Your Turn

This one is slightly different than normal. This week for some reason I have been going to bed much earlier than normal. Usually I am a 2am kind of person and then I usually fall out of bed around 7 or so. Not much sleep but I seem to get by. Now, all of a sudden in one week I am my parents who have been known to go to bed in the summer before it even gets dark. This week I was asleep before 11 three times. I did not feel any more alert or refreshed though. Anyway, I want to know how many hours you sleep at night or what time you go to bed? What is normal? No better way than to ask all of you.

  1. I used to be able to stay up until 1 or 2 am, then get up at 5:45 am, take care of the kids, and go to work. now in my fifites, if I stay up past 11 pm, I am notoriously bitchy and tired at work the next day. so, I have changed from a night owl into someone who goes to bed before 11pm. I never in my life thought that would happen!!

  2. I am a mess. During the week, I'm up at 6:30 AM and go to work, come home at 6:30 PM, quickly eat and then work on my travel site and freelance writing until 1 AM or later.

Then on the weekends, I sleep 12 hours straight to make up for my lack of sleep during the week.

    This WILL pay off. Eventually.

  4. Well enty...thats weird because up until a week ago I was good on about 5 or 6 hours a night. But for the last week I've not felt rested on that and have actually gone to bed earlier. . . maybe its that time of the year...where that hibernation feeling creeps in?

  5. I put my daughter to bed at 7 and sometimes make it to 9:30 myself. We need to get up by 6 at the latest to get her to school by 7:30 and me to work by 8:30.

  6. @skeeball...that sounds familiar, and i'm only 31! i have to get to bed around 10 (or earlier sometimes) to get up at 5 the next so i can drive that big old school bus. if i DO stay up until (god FORBID) 1 or 2, it takes me 2 days to recover! i'm a lightweight :)

  7. Just tried to remember the latest I had stayed up intentionally in recent memory, ie not because of insomnia. I came up with 11:30 pm.

  8. I'm taking pain management meds, so I sleep about nine hours at a stretch. I'm not cranky or anything if I don't get enough sleep: I just nod off. Not such a great thing in Church or at a meeting. I don't drive much, to say the least.

I have a Tempurpedic mattress and a Tempurpedic pillow, and my husband can never get enough sleep either, so it's sleep heaven at my house.

We also have two dogs who are always up (or, down) for a snooze anytime Mom feels like it.

  9. I'm a night owl. Always have been. I used to go to bed at midnight when I was ten, and I generally went to bed around 2-3 in high school and college. Sometimes even later.

Nowadays it depends on where I am. If I'm at my place, I'll turn in around 11-1. My sister goes to bed at 9-10 cause she's a pansy. At my boyfriend's, we go to bed around 1 or 2, since we don't have to wake up til 7:30-8. I HATE mornings. It's absolutely miserable trying to wake me up. I have a higher cognitive function when I'm drunk than I do when I've just woken up.

  10. I'm an insomniac so this can vary anything from 10pm to 6/7am and usually sleep about six hours or so, if I'm lucky.

As you can imagine, I'm usually cranky in the morning, even after caffeine.

I sincerely wouldn't wish insomnia on my worst enemy :(

  11. I get into bed around 11. On a good night I finally fall asleep around midnight. Then I proceed to wake up at least a dozen times throughout the night until my alarm finally goes off at 5:45 am. I am lucky if I get 4 hours of sleep a night. I wear a Body Bugg and it has told me on numerous occasions that I have actually slept only a little over three hours. ARGH!

  12. Typically, I am a night owl, but on weekdays/workdays, I need my sleep. So, getting 6-7 hours of sound sleep is restful for me.

I turn in between 10-11p weekdays, and any ole time for other days. If I did not sleep well the night before and I am sluggish, then it's between 9-10p.

    I DO LOVE TAKING NAPS!!

  13. I go to sleep around 11 and wake up sometimes several times during the night. I usually get up at 6:30 during the work week. I find that I do best on 7 hours of sleep.

  14. I love to sleep. During the week, I try to be in bed by 9:00 (I get up at 5:30). On the weekends, I'll stay up until I can't keep my eyes open - usually midnight and then sleep until 9:00. I have been known to stay up all night if I'm being sexed up or playing drinking games. :)

  15. West End Girl- I feel ya on the insomnia! I have it HORRIBLY bad. Normally i'm bed at 2 or 3 and up at 6:15, but it depends... I can lie down in bed at 11 pm and sleep for an hour, up for an hour, sleep for an hr, etc.

I average about 3-4 hrs/night. NEVER GETS ANY BETTER. I'm constantly tired.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have never been a big sleeper, and as I get older I seem to need less and less. Usually go to bed around 1:30 or 2am and am almost always up by 7:30.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I go to bed late as hell, unless I have an early morning class, which I do my best to ensure doesn't happen, and am up by 11 am at the latest. It's nice not to have a 9-5because getting up 5 am is whack.

love to sleep. 7 to 8 hours works best. i am self-employed, so i take naps in the afternoon, get up and cook dinner. then i work for about 3 to 4 hours at night, while watching tv. :)

In my late 30's I would stay up till midnight. Weekends would party till 3-5 am. When I got married (2nd time) I would go to bed by 10 or 10:30. Lately I've been going to bed by 9:30 or 10. Wake up at 5:30 am or 5:45.

  20. I don't sleep for about two or three days at a time...due to night terrors. And even when I do sleep, it's only for about four to six hours.

    I'm never tired, though.

