeletepersonally, I like the ride better.
ReplyDelete@timebob - that's what she said. ;)
ReplyDeleteNever saw any of them though I sure love Johnny and think why not ca$h in, there are worse ways to make money. I too also think one day he'll get the Oscar cuz I think he's that good.
ReplyDeleteI was over them after the first one but my 8-year-old son loves them.
ReplyDeleteNot ashamed to go against the grain and say I love the movies. Johnny Depp could release a full-length feature film of him making farting noises and I'm on it.
ReplyDeleteHe's a SELLOUT!
ReplyDeleteJohnny -- RIDE that Gravy train for everything that it's worth!!
ReplyDeleteHe has nothing to prove to anyone anymore. Everyone knows he is the most talented actor of his generation. Oscar or no Oscar.
He says as long as his children want him to keep making the PoTC movies, he will do so. Good for him. He deserves every penny ! Love me some Johnny Much?? LOL
I like these movies but I really like Depp and Keith Richards so while they certainly don't make me think, they entertain me. I'll bet they are a blast to make!!! Heck, I'd 20 of them if they paid me!! What fun!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't care how many of these he does ....the man funded a young girl who needed cancer treatment. If that BIG check pays for acts of kindness like that I don't care if JD does Pirates of the Carib...the legend of the Geriatric Jolly Roger.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm waiting for he and TB's version of Dark Shadowws.
I love the Charlie Sheen idea. I haven't seen the newest Pirates movie, but I have seen the others multiple times. They are mindless fun for me.
ReplyDeleteOnly saw the 1st one...
ReplyDeleteNot to sound like some sorta elitist snob bitch BUT this sorta fuckery is the reason why foreign films are usually SOOO much better.
I remember seeing Amelie for the first time (my first real grown up foreign film)and I cried and was so moved by every little detail they captured.
To me the Pirates movies and the franchise is basically like Transformers...its bananas that the USA is so known for our big hollywood movies that have little context, are emotionally vapid, and weighted down by all sorts of sexism, genderbiased, and racism. bleck.
I will say though that independent American movies can still be great.
Bring on POTC 5! And 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 .....I love Jack Sparrow, and I love the movies.
ReplyDeleteI love every movie Johnny Depp does.
ReplyDeleteJohnny can make whatever he wants. I don't begrudge him the $, I don't think he's a sellout, and he should have a nice payday after all the hard work he's put in doing the serious indie flicks. Unfortunately, great small movies don't pay very well.
ReplyDeleteI like the pirate movies. The last one was really fun with the crazy mermaids.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep watching them. :D
2 and 3 were terrible, I didn't even bother with 4.
ReplyDeleteEh, I loved the first, endured the second, thought the third took itself too seriously (though I loved Johnny's nose entrance!), and thought the 4th was fun as long as you didn't want anything to think about. Not so enthusiastic about a fifth one.
