Oprah Has A Half-Sister

You would think at some point in life, Oprah's mother Vernita would have shared the secret with Oprah that Oprah has a half-sister. You would be wrong. Kitty Kelley, who is doing an unauthorized biography of Oprah discovered the half-sister and the fact she was given up for adoption as an infant. On Oprah's show today, she introduces the woman named Bunny to the world as her half-sister.

“I thought I’d seen it all. But this, my friends, is the miracle of all miracles. I was given some news that literally shook me to my core. This time, I’m the one being reunited. Only a handful of people in my life know about this. I’ve been keeping a family secret for months, and you’re going to hear it straight from me.”

  2. I have a half-sister, too. Big fucking deal.

  3. her sister just won the DNA lottery. But I do find it interesting it was reported her mother declined wanting to meet her years ago. I guess she was trying to keep the Oprah money to herself.

Oprah's mom is not a very nice person to deny her daughter a meeting.

  6. If only all of us had a half sister from our parent's dalliances who ended up being one of the richest and most powerful women in the world.

I see Ms. Bunny having some nice x-mas presents from here on.

  7. Bunny has won the lottery. Of all the half siblings to have, a billionaire with no kids of her own.

Oprah's mother is horrible. I don't know why Oprah doesn't cut her off. The fact that her mom is still close to the man that abused Oprah as a child, says everything about that woman. And Oprah too, maybe her mother issues are why she can't lose the weight. I think I just had an "A-ha moment." Do mother's cause back fat? Things would be so much easier if I could cuss my mom out for mine.

  8. Didn't Kitty Kelley also discover who Oprah's birth father is??

  9. BFD. I can't believe this is all over the news today. zzzzzz

  12. lol @ FS!

what disturbs me is that there are actually mothers out there that hide this sort of thing...i know it was a different place and time, yadda-yadda...but =O .

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ FS hahahahahaha, thanks for that.

I appreciate Orpah spreads her money around (though with her kind of money if she didn't that'd be beyond selfish) to worthwhile causes and she seems to have overcome quite a few obstacles to be where she is today. I can recognize all of that, and I'm not even a middle aged middle class woman. That being said...

The EGO on this woman is nothing short of mind blowing.

I'm now ashamed of myself at having some way contributed it to it.

  14. Something tells me that Oprah will not leave any of her family members a lot of money when she dies.

Rich people are into to leaving "institutions" money and not their family now a days. They're taking a page from Warren Buffets' book.

  15. Good, I was wondering what her "big secret" was, and now I don't have to watch her show. (although I did watch some last week, bits of her in Australia--Russell Crowe was lookin' pretty good).

  16. A ha ha haaaaa!

@TheGWU just cracked me up with:

"Do mother's cause back fat? Things would be so much easier if I could cuss my mom out for mine."

Oh man, I had a good laugh with that one!

Yes, they are all now trying to BUY their way into Heaven because they walked on top of so many people (and in Buffett's case, whole COUNTRIES) to get to the top.

Bill Gates? Rot in Hell, you muth*rF*cker with your GD Windows SHIT.

    Fucker.

(wow, sorry...got off on a mini-rant there, sorry!)

  18. I'm always so surprised at the people who comment here and their hate on for successful women.

I do think this is kind of a big deal. If I found out that I had a half sibling stashed away somewhere that had been kept from me my whole life yeah, I'd think that was a big fucking deal. If I was one of the most famous, and richest, people in the world, and this half sibling had not attempted to contact me before, even bigger of a deal!

Oh, and yeah. I will most likely watch the show when I get home from work *L*.

maja, i'm not an oprah fan, but as a female with a small, successful business, i can tell and bore you with stories about my experiences with those who have utter contempt with my success. i'm sure that the martha's and oprah's of the world have tons more stories.

that being said, men applaud and have respect for one another's success even if there is envy, WOMEN and MINORITIES tear each other down.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @ Maja I agree. What's with all the negativity people? I too would think that at 50 or however old Oprah is and finding out she has a 1/2 sister would be a pretty big fucking deal!!! And.... ugh so much easier to tell someone to write off their own mother. Geez.

  21. Poor Gayle.

Also, is this a reveal to a previous BI?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I read that her sister actually knew about 4 years ago but never considered selling the story or trying to cash in. I guess Oprah was pretty impressed by that.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOL, I love the rant, Selena!

I agree, this is a cool story. Heck, there's a whole reality show about it, isn't there? That guy who goes and finds lost relatives? (I only know it from The Soup.)

