Barefoot Contessa Hates Child Cancer Patients

I don't know how Ina Garten will ever recover from this one. Make A Wish contacted the Food Network host because a dying 6 year old cancer patient wanted to cook a meal with the Barefoot Contessa. Well, apparently her schedule was just too busy and said no to the child. Wait, it gets worse. How much worse? The first request came three years ago. When the chef said no, instead of trying to get another wish, the boy said to Make A Wish that he would wait. Well, the foundation went back to the chef this year and she said no again. Apparently she is still too busy. How the f**k long does it take to make a meal with someone. I am sorry if you are not going to get paid or that your book tours or other commitments just take too long. How the f**k can you say no to a 6 year old kid who is dying of cancer? How? How? How? What evil planet are you from that you can't find an hour or two over the course of several years for a child dying of cancer?

So, now Enzo is going to swim with dolphins. What a horrible woman.

  1. Wow......I always liked her...this seems so out of character...

  2. I just read the TMZ article on it and it's not as bad as Ent makes it seem. It's not like she called the kid and told him to jam it.

  3. God damn. If some child with a terminal illness wanted to do anything with me, I would drop everything.

    What an asshole.

  4. I'm with you, MISCH. I feel like there must be something else to this story. I love the Contessa! That being said, yeah....make the time, Ina.

  5. I love her too, from what I've seen on television. But it's just that, television...so who knows what she's like off-camera.

  6. Sorry but even though she didn't tell the kid to "jam" it as someone said doesn't excuse her behavior. What a cold hearted woman it's not like they didn't give plenty of notice. Give me a break...what an ass

  7. Somehow she should have been able to fit it in. Nobody is that busy.

That said, does anyone know how often celebs get asked things like this? I mean, could it be that she gets ten or so requests every week?

  8. I read the Make a Wish Foundations website and it says it could take a long time to grant a wish if it has to do with a sports star or a celebrity.

I dunno. All I know is that when Ent said that she "hated" kids with cancer it made me want to defend her. I highly doubt anyone hates a kid with cancer.

Per TMZ, she just said that she was too busy and could not accept all of the requests she receives. WTF? The child is DYING. Drop everything you conceited Bitch and give the poor child his wish. He has been waiting THREE YEARS ON YOU!!! UNBELIEVABLE!

  10. Even if she were too busy to accommodate the date given, she could have asked for the number of the family and tried to work something out. Good lord...stop by and say 'hi' while on a book tour or something.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am not a fan of hers, that being said..
I would rather be told no, then have teh wish be granted and the celebrity not "being into it".
Hopefully he will have the greatest time swimming with the dolphins and ride off to the heavens happily.
Does this make her a good person, maybe/maybe not, but last I checked it is still a free country.

ITA with you bits of moxy. He knows the deal.

Perhaps she cannot handle this emotionally, IDK?

"I dunno. All I know is that when Ent said that she "hated" kids with cancer it made me want to defend her."

Agreed! I can imagine that some celebs get multiple requests for this. I'm not sure that I could handle that much.

I don't have the energy to bash her because I don't feel that it is befitting in this case. Maybe a phone call would have sufficed.

  14. Actually, come to think of it, Lainey wrote something about Ina recently, about how she doesn't invite guests on her show ever. That being said, Lainey's post was about how she invited Goopy on, and it was a big deal because she doesn't want guests cooking with her (it is in her home, after all)

  17. Just for the record, none of us know the REAL reason Ina has declined. Sure, we can read the media hype and pass our judgements or give Ina the benifit of the doubt. Maybe she's lost a family member or close friend or even a child to cancer and doesn't feel like she could handle "cooking with a child that is dying of cancer".

  18. If it doesn't involve Jeffrey, she's not interested. Hearing her say his name during a show would be a good drinking game.

I think the whole thing is sucky, but it's her life and her time. She'd better keep an eye out for karma though.

  19. How funny, my father in-law was traveling to south carolina from NY on Monday and she was on his flight along with her husband and another couple. Looks like she has time for a vacation for not for charity...

  20. Oops "but not for charity"...

  21. her team, if they're smart, should already be in crisis management mode...however, you are sensationalizing, enty love. even the MAW peeps have already come out to say that ina has been a friend to/supporter of their organization for a long time. obviously there's more to this story. don't be so quick to jump on the hate bandwagon.

  22. I am not gonna bash Ina but i will say that one of the most requested celebrities that gets picked for make a wish foundation is John Cena and he has made over 200 appearances to see kids. If he can make 200 i think she can find the time to make one.

