Sister Wives

I don't know why or how it happened, but TLC sucked me into their damn Sister Wives marathon yesterday. The thing is once you watch them once, you can develop some great drinking games from them (everytime they mention how many days left in the vacation home; everytime they mention how stressed they are). I don't know if you watched the marathon yesterday or watched the shows during their regular run, but I have never seen so much manufactured drama in all my life. They made it seem like they were running for their lives and were in danger and blah blah blah just because the police might decide they are polygamists. I think they wanted us to feel the persecution, but it was tough when they were all getting away to their vacation cabin, have enough money to abandon a home they own and move to a new city with no apparent source of income. Oh yeah, they get money from TLC.

My feeling is that if all four families continue to live apart that they will all break up which is really bad for all the kids, but is totally on the adults who just had to flee. No, what they had to do was try and make things interesting so they could get another season out of the show.

  2. I got sucked in, too, but I came away thinking, "Why is their city/county spending so much money prosecuting these people?" I guess there's no REAL crime there.

  3. Kody with a K is a selfish prick who gets off on being the Leader of his fucked up clan of delusional wives.

I feel bad for those kids, their lives are being turned upside down and ruined so this famewhore could get his 5 mins in the sun from TLC.

I want the first wife to leave his dumb ass and keep a bunch of them kids. She seems to be the only "normal" one of the bunch who has a hard time buying any of his shit.

  4. I hated myself for getting sucked into one of their marathons too, but haven't watch much of this current season. I thought Kody's first wife is the one who introduced him to "wife" #4...and with 1st wife's only child almost being 18 I wonder if her plan is to bail as soon as that happens. Just the feeling I get...

  9. I'd rather be forced to watch a single episode of Sarah Palin's Alaska than watch these morons. And that's pain.

  10. I've watched an episode or two but he just creeps me out. I have no problem with the idea of polygamy between consenting adults, but it must be hard to keep it un-complicated, and even more so if there are cameras there all the time. I do think drama is being created because really, they could just lead a normal family life (with four wives) but nobody would watch that show now, would they?

  11. That guy must have a dick like a magic wand.

I would pack my shit, punch a guy in the throat and leave before I would share him with another woman, let alone three. Have some self-respect, ladies!

I might have tuned in if I had known it was on. Sometimes I really love reveling in crap TV.

@ Jax for the win. My thoughts exactly.

  13. Polygamy between consenting adults, fine...but there is NO NEED to have so many goddamned kids. Seriously.

People need to stop breeding for a while and realize that the perpetuation of their genetic material is really not as important as they think it is.

  14. @Majik -- I'm in love with your comment -- particularly the last sentence. SO. EFFING. TRUE.

  15. Anyone else get the feeling that wife #4 is to make up for the obesity of wives #2 & #3?

  16. I've watched a couple of episodes, and I found myself weirdly drawn into it.
They keep saying this "lifestyle" makes them better people according to their religion. To be fair, they all seem like pretty decent people and close-knit, but it's hard to be sympathetic about their legal troubles considering they have a reality show about it.

  17. @CrystalRope,

That made my day. So funny and so true.

    True!

  19. Agree w/most everyone. Polygamy btwn consenting adults, no problem. The problem? dragging 16+ kids into the whole thing. The kids don't need to be running from the cops or keeping secrets for the adults. Unfortunately, this cult, religion, whatever you want to call it preaches about re-populating the earth with those who hold their particular brand of beliefs. Total bullshit. Use some birth control.

  20. Hello, my name is Jasmine, and I am addicted Sister Wives.
    *waves hello*

I gotta tell ya I dont agree with ANY of their beliefs but I am totally into it because I feel like under the 'normalcy' they are trying to convey there lies a whole torrent of JERRY SPRINGER DRAMA! I mean, think about it. You KNOW Kody (that K he uses to spell his name is SO fucking lame btw) is totally NOT banging wife #2 and #3 proably is like milk toast in the sack, so I wonder if wife #4, with her so obvious insecure desperation, is his naughty wife.
See, when you make it about sex any show can become awesome.

