Bono Hitchhikes - Gives Free Passes

Earlier this week Bono was in West Vancouver when he decided to take a little walk with his assistant. The next thing you know it started to rain and Bono decided to thumb a ride back to where he was staying. Before you say that hitchhiking is dangerous, you need to know that the last crime that was committed in West Vancouver was probably the police throwing some guy out of town for making less than $1M a year.

As Bono put out his thumb, Gilbert Brule of the Edmonton Oilers happened to drive by with his girlfriend and dog and picked the pair up. The girlfriend did not want to stop, but Gilbert said it was Bono so they stopped. In return for their hospitality, Bono gave them free passes for the next night's show in Edmonton. He also mentioned them during the concert. So, it was nice of Bono to give them the passes, but the couple did have to take and pay for a two hour flight to go see the concert, so not exactly free.

  1. OMG, that comment about West Vancouver was GOLD. And not that far off. North and West Van police are known for checking the license plates of everyone driving around and arresting people for almost NOTHING (especially if they don't LIVE in North or West Van) to get them into the system - it's a crazy deterrent to crime in their municipalities.

  2. Not exactly free, but he's a hockey player so he can afford the flight ;)

    STAGED. PR. STUNT.

The guy just happened to be a pro hockey player?

    Don't believe it.

    Sorry to be so cynical.

  5. So someone who could afford U2 tickets and the flight to get there in the first place, got free tickets?

    Um...yay?

  6. Well he sold his tickets to VANC/BOSTON Game 1 so guessing he made enough to pay for a flight to Edmonton ;)

  7. could afford the flight. he's a professional hockey player. and hes, he did sell his game one tix to go. i'm sure of bono was picked up by someone 'average' he would have included the flight.

  8. There's something fishy about this story.

  9. it was actually the gf who recognized Bono and Gilbert didn't want to stop. He actually drove past and his gf convinced him to turn around.

i love that this is what is on the news in my country. It's not all CNN "extreme violence" or "extreme weather" kinda reports. ever notice that? it's like CNN trademarked the word "extreme", lol

  11. While it seems to far fetched to be true, it actually is.

I'm from Edmonton, and Gilbert does play here. He was actually in Van for the hockey game, but when Bono offered him the backstage passes, he sold his hockey tickets, and booked it home.

It's just a case of being in the right place at the right time...oh and be willing to pick up a hitchhiker!

@ MommaBear, that is exactly what I have read as well. Bono and his assistant where sitting in the back seat with the couple's dog! Love it.

  13. Wait, wait. He SOLD his tickets? Really? That's a classy guy. I have a Blue Jays flex pack and have never sold my tickets when I can't go, and I'm no rich NHL player.

This really isn't sittng well with me.

  14. OK. I thought the Vancouver area had a serial killer of women not all that long ago.

I could have my stories confused but I thought I remembered this.

  16. @Jeri - that was in Vancouver. Actually, it was a guy who was kidnapping prostitutes in downtown Vancouver then taking them to his farm in Port Coquitlam (quite far away), then killing and burying them there.
This is WEST VANCOUVER - a hoity-toity suburb a bridge and park away from Vancouver. There's a postal code in West Van that is the richest in all of Canada.

  17. PS - and they have their OWN police force. None of that generic RCMP for them.

  19. They were able to spot Bono in the rain while driving?? Those are some good eyes. I'm be the dummy that would maybe think "That looks like Bono" but keep on driving.

Of course he took the tickets and went. It's freaking BONO! Last time I tried to get U2 tickets they were $250 a pop so when the lead singer pays your way, you can bet I would have gone.

  20. Word is Bono & his "Assistant" were out hiking, anyhow this is so much of a coincidence, don't you think it just happens an EDMONTON OILER hockey player was out there and picked up a rock star "Hitchhiking" and gave him Free tix and backstage pass to U2 EDMONTON Concert.
Also It's been reported Bono was not wearing his trademark shades at the time.
    Hmmmm............

  21. They are playing in Seattle tonight. You can hear them playing clearly for several blocks, a lot of people just hanging out in the street enjoying the music. I'm not a U2 fan, but it was a cool thing to see so many people that happy

  22. I buy it. Didn't George Clooney and Brad Pitt hitchhike across New Jersey or something to make it to an Oceans premier?