  23. My nephew also has ALL, and recieved a wish from the Make a wish foundation. He wanted to meet Rob Drydek, from MTV show Fantasy Factory. It didn't take very long and than the whole family was flown to Cali and put in a nice hotel with a whole group of MAW reciepients. Usually when a child wants to meet a celebrity, it is done in a group, so that the celeb, can meet with many at the same time. Any way, all the kids and family members spent a whole day with Rob at his Fantasy Factory. Rob also loaded up all the kids with DC merchandise and his own clothing line stuff. Rob than visited with each sick child alone and autographed anything they asked him too. It was an awesome experience for Michael at a time when he was very ill. So a MTV star showed this spoiled beyotch what real class and graciousness are. Barefoot Beyotch to me, now.

  24. I imagine it would be incredibly hard to spend time with a dying child... however, I imagine it's a lot harder being that child dying. This is just bad form on Ina's part.

  25. Springsteen granted a wish during his Born in the USA tour -- so I don't believe the crap about being too busy. Find the time Ina, young fans are few and far between for your profession.

  26. I never liked Ina Garten. She does not seem talented or very knowledgeable. Her knife work sucks on the show and the recipes are pretty sample. And WTF about shooting the series in soft focus. Is she a fan of Lucille Ball circa MAME? And this rant has nothing to do with MAW mess? Just that she is a mess and how did she ever merit a show on Food Network?

    ReplyDelete
  27. It could be that she's just shy or highly sensitive, but it seems as if she could take the time to do something nice for the kid. Even an autographed cookbook and a personalized letter would be a nice gesture.

    Just sayin'.

  28. Connie, your story just intensified my strange love for Rob Dyrdek.

I hope your nephew is doing well.

  30. She's always on our TV in the breakroom at lunch, and I mock her every. single. day. "Oh, Jeffery...." Agree that her show could make for a good drinking game.

Glad I have just one more excuse to dislike her. She always seems so stuck up her own ass.

  31. Thank you Lauren, Michael is doing well, now. ALL patients have chemo for 5 yrs. The younger the child, usually a better outcome. He was 16, when diagnosed, so his chances are not as good as Enzo's.
I will always love Rob, and he seeks no publicity, for his MAW work. At least this brings more attention to MAW, which is a charity that truly helps sick kids.

    ReplyDelete
  32. She should be honored beyond belief that the kid even knows who she is (because I never heard of her until about a year ago).

    Sorry - she's a c**t, pure and simple.

And honestly, who wouldn't rather swim with dolphins?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh man, Connie. Your post made me cry. I really hope your nephew pulls through.

I have always liked Ina Garten, but this has certainly changed my POV about her. I don't care how busy you are, you make time for things like this. As Connie mentioned, I am sure MAW could get a group of requests together to limit how often celebrities are asked to do this kind of thing. And I am sure it is difficult to do it - no one wants to be confronted with sick children. But you do it because you have to... Seriously, I think this is pretty offensive and I hope she gets a lot of sh*t for this. She deserves it.

Even if celebrities had to do this thing once a month, it's a small price to pay to keep their fans happy and have them continue to buy their books, movies, perfume or whatever else they are schilling to make that 38 millionth dollar this year.

  34. I'm with Erin up there. I mean, I get that there might be other circumstances keeping her from agreeing, circumstances that would be hard for us to understand. But still. What circumstances justify telling a little boy, who has clearly shown that the thing he wants most in his life is to spend some time with this woman, "This whole thing makes me uncomfortable, go find someone else to bother. What's that you say? You're dying? Well, I've got a book signing that day. I hear the dolphins aren't too busy for you."

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think you're being a bit harsh saying she HATES kids with cancer, Ent. BUT, that being said, there really is no excuse for not granting this little boy's wish. I don't care HOW sensitive you are. Man up and do it. This kid has waited 3 years and she can't take 1 DAY? Working in the biz, I know that celebs are inundated with requests, but I can guarantee you they are not inundated with requests from dying kids. Especially someone of her demographic of celebrity. Get over yourself, Contessa.

  38. I've been a volunteer for MAW for many years, and my brother was a wish child that met a celebrity. These celebrity wishes are totally at the discretion of the celebrity. They can spend as much or as little time with the kids as they want. They can meet kids individually, or in groups. And we do have some celebrities that have a very long wait list. Ironically, those are the celebrities that do the best job for our kids for the most part.

