Howard Stern On The Cover Of Rolling Stone

After that Snooki debacle it is nice to see Rolling Stone put Howard Stern on the cover. Whether you like him, hate him, or are indifferent, at least I think he is more relevant to a Rolling Stone cover than Snooki. Plus, that Private Parts has been on HBO On Demand this month and since I have been sick I have been watching a whole lot of On Demand. Speaking of which, how come NBC is pretty much the only network who is on On Demand. Yes, there are many cable networks, but when you look closely you realize about half are owned by NBC.

In the interview Howard talks about his divorce, his therapy, the fact that he does not need as much sex as you would think he needs and also about Artie Lange. This is what I found most interesting. When you read his quotes about Artie and the suicide attempt, there is no banter or funny stuff, it is just about compassion for the guy and as he says, "keeping Artie alive."

  1. Artie Lange is one of the most gifted, and troubled, entertainers I've ever seen. And the compassion with which Howard Stern has shown Mr. Lange is truly incredible. I've been lurking here for a year, and this is the first time I've been compelled to comment.
    Thanks, Enty.

  2. I recently read Artie's book. He (admittedly) made life hell for everybody during his time on MADTV. He dearly loved working on The Stern Show.

Hope Artie gets his shit together for good. Because he is truly one funny, giant-hearted bastard.

  3. I love the show, Howard, Fred, Robin, Gary, etc. Artie clearly had issues, self-loathing but with a giant ego. Never a good combination. He was funny a lot, but boy, if the attention got off him for too long, he would do something to pull it back to him. In a lot of ways, a classic self-hating narcissist.

It was pretty shocking, what he did to try to kill himself, but the guy was in self-destruct mode for so long, it was probably inevitable. I hope he can get healthy.

  4. So funny howards cover reminds of those deep thought pics of gorillas, pondering.

  5. Not too fond of Stern. Also don't care enough to hate him. He doesn't shock me, he just has a pretty crap way of treating women.

  6. I'll actually have to pick up a copy of RS. I canceled my Sirius subscription last year and miss Howard and the gang. I especially miss Artie and hope he's doing well.

  7. I miss Artie on the show. He was so good when he and Howard did Ted Kennedy. "Er, ah...." loved it!

  8. Comcast purchased NBC in January. Comcast announced that one of the "perks" was unlimited access to NBC shows on demand.

  9. You know, I'm not a big HS fan, either, but I read some of the article that was posted online and I thought that his comments regarding his divorce, therapy and feelings about why he wanted to marry Beth were pretty cool and not what I expected from him. I won't go as far to say I have a new found respect for the guy, but I do in regards to those parts I read...

  10. Linnea i'm a huge fan so not sure when you or others say he treats women like crap. He doesn't treat women like crap at all. Strippers come in and strip they want to do it.

I just got the magazine and can't wait to read it. I think the pictures look great.

Private Parts is a very good movie. Don't care for Howard. I have Sirius don't really listen to his show.

  12. timebob, he doesn't just objectify women, he degrades them. He has them do things designed to humiliate them. It's fucked up.

  13. He says that all women are whores, that the attack on Lara Logan is evidence that women reporters need to just stay home... He constantly calls them sluts and whores. He also linked to websites where teenage runaways was sezually abused and made fun of it. And remember his comments about Sdibe?

  14. I think Howard Stern is an enormously intelligent man, which is partly why his blatant chauvinism bothers me so much. When Andrew Dice Clay or The Situation say inflammatory things about women, it's much easier for me to roll my eyes. With Howard, it tends to bother me more.

Then again, like I said, he's SMART. He knows what's generated huge ratings for a longass time. I just choose not to listen -- but I'll definitely read this interview. I'm curious.

*sigh* I just wish he could provide all women the same basic respect he shows his wife (and probably his mother and sisters, if he has any).

  15. Howard does not say "all women are whores," at least not seriously. Howard jokes a lot, but if you actually listen to him, it's very clear he's very much an advocate for women's rights and LGBT rights.

I first listened to Howard Stern a couple of years ago when I got 6 months free Sirius with a new vehicle. I have kept the subscription going and also have one on my computer, only for Howard. I am a liberal, fat, middle-aged, housewife in Oklahoma. I would not waste a second on a bully or on anyone who actually hated women or the gay community.

  17. My 19 y.o. daughter got into the car yesterday while I was listening to Howard and said "Ahhhhh, the radio show of my childhood".

Love Howard, miss Artie - I'm glad they decided not to replace Artie after he left. Sad.

  18. I thought this interview was very good. I have a mostly love, some hate relationship with him. I don't like some of the silly man things he does, especially when he has provided a forum for people to willingly degrade themselves. But he is also very self-aware, intelligent and I really do like the guy - just not some parts of his obnoxious radio persona, though I hear he is very shy and not like that at all in person.

  19. So glad Howard signed up for another 5 years- couldn't imagine my day without him!! Besides all the humor, he is one of the best if not THE BEST interviewer around. I do really miss Artie, though- I hope he is getting better.

  20. linnea -
That clip is from 1990 -21 years ago. It is obvious listening to it that he was being inflammatory for comedic effect.
He is the master of hyperbole, and would make a point of making outrageous statements to see if people will call him on it.

  21. LOL Jennifer H, I'm a liberal, middle aged, eaten one hamburger too many from Braum's, housewife in OK, too. There not many of us who support women's and gays rights here it seems. (I'm thinking Sally Kern for starters.)

I haven't listened to Stern since the early 90's when I lived in the DFW area. Been thinkin' about getting Sirius tho'. . .

  22. I can't imagine why Comcast wouldn't want all the hit shows or guilty pleasure shows available from all the networks on On Demand. Yes, I had read a while back that some of the networks were not liking the idea of Comcast buying NBC for, well a number of things, but one of them being the vested interest in playing up NBC and relegating the rest to oblivion. But unless Neilsens now accounts for On Demand viewings in ratings, I honestly can't see how this works in Comcast's favor if it's deliberate.

  23. Howard "has them do things"? They don't have any say or control over what they choose to do? I'd say this mindset is f'ed up.

  24. If you think Howard Stern is not a jerk to women, then I don't know who you have been listening to! He routinely humiliates them and loves for his male guests, if they are married to beautiful women, to humiliate their wives.

I'll never forget what he did to Becky Romain Lettuce when she was married to John Stamos. He did a whole rant about how old she was when she lost her virginity and John Stamos let his wife be humiliated! I am not a Becky fan, but I felt for her. Stern tried to get her current hubby to do it, but he backed down.

I still like Stamos, because I know a few of the same people, but I lost a lot of respect for him for what he did and continues to do with his girlfriends on Stern's show.

Stern brings out the most misogynistic tendencies in his male guests.

  25. farmgirl - i was just responding to someone saying that he doesnt call women whores. He does it in that clip, which is old, but it happens all the time. I just can't listen to that, no matter how intelligent the man is.

  26. When I had cable, there was more than just NBC but they definitely had the most shows. I have DirectTV now and haven't had time to see if they even offer that. I don't understand why all the networks aren't doing it either.

  27. I'm with Henriette and Linnea. Sure, Howie's a smart guy. Doesn't mean I have to appreciate his degrading-to-women and frat boy behaviour for laughs. Pass.
