Your Turn

I don't think I have done this for a year or maybe more, but today, the place is yours. Plug whatever you need to or say what you want to say. Tell people about a favorite site or place or video. Anything you want. Have at it.

  1. I am walking tomorrow in the Briggs & Al's Run & Walk for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

Children's Hospital saved my little boy's life when he had 4 heart surgeries - 2 of them open-heart. My nephew, who was born in April, had spinal meningitis that same month and was treated at Children's. My oldest nephew, age 17, was just diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. We have lots of reasons to support this great, non-profit, hospital.

I don't have a lot of sponsors so I'm just going to throw the link to our FirstGiving page here. Times are tough so I know a lot of people can't give which I think is why I don't have a lot of sponsors.

I don't know how to make it a clickable link.

    Thank you!

  6. In less than two weeks, I will be leaving to backpack through Southeast Asia for seven months. Alone.

The goal of my site is to show other women that solo travel can be safe, easy and incredibly liberating!

I'm trying to make it as a full-time freelance writer and web site developer as well. I am TRYING SO HARD to make it work financially.

I hope you join me on my travels!

  8. If you have more time than money these days, maybe you would consider being a child advocate? I've been volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem for a few years. You can directly influence a child's present and future. http://www.guardianadlitem.org/

    This is me!

I also work at an alt-weekly called The Georgia Straight in Vancouver, B.C. Read it. It can be fun at times.

  19. I discovered Korean dramas over the summer. Boys Over Flowers is the greatest television show I've ever seen, and my new favorite actor is Lee Min Ho. You can watch Asian dramas legally with English subs at mysoju.com (I'm not affiliated with this or anything, just spreading the word to anyone interested!)

  20. @jess -- You sound FAR more badass than me! Holy crap! Have you looked into Fulbright scholarships or other grants? That's a dream of mine someday.

You and many other CDANers would enjoy this story I read on Jezebel:

  21. @Adventurous Kate - I spent a good deal of time travelling across Southeastern Asia (not all at one time). You will have a blast! Good luck! Oh - and I promise if you say "Gam ern" in Vietnam, you will be the hit of wherever you are. It means thank you, but it really cracks the locals up (because it is sort of formal and seldom used).

  22. I saw this posted on FB the other day. People are being asked to wear purple on Oct. 20th to honor the 7 homosexual boys who committed suicide after homophobic bullying. This looks like it's a link to the site that started it all, but it is also circulating Facebook.

@Adventurous Kate There's no way I'm that much of a badass but thanks. Going to Germany would be awesome but it's not just me, we're a group of students with a project so getting a Fulbright scholarship is more difficult.

  40. K, I'll comfort you by saying this. My husband and I spent close to $150K trying to hav eour one son, and we will never have any more children. This one son is Autistic, and unless a baby drops out of the sky, we won't have another child.

So basically, you are saving yourself about $300,000. So enjoy the savings and kiss them for me!!! I'm envious!

  54. i am enjoying reading what everyone has to say, 'no holds barred'.

i am a canadian and today my husband, two kids and myself are heading over to a friends house for turkey dinner. i'm bringing a giant costco pumpkin pie and whipped cream.

i was born in canada but raised in the usa, and when i first moved back to canada (to marry my husband), it was so fricken weird to me that you did thanksgiving before HALLOWEEN! i couldn't fathom it. hubby had no family around either, so for years we both just grabbed OT shifts at work for extra money. anyway, when our daughter was 3 i realized she would grow up with no thanksgiving memories :( so that year i invited all of our friends who didn't have any family in our area and the first annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Wayward Souls was born. Even though we are going to a friends house, I'm thankful I have friends that are like family to me, I always call my close friends my chosen family. We've made some pretty strong roots here and as someone who moved A.LOT. when I was a kid that means a lot to me.