This, unfortunately, doesn't surprise me in the slightest. You'd be shocked at the number of celebs that won't make the time, or do a half-ass job. I've taken kids to meet celebs that were actually RUDE to the child. It baffles me.

I know I'm biased, but if I'm fortunate enough to have the world at my feet thanks to the support of my fanbase, the least I can do is make time for a sick child who's one wish is to meet me.

And whoever mentioned John Cena...you're 100% correct. He's amazing. As are Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Taylor Swift, off the top of my head. And there was a situation where Mos Def was scheduled to meet a wish child on the set of a movie some years back. The child became too ill to travel at the last minute, so Mos Def shut down his schedule, flew to her hometown, and spent the weekend with her. I don't like to dwell on the negative stories, but I love to share the good ones.

  39. @Wish... More tears. I love to hear about good people.

    ReplyDelete
  40. She can't handle it? OH PLEASE! You are an adult suck it the FRACK up and make the child's wish come true. I would even fly to the child and make it as easy on him as possible.I'd cook breakfast, lunch and dinner with him.

How many sick children are requesting her? She can't be that damn busy. It's a CHILD. You do anything they want.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hate to be the mold breaker here, but I would decline a dying child's wish. I would donate buttloads of money to MAw in lieu of having to fake a smile and endure every minute.

I can't stand kids. For all we know, perhaps Ina can't either. Or, perhaps she can't have kids and being around them means she will just burst into tears all the time. Or, she could very well be a cold-hearted bitch.

Call me one, too. I don't care. I am perfectly fine with her decision.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh Sue Ellen, where would we be without you to show us the other side? I just don't know.

There are a ton of celebs who bend over backward for these children when they don't have to. So maybe the choice of the phrase "hates cancer patients" is going a bit far. How about "Ina could give a flying fu@k about anyone other than herself"?

    Much more accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My God. I never really liked that woman anyway. But what a bitch.

  44. I'll cook with him. I mean, I'm not famous and I totally blow in the kitchen, but at least he'd have fun laughing at me for burning myself or something

  45. @ Aly-How the hell did ANYONE get a show on the Food Channel...It's all dumbed down and don't even get me started on the sister station with "Bitchin Kitchen". What a freakin' insult!

    ------------------------------------

I first thought of pro wrestlers when I read this, the WWE does go out of their way to help Make a Wish Foundation kids and has been doing so close to twenty years now if not longer. And those guys are lucky to get 30 days out of the year off. If they can make time, I would think a cooking show host can. But again, we don't know the whole situation. Food Network execs or maybe the people handling her book tour might have her under some type of contract that doesn't allow her to free up her time for such things as this? Idk...just speculating.

  48. @Marisa - Your post made me smile, so sweet!

The point is Ina, IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU.

If ever there is a time in your life to look past your damn self, it's for a dying child's wish.

The lack of compassion and humanity in this world is seriously freaking me the fuck out. Selfish bastards.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I like Ina but I'm utterly baffled that she turned a MAW request but made time for Paltrow? Must be something in the rarefied air of the Hamptons...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Not trying to defend this lady (she may really be a self-absorbed cold-hearted b), but what are the chances that the request never made its way directly to her? Perhaps one of her "people" -- if she has "people" -- turned down MAW on her behalf. Scheduler/handler/manager/agent-type people may plan her life for her and act as flack for all requests. Then again, if she has donated her $ so generously to MAW, then it would seem this request should have made its way DIRECTLY to her.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Hooman... You are definitely entitled to express your opinion, but your post makes me ill. How selfish and uncaring are you that you would not even be able to spend time with a dying child (ESPECIALLY if that is their dying wish). I do understand that not everyone likes children - I wasn't too fond of them myself until I had of my own. However, for you to be that cold-hearted is unfathomable. The only saving grace for humanity is the possibility (or, rather, probability) that you and people like you will not reproduce children to carry on your warped view of life.

  52. There's something here I'm just not getting. A six year old wants to cook with a food network host -- that in itself is a rather odd choice for someone of that age group. Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but if the first request came three years before, that would put a three year old having a dying wish to cook with the contessa. Does this sound plausible in any way?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've never liked her anyway. Her whole vibe is privileged Hamptons bullshit. And her food is really unhealthy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And to think I bought her brownie mix at Christmas.

The three year thing, to me, is totally inexcusable. She should be honored that a kid that young even knows who she is.

  58. There is something not adding up with this story: a 6 year old's MAW is to cook with Ina? And the first request came in 3 years ago? This story does not have the appearance of sounding kosher.