Except Jon and Kate plus 8. I refuse to watch that shit. Same with Jersey Shore. Bleck

  22. Most men I know say they have enough dealing with 1 wife let along more than 1. He must have a gigantic ego poor thing.

  23. To each his/her own, but this particular family is so goddamn irritating! The women have no effin backbone!:

"Kody looks so stressed, Kody seems to be relaxed, Kody seemed pleased, Kody likes the furniture this way" Gahhhhhh!

I do agree Kody's collection is more about ego than religion & wife #4 seems to be jonesing an escape route, or a huge blowup (either one would be great to see).

Notice how irked Kody looked when the wives were so excited about living in their own homes & suggested they stay that way? The look on his face was very telling about where his intentions really are. Dick.

  24. I love to hate Kody. I actually like wives #1 thru #3.

My big problem with this family's polygamy is that Kody is just so appalled at the idea of a woman having more than one husband.

  25. I've watched every episode of the first season as a science experiment. I wanted to know what about this goofy tool of a man that made 4 intelligent, educated attractive (plus size or not, they're beautiful) women willing to share him. He's a turd! In doing so, I would also understand how ladies men, bad boys and playboys pull it off.
    1) He looks each woman in the eye as if she is the only person in the world, the most beautiful woman in the world, lovingly telling them with his eyes that if he didn't have to run off with another wife, there is nothing he would like more in the world than to stare into her eyes and make love to her for hours on end.
2)When they talk, he actively listens. He looks at them, lets them completely finish without interruption, and repeats back what they've said to prove hes been listening and to confirm he understands.
    3) He makes sure each of them knows hes thinking about them, even if he is off banging one of the other ones or courting wife five, he spends a few minutes on the phone with each of them.
    4) He loves his children. Really what more do mothers want than a man who loves their children as much as they do?
5)They were raised this way. While the Morman church officially (forcibly) renounced polygamy (twice actually)they never really completely gave it up. Mormans still believe that once they reach heaven they will again be polygamists, which is Gods will.
There are still huge numbers of polygamists living normal lives in Utah and the states surrounding Utah. The sects that you read about only a portion, the rest are working, functioning, normal dressing families. They continue to follow a faith that was written for them by Joseph Smith in 1831. In most cases, following the "principle" has failed not for the obvious reasons but because the Profits, who believe they speak directly with God, continually abuse their power and wind up taking away the human rights of their followers.
For the people who follow these beliefs and remain in society it can work. There are benefits to having sister wives. Sometimes I wish someone would take my husband off my hands for a few days.

  26. Every time I try to watch this show I end up turning it off. The way he stares at each of the wives is just weird. I love to get sucked into some trashy TV (hello, Housewives!), but the way they interact with each other on this show just makes me a little uncomfortable. The wives hang on to every word he says as if they are competing amongst themselves for the "most attentive" title, and while the wives do seem to enjoy each other's company at times, I can't help but get the vibe that they are all jealous of each other. The first three were truly pissed when he decided to marry wife #4 and they started to gang up on her before she even moved in. I also can't get past the fact that #2 was married to #1's brother first. Weird.

  27. I've never watched this show and wouldn't want to live this type of life. The thing I don't understand is why they are in trouble with the law. He is only legally married to wife #1. The others are "spiritual" marriages. If they aren't getting public assistance, I don't see it as a legal problem.

  28. @Anotheramy - I definitely noticed a few of those things, too. Very clever man ;)

  29. He puts me in mind of the youth minister at some creepy "community church" -- metrosexual clothes, soul patch, overly styled hair, basically everything the guy who writes StuffChristiansLike.com pokes fun at.http://www.jonacuff.com/stuffchristianslike/2008/06/269-understanding-how-metrosexual-your-worship-leader-is-a-handy-guide)

    Bleccch.
