Dana Delany Had Botox Nightmare

It is because of stories like the one Dana Delany shared with Prevention Magazine that makes me cringe when I see Botox parties or moms giving their daughters Botox injections. In the interview Dana describes her first and only Botox experience. “Seven years ago, I had never heard of Botox. My dermatologist was saying, ‘You should try it.’ He injected my forehead, hit a nerve, and created a huge hematoma. The nerve has been dead ever since. It affected the muscle in my right eye, so my eye has started to droop a little bit.”

That kind of thing scares the heck out of me. Everyone says it is easy and no problem and it probably is 99% of the time. But what about the other 1%? This was a doctor who did this. What about the people who are not licensed and just decide to buy some and inject their friends to save on doctors bills?

In the same interview, Dana also talked about her eating issues and how when she was a young actress, many says all she would eat would be an apple or a piece of toast.

  1. Injecting deadly toxins into your body? How could that possibly be a bad thing?

  2. I ain't gonna lie, I wanted botox for my 35th birthday (this month), then a friend sent on an article about botox animal testing. Apparently 100 mice are injected per batch test, and the "successful" batches are those that kill 50% or more of the mice. Horrifying. Forehead rinkles it is! (on that note, anyone know any GREAT wrinkle solutions?)

  3. The first time I heard of Botox I thought botulism to the face is probably not a good idea. I think facial lines are stories of a life well lived.

  4. I'm all about sunblock, makeup, and a good moisturizer. Olay!

  5. I always thought she was filmed a little fuzzy on DH; like they used vaseline on the lens to make her look softer.

  6. Vanity Fair had a major story a few years back about I think a Hollywood producer's wife who had chronic headaches ever after. And every once in a while you read about the extreme pain that comes with certain plastic surgery and medical personnel being totally unsympathetic. If it happens to the super rich and superstars I really don't want to know what it would turn out like for anyone in my family.

  8. I think the only thing that helps against wrinkles is staying out of the sun and using lots of moisturizer. Doesn't have to be expensive moisturizers. You know the anti-wrinkle creme commercials on TV - how that all say that they "diminish THE LOOK of wrinkles"? They can't say that they diminish wrinkles, since that is impossible with a cream. However, ANY moisturizer will diminish the look of them. Hydrated skin looks smoother.

Other than that, I think the best defense against aging is a good attitude. Negative people age faster, have you noticed?

  9. Oh, also: I know quite a few people that have had Botox and Juvederm. And they don't look any younger. They look like they've had Botox and Juvederm.

  10. @RocketQueen - vit. A creme. It sloughs off surface layers and stimulates collagen growth. I've been using it for 20 years for acne and was thrilled to later learn about its additional benefits. It works. I stopped using it for six months and noticed a difference. Now I use it for cosmetic reasons, not acne.

  11. Oh yes, I'd never go near botox. Even without negative side effects or complications, I'm not interested in walking around with a serene look on my face 100% of the time. Even when it's done well, I don't like the 'look' of people who've had it done.

  12. I thought about it briefly for the lines between the brows...when I sleep I scrunch my face...my friend said Frownies....def was a better way to go...

  13. I feel as though I tell this story every time Botox is brought up on CDAN. Oh well, it's a good one. My dad's a doctor, and his wife is a PA who specializes in this stuff. They had a few containers of Botox in the fridge for a while. They Botox each other in the face all the time. I guess it's their way of bonding?

  14. I've used it for migraines and stress relief of headaches. Works like a charm. But I don't care about wrinkles in my face.

  15. @karmen, I've never heard your story before but it's pretty funny. LOL!

  16. If it didn't require a shot, I might do it between my eyebrows, or around my eyes, or my mouth.... on second thought forget it.

A friend had it done recently and on her way out of the doctor's office she commented that it really hurt. The doctor wasn't too happy with that. Needless to say she won't be going back.

  18. Thanks Ms. - any special brand? I have deep forehead creases that aren't really wrinkles, but apparently doc says I have strong muscles there that are causing the creases to be permanent - think Gordon Ramsay.

  19. The Brandi Carlile song, "The Story", sums up how I feel about growing old & Botox:

"All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am"

  20. I hope Dana Delany sued that quack.

@ RQ - Also, drink lots of water. Sometimes I have to force myself to drink it, but I down as much as I can.

  21. i've been to a lot of botox parties...all w/ actual drs doing the deed...and i've been so tempted. the only thing that holds me back is my irrational fear of needles. that said tho...botox can look great...look at jho. while i hate to compliment anything about her...i must admit, her botox is fabulously done...doesn't look stiff at all. now if only it would cure her constipation mouth pout pose.

  22. I have to give a shout out to Paula Begoun and her line, Paula's Choice! She is super informative, and my skin has never looked better.

  23. Thanks Mango - you're right. There's a marked decrease in their depth when I drink lots of water. It would help if I laid off the wine, but that won't happen ;)

  24. @ RocketQueen - vitamin A cream is prescription, so ask your doctor. Stivia A creme is one. Retin-Micro is another. They all have Tretinoin as the ingredient. I use .1% - which is very strong and my skin is used to it. I strongly recommend that your doctor prescribe a less strong tube.

You use a tiny bit once a week to start - and no matter what you will experience flaking and peeling that will start after the third day. Use moisturizer and use a face cloth to exfoliate.

This will help plump the skin hide fine lines, but furrows as you describe are permanent. vit A cream will help with the appearance, but they don't go away. Fillers might be the way to go. I am considering that for the lines between my eyebrows...

  25. @Ms. I use Retin-A for my acne and the extra benefit of smoothing fine lines is awesome at my 39 yrs old! I couldn't live without it! It is the BOMB. Don't need Botox when we've got that!

  26. I second MISCH's suggestion: If you tend to get the "angry wrinkles" Frownies actually helps. A lot! I have been using them on and off for more than five years now. Using them makes you stop frowning, so you get used to relaxing your forehead.

For wrinkles that are due to normal aging I would say glycolic acid and retinol is the way to go.

  27. Facial Acupuncture and MicroCurrent work... but you still need to train yourself not to tighten the muscle so many times a day or it will come back :)

  28. Know what's kept wrinkles away for me? A few extra pounds. Even plastic surgeons said that.

I've been using Clinique's Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector. I've definitely noticed a big improvement in my skin's texture. Shouldn't have done all that sunning as a teen, but you don't think about getting dark spots when you're 16.

I will never get plastic surgery, Botox or any fillers. I don't mind looking my age, albeit good for my age.

  29. I just read an article about this the other day that made me decide I'd never have it either. I believe they said that an alternative to botox was some kind of chemical peel?? I've also read re: glycolic acid and retinol.

Speaking of botox, there is a store(?) setup in my local mall that does this and a handfull of other cosmetic procedures. They also have huge yellow vans parked outside the mall that have advertisements for mobile Botox-ing, for those that want to get a little Botox on the go. There is no way in hell I'd let someone driving a van go anywhere near me with a needle.

  30. My mother has had multiple facelifts (this was before botox). The doctor managed to sever a nerve at the top of her forehead. She's 78 now. She looks 78. Kind of hard to change nature.
