How many surgeries are done each year on the knees of people? It must be in the hundreds of thousands. I don't remember ever hearing about anyone dying from knee surgery. However, Mia Amber Davis died from routine knee surgery. She was having the surgery to correct a college basketball injury and her husband said she spoke to him and that everything was good. After the surgery she started to experience dizziness and the next thing you know she died.
Mia Amber Davis had a scene stealing moment in the movie Road Trip and worked steadily as a model. Has anyone ever heard of someone dying from knee surgery? Is it a reaction to the anesthesia?
Blood clots are big w knee surgeries. She could have thrown a clot
ReplyDeleteProbably threw a clot - I had knee surgery last year (total replacement) and was on Coumadin for over a month. I thought even with minor knee surgery they gave an anti-coagulant for a week or so.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Amy. I bet she threw a clot. It's a shame, poor lady.
ReplyDeleteDeath is a risk with any surgery/procedure. You don't expect it for something minor or involving extremities, but it can happen. Sympathy to the family.
ReplyDeleteI just went to a funeral for an old co-worker a couple of months ago. She had knee replacement surgery and didn't make it out alive. She was in the hospital for about 3 weeks after the surgery, then she died. I know she was a diabetic. I don't think she had a clot though.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Patty, think twice about going under the knife for anything. And then there are those Super Bugs (infections) you can get in hospital too even if you survive the surgery.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought blood clot, too. Far too common.
ReplyDeleteA girl I know just lost her sister to a blood clot that traveled to her lungs, about 2 weeks after gastric bypass surgery.
A woman I looked up to like a mother died from a clot a few days after her knee replacement surgery. I have been putting off my knee surgery for the past three years due to this. My sympathies to the friends anad family.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely blood clot. Dan Blocker went in for gall bladder surgery and died of the same thing. Sad but very common.
ReplyDeleteI never go in for surgery unless I absolutely have to.
This crap scares me. I had a pulmonary embolism 3 years ago (blood clot that goes to lungs). Something like 1 in 3 people die if a clot gets to their lungs. Mine was caused by a medication.
ReplyDeleteThat is horribly sad. I'm sure it was a blood clot, very common. I had the same risk with my 4 back surgeries, except the last two times they took the extra precaution of putting in a metal device to help prevent it. I was allergic to the thing & had to take it out, but it kept me alive so no complaints.
ReplyDeleteThey can put in a filterlike she said to help block the clots from becoming a pulmonary embolism. In the hospital u are put on passive movement with the knee but once
ReplyDeleteU get home u need t o keep it moving
Wow, reading all your comments is freaking me out. I knew there were risks to surgery, but for so many people to know people who died during a routine procedure? Yikes.
ReplyDeleteeeep! i studied ballet for much of my younger years, and have had 5 knee surgeries (full knee replacement in one, reconstructs in the other), so this hits way close to home. clots are a very real threat...i hated those blood thinners, but am so very thankful for them. rip mia davis. i look at my scars and all i can think of is 'there but for the grace of god...'
ReplyDeleteLadies, read the fine print on your birth control packages.
ReplyDeleteBlood clot which could have led to a pulminary embelism. That's what happened to my friend...and all she did was twist her ankle. The blood clots formed and moved quickly to her heart. She almost died.
ReplyDeleteI was watching Road Trip the other night, too. I'm not kidding. It was the very night Mia died. I didn't even read about it until yesterday.
ReplyDeleteSpooky when that happens.
I thought the actress was Jennifer Hudson at first.
Mia was indeed a very pretty woman.
I back up all the other posters. Surgery of any sort holds real risks. Death being the most serious, but you can have a stroke, heart attack etc. I too worked with someone who was found to have a clot, he was in hospital, they had him on the meds to dissolve the clot, the clot moved, travelled to his heart and killed him.
ReplyDeleteAnaesthesia can cause all sorts of problems. One of my friends was in a really bad car accident, had surgery after surgery. By the end of them, he had to be monitored constantly because he wasn't waking up from the anaesthetic as he should be. He is fine, but it was pretty scary.
How awful! RIP Mia. :(
ReplyDeleteIt's really scary/disheartening that blood clots are the side effect of so many surgeries. People trying to correct one problem and then another one crops up.
It is very scary when it comes to having a procedure done at the hospital. First time I was having surgery I freaked out cause just a few days before there was an author that had plastic surgery done and she died from that. I can't remember if she ended up having a heart attack or what. So I went to another doctor so they would checked me out before having the surgery. It might have been a waste of money but I wanted to be sure. My procedure was having my gall-balder out. Took me a week to recuperate but really needed 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, conspiracy author Jim Keith died during knee surgery a couple of days after falling from a stage at Burning Man 1999.
