Glenn Close Explains Her Navy Video Cameo

The US Navy fired Captain Owen Honor for his raunchy, horrible video that he made while serving aboard the USS Enterprise. Towards the end of the video, right after a scene involving condoms and lube, Glenn Close suddenly appears on the video. She was a visitor on the ship several years ago and made a video, which was cut into the video featuring masturbation, homophobic slurs and too many other unmentionable things. Glenn said, "I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor. The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request of me during a visit to the aircraft carrier over four years ago."

  1. Loved her in "Damages". Not so much in this.

  2. I'm sure George Lucas is none too pleased about his THX theme music, either

  3. I am just shaking my head. When will people have the sense to keep their bias/racism in their bloody heads?!

  4. OMG -- I can't believe a captain of the Enterprise would produce something like this. These guys look like a bunch of dweebs, not people I would want on one of our navy's flagship vessels. After watching just part of the video, I imagine it must be tough to be a female in the US Navy, having to deal with such a$$holes on a day-to-day basis. Fire them all, I say!

  5. If people spent time around USN personnel you wouldn't think this video would stand out at all compared to a lot of other things.

  6. ITA, penelope.
I was a server for 15 years, and lemme tell you, servers are RAUNCHY people. But they're just protecting dinner.
I seriously am embarrassed that this dude lives in the 50's and yet held such an important job in our military.

  7. This is happening in our backyard; was plastered over the local news before it hit the national media.

What got me right away was just HOW MUCH time this XO had on his hands...he was producing these one-a-week, or so they say.

I do believe it was a big morale boost for a lot of the sailors on board; I can't imagine being out to sea away from everyone you love for so many months at a time. Must get bonkers stir-crazy. The military is enormous around here and sooooo many families go a very long time without their dads and moms.

But there were obviously people on board who were appalled and offended but were too scared to speak out, and for their sakes I am glad this came out.

But I also agree with .robert above: this is probably nothing, comparatively.

Must SUCK being a female or gay person of either gender on board ship or sub.

  8. I'm SHOCKED!! Number one that he lost his job over this and number two that it isn't all that bad. It all seems like pretty standard fare for the navy, if you ask me. I'm not the least bit shocked. While it's raunchy and offensive, it's not much worse than some of the movies I've seen over the years. Oh...and it wasn't funny. It was actually really lame.

  9. I think the only people who are going to be shocked by this are the people who think every single person in uniform are "heroes" who think only about what "heroic" act they will accomplish that day.

I grew up around the military. This is probably mild compared to a lot of stuff that goes on. I'm sure he only got fired because it was made PUBLIC, not that it was made.

BTW, from all the talk, you would think that they put Glenn Close in the segments involving the f-word and masturbation, not a highlight reel of mostly banal stuff.

  11. I know those in the military aren't only heroes, but they are heroes who put themselves in harms way to keep us safe. But, then again, one must realize that many of those willing to do the kinds of things that military must do aren't going to always be the purest souls on earth. They are tough, gritty and willing to shoot someone. So it's a fine line. They need to be tough, be able to let loose and laugh at life, but they should also try to be respectful of their fellow comrades, who are also serving their country.

  12. He's probably gotten promoted all these years because he became the go-to frat bro for parties and fun stuff.

This is probably just a symptom of his poor judgment and lack of boundaries; I'd love to see his performance reviews. Probably the Secretary of the Navy would like to see them, too.

  13. Never worked in the military, but I have worked in a factory, and let me tell you this is exactly how guys talk in the locker room. Things might be different in a country club locker room, but blue collar guys really let it go when they start. And not many country club members join the military. This stuff is pretty tame really. And as someone upthread said, I have seen worse in movies and on television.

And FTR, other "heroes" like police and fireman also talk like this when they get together. They have to let off steam somehow.

It's offensive for sure, but if someone is going to risk their life to defend mine I can't really complain can I.

  14. Pathetic. I watched that video and saw an old guy trying to look cool to the much younger crew he's in charge of. He's trying to hang onto his fighter jock glory days, when he is way past it.

Imagine if that had been done by a woman officer of his age and rank. Nobody would be amused, they'd just think, What a pathetic old fool.