  24. this was on the tv in one of my patient's room and he woke up and said, "OPRAH'S MY SISTER TOO!! YAY, I'M RICH!" lol, had me cracking up. That said, I think Oprah can say whatever the fuck she wants on her own show. You can always 'move along, move along.' I don't love the lady, but damn!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm glad she "found" her sister and that the sister did not cash in when she knew, that would impress the heck out of me too, and it really does not matter if she "hit the jackpot" who cares? That has nothing to do with finding out she had a half sister out there. I do think it is interesting that Kitty Kelley is the one who found her, and was the mom keeping it secret or what, the mom sounds like a piece of work. Maybe the mom resents Oprah and kept it hidden on purpose. I have read the Oprah helps her mom financially but her mom wants more and thinks she should have more money from Oprah.

  26. Oh yeah ...and way too much hype on this all weekend. I was thinking along the lines of, a secret child, Stedman's secret child or Stedman's is gay, or she was coming out with Gayle, etc. But this is big news?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not sure that I'm buying she believes this is a miracle. But if the woman isn't out to get her money then, hip, hip hooray for them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good Lord I don't hate on Oprah for her success. Nor fuckwad Bill Gates nor Branson nor Buffett nor ANYONE who is successful.

Hubby and me are also successful. As were our parents, etc.

But Oprah is a flippin' Demagogue and there ain't no two ways 'bout THAT.

So IMO she's just unbearable with the GD holier-than-thou bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like Oprah. She's rich, black, female and did I say rich? That's something that doesn't happen often in this world. Good for her.

Obviously, finding out -- at 50+ -- that you have a half-sister would be a big emotional event for a person. Her show is about relating personal experiences so that others may empathize. And yes, I watch it a couple of times a month.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's great personal news for Oprah, but sheesh, I think this news is to deflect all the attention on her being gay.

Like, "I DO have a secret! It's my 1/2 sister!"

BFD - it's not like she's the king or queen and this shakes up the order of whose to succeed her.

  32. Okay i just watched this and the "miracle" part has to do with a lot of the finer details of the story that aren't in the article; there were a number of weird coincidences.
As for those who say BFD, well if it happens to you, it absolutely is a BFD. For example, my mom's youngest brother was killed a number of years ago. I was away at school and wasn't told until a few weeks later when I came home for break so I didn't go to the funeral. I was able to get ahold of his obit and found that I was listed as his sister instead of his niece, as I had been lead to believe my whole life. After confronting my mother, she still wouldn't admit the truth for *years*. At least Oprah and her newly-found sister have a much happier ending than I did so I am wishing for the very best for them.

  33. Good for O and her sis.

The media made this up to be a huge dark secret. I told my sis and a friend that I would only think it's a big deal if Oprah was Sidney Portier's lovechild.

  34. I think it is a big deal. I can't imagine the things this woman has had to deal with in regards to her family. If I found out I had a 1/2 sibling at 50, I'd be dumbstruck.

I think Oprah was pushed into this by Kitty Kelly and the media getting wind of the news. So, to control it and to be ethical, she spilled. Can you imagine if she never revealed this? She would be lambasted.

I don't watch Oprah, but have a lot of respect for her.

  35. I'd rather win the "I Was Adopted From A Third-World Country by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt" Lottery.

But this one is good too.

  36. @Bangagong -- Good grief, your story sounds even more interesting. You should write a book.

  37. @Melody the First Well I'll tell you this: When it was finally confirmed for me, I found that I needed to tell other people about it just to see if I was out of line for being so stunned and angry. Sadly, it's not a unique situation but the way I found out about it was. Very disorienting.

I found out at 13 that I had a half-sister from my dad, AND in retaliation for me finding that out, my dad told me that my mom had a son a year before me. Woo hoo! Two half-siblings in one day! I didn't get to meet my half-brother til I was 31...it's a big deal. Siblings are major. I'm very happy for Oprah, and the fact that this one seems to only want the sister relationship with Oprah when there is obviously so much more that one could want has got to make Oprah feel like she is the one who hit the lottery. I can't imagine how lonely it could be when so many people just have their hands out. I wish her and her sister a long and healthy, loving relationship.

I was my father's secret child and I found out I had a younger brother. I knew I had an older sister, but she did not know about me. It was awful and I don't speak to any of them anymore. My half-siblings spouses were just wretched to them about me. It is not always a rosy picture in these scenarios.

  40. Bangagong, was it he was your mom's secret son or did your grandma have your mom raise you?

  41. I received a phone call four months after my mother passed from the daughter she gave up for adoption, a younger sister. I had asked my mom if she wanted me to track her down when my mom entered the end stages of breast cancer, but she said no, she knew she had done the right thing and it was a done deal. It was very painful for her.

That being said, the "sister" turned out to be a bitch of the highest order, and not in a good way. It was not a pleasant experience. Family doesn't mean blood related, IMO.

Don't like Oprah, never have. But I hope she has better luck than I did.
