What Is Taking Someone For Granted?
Over the weekend, Susan Sarandon gave an interview to the Telegraph. It was her first lengthy remarks on her relationship with Tim Robbins. Susan said that after her first marriage, she decided she would not marry Tim Robbins. The reason? "I've always liked the idea of choosing to be with somebody. I thought that if you didn't get married you wouldn't take each other for granted as easily. I don't know if after twenty-something years that was still true."
After 20 years together, what is taking someone for granted? I think there must be a fine line between taking someone for granted and having them be there for you. Plus, it also seems that if there are children involved there also become routines and that you assume one person will do something while the other person does something else. I think whether it is marriage or just living together or even dating that both people have to make an effort. Maybe that is what she means. You have to work at relationships to keep them alive and not stagnant. I think sometimes after so long together it is easy to forget the reasons why you got together in the first place and you need to work on reminding each other on why you did.
