Sammy Reminded Me Of A Blind Item
Back in the 90's this group had a couple of big hits. College radio-ish for the most part but they made some national television appearances. Have not done much lately, but they always remind me of liquor so that is good. Anyway, back when they first started touring they had something in their rider about a massage therapist. It turns out they did not actually want massages, but a good rub and tug. Unfortunately they only could ask for one back then. One of their albums even has a picture of one of their therapists in the liner notes. Later, when they could demand more, they would make sure there was one for every band member each night.
The Gin Blossoms?
ReplyDeleteThe band Orgy?
ReplyDeleteUB40?
ReplyDeleteChumbawamba?
ReplyDeleteEverclear.
ReplyDeleteI know the Goo Goo dolls acted a bit scuzzy here in Milwaukee.
ReplyDeletebits of moxy beat me to it! UB40 with the song being Red Red Wine? Although Everclear is a good guess, too....too bad I'm too lazy to look up album covers ;)
ReplyDeleteBroken nose vessels caused by alcohol overconsumption?
ReplyDelete(aka The Gin Blossom's)
UB40's version of Red Red Wine was popular in the early 80s--I unfortunately know because my now ex-husband and I used to drink to it. Definitely not the good old days. So I'm guessing the Gin Blossoms.
ReplyDeleteOoo Ms. Cool! I'm in the Mil also, how were they scuzzy?
ReplyDeleteCitizen King and Veruca Salt came to a couple of my house parties. Citizen King stole my collection of Disney glasses! :(
Everclear is my guess.
ReplyDeleteHey Melissa - Matt from Citizen King asked me to tutor him in Logic when we shared the class at UWM. He never showed up. Nice manners!
ReplyDeleteI was good friends with a gal whose roommate told me she would sleep with the ugly dude (sorry - that is what we called him and I am not a fan so I don't know their names) from the Goo Goo Dolls when they came to town. I don't know what her occupation was or how she met him. I was just there for the conversation.
The Gin Blossoms remind me of liquor every time I hear their name as well. And they were indeed just a miscellaneous college-radioish band.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have no idea. But sharing a prostitute every night is so... homoerotic?
ReplyDeleteSpin Doctors was who I thought of, but certainly Gin Blossoms fit the 'liquor' bill.
ReplyDeleteloved gin blossoms. they're still recording so does that work?
ReplyDeleteEverclear! Everclear! Liquor reference, and the band only had a couple of hits -- and personally, I've never heard their songs on anything other than alternative stations. And it's been years since I even *thought* of them. Wow.
ReplyDeleteThe Gin Blossoms were bigger than college radio, and they had a handful of hit songs. Radio stations STILL play "Hey Jealousy." I seem to hear it all the time in the grocery store, too. :-/
I'm going with Everclear, but only because they seemed a little wilder than the Gin Blossoms. Now I want to listen to 'Santa Monica'. And get drunk with my high school friends. And sit in someone's living room screaming the lyrics and doing the ferocious pointy thing drunk people do when emphatically singing a song. Them were the days.
ReplyDeleteI read this and my first thought was the Replacements. I mean really, don't you think of them and think = drunk? But not a couple of big hits, unfortunately (the world woulda been a better place, too.)
ReplyDeleteeverclear?
ReplyDeleteCancan - The Mats broke up in '91. However, I could see it being them. But I think this one has Everclear written all over it.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the world would be a better place with The Replacements.
I second the Chumbawumba guess while drinking a whiskey drink, a vodka drink, a lager drink, a cider drink...
ReplyDeleteI love all the Midwesterners (sp?) on this site!!
ReplyDeleteMost,if not all of the bands mentioned are/were drunk.
Chumbawumba was a very political band (which, IIRC, was part of the reason they didn't stick around the top 40 after "Tubthumping"), so I doubt it's them. Have to say I could definitely see the 'Mats doing something like this, but they probably broke up too early in the '90s. Out of the ones listed, Everclear strikes me as the most likely; I think it was at one of their shows at the Paradise here in Boston that the Patriots' then-quarterback went stage-diving, landed on some poor girl, and messed her neck up rather badly. Also, for some unknown reason, Toad the Wet Sprocket comes to mind, and damned if I know why; I don't know enough about them to say they'd do such a thing. (Then again, damn near any horny young band might if they thought they could get away w/it.)
ReplyDeletePS: Tori Amos did/does travel w/a massage therapist, but I think I can safely say it's not for the sake of a happy ending...
My guess is Everclear. I still own "Sparkle and Fade" (I don't listen to it that often anymore but just looking at it reminds me of being in high school) and out of curiosity I ripped open the booklet. Every other page is a collage of photos, mostly of the band members as kids but the last page includes a photo of the lead singer standing next to a blonde girl. There are stars over her eyes that conceal her true identity (as does anyone else featured in the photos who isn't a band member). She could just be a friend or a sister, but to me this screams of a way of sneaking in a photo of your "massage therapist" in your liner notes.
ReplyDelete@Robin - hush! My Tori can do no wrong!! ;)
ReplyDeletewho sang the song, "closing time"? I am too lazy to look it up...
ReplyDelete^Semisonic
ReplyDeleteI have Gin Blossums & Everclear CD's so I need to go take a peek at the CD liners...
@Ms Cool - As long as it wasn't Johnny Rzeznik.... I LOVED him. :)
Violent Femmes. Hello, Blister in the Sun (big hands I know you're the one...)
ReplyDeleteGin Blossoms 1st cd I think is possibly the best cd ever..so many great songs..Sammy Hagar was known for a song called 'tequila' I think;so I would think this group had Tequila in their name?