  21. Workdays: bed 1am up 6am
    Weekends: bed 3am up 14pm

  22. No matter what time I go to sleep I always get up at 5:15am, which totally sucks when I am off.

  23. Normal? And you're asking us? heh heh

If we've had a puff or a cocktail or two before, during or after dinner, Hubby and I usually fall asleep on the couch in front of the TV anywhere btw 8:30pm and 10:30pm, then wake up right as we hear Jon Stewart come on, drag into the bedroom with cricked-necks, then have a bit of a hard time falling asleep for real once we're in bed.

If I haven't had any alcohol I can last until 1:00am flipping through stupid BS on TV or reading until I fall asleep.

While I watch very little actual regular "shows" and almost no network TV, we seem to watch a lot of Discovery, History, cartoons, news and TruTV...that sort of oddball stuff.

  24. Fellow insomniacs, I feel you pain. I could stay up for 3 days straight. I used to be able to sleep 18 hours +. Now without meds or libations, I just don't sleep. I truly envy people who can sleep anytime they want.

  25. During the week I have to be up at 6:30 a.m., so I try to get to sleep around 9:30 p.m. On weekends I sleep until 8:00 a.m., and stay up until about 11:00 p.m.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Typically in bed by 10:30 and up by 6a.m. during the week. I used to be able to sleep in till 1pm on weekends, now I'm up by 8am....boooo.

Weekdays..Bed between 11-12am, up between 5 and 5:30 depending on how many times i hit snooze, and if i can make myself go out and run before work.
Weekends..bed between 12-1, up between 7:30 and 830 Somehow I cannot sleep in till 10-11 anymore. Maybe because I'm no longer out drinking till 2-3am. :(

  28. I work at home so my hours are odd to begin with, but usually to bed by 11:00 PM and up around 7:30 AM...but this changes depending how busy it gets...

    ReplyDelete
  29. During the week I go to bed on average between 1a - 2a. Mostly because i work two jobs and i get home around 10:30 - 11p at night so i have to unwind. I average about 4 hours of sleep a night. I gotta get up at 6:30a for work.

The weekends i go to sleep anywhere from 1a - 7a and i will wake up at anytime between 9a - 1p.

  30. lol @ sunnyside! I can't even DRINK like I used to. Now a couple of beers and a half bottle of wine with my bf and I want to go to sleep before 9 it seems. If I'm reading a good book I''ll stay up til midnight, but usually around 11pm, up at 7. I likee my 8 hours!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I get up at 5 on weekdays...I really feel my best when I get 7-8 hours of sleep but that rarely happens. On nights when I have rehearsals or meetings, I dont even get home until after 10 and it takes me a while to wind down. On nights when I'm home, I sometimes catch myself and manage to get my ass to bed early enough, but I usually end up watching TV or a movie and stay up too late anyway. I LOVE sleeping in on the weekends...or even if I wake up early, just laying in bed listening to my husband puttering around is awesome!

  32. The Mum always said I wouldn't sleep even as a baby. I HATED naps and having to go to bed when I was little. Now, I would absolutely love to be able to sleep and sleep well. I take Advil P.M. and melatonin when I get desperate.

I get in bed at 11 p.m. with Friends (the TV show) and usually thrash around until midnight. The alarm goes off at 6 a.m. and I hit the snooze button until I'm semi-conscious and able to walk to the coffee maker.

I can't sleep in like I used to either and if I do stay in bed on Saturdays, I wake-up every hour after 6 a.m.

  33. I'm a confirmed night owl, love going to bed at 3 a.m. and waking up at 10.

But my bf works nights, so I've been conforming to his sleep pattern, which is close to my pattern when I was an insomniac: Go go bed at 9 p.m., wake up at 1 a.m. when he goes to work, go back to bed at 3-4 a.m., sleep till 8:30 or 9 when he comes home, sleep till noon or 1. UGH! But I have a great sleeping companion.

  34. work week: 7 hrs sleep/avg...go to bed by 11pm most nights and up around 7 or 7:30am.

I am a weekend warrior so I really have no limits then. Until I poop out.

  35. I've always needed at least 8 hours sleep to feel normal the next day. I go to bed at 9 ish and read until 10 then up at 7 for work. Our son (22)is the same as I am but our daughter (25) is like her dad she can go on almost no sleep. It doesn't matter when my hub goes to bed he is up at 5:30.

I used to stay up late on weekends but now, sadly, I find my self going to bed early and I feel old

  36. I feel so badly for those who have insomnia. Like WestEnd Girl (and Sunnyside)said she would not wish that on anyone. I imagine it must be horrible. I like to get in bed by 10PM to be able to wake by 7. I get a full 9-10 hrs and then I can nap anywhere. I'll typically have a 20-30 minute battery recharger around 1:30-2PM so I will take a late lunch to get that in. And I can fall asleep on a plane, a train, in a boat over a moat. Smoke alarms and chainsaws surround me and yet I sleep. I wake, pee, go back to sleep. Baby, you name it. And I am not narcoleptic. My husband calls me the sleep ho. And I love the downtime. So yeah, all you insomniacs I cannot imagine the hell you live with every day. My heart goes out to you.

  37. I am pretty sure I win in this contest. I wake up at 3 in the morning for my 4 am shift. Sometimes if the world is feeling extra cruel, I have to start work at 3 am and thus get up at 2.

I usually go to bed around 830-9.

Just saying, be nice to your friendly Trader Joe's employee girls. We're tired.

  39. I can only sleep 6-7 hours, unless I'm sick, in which case I can sleep a bit more, maybe 8. My problem at the moment is my body wants me to go to sleep early, sometimes I'm nodding off on the lounge at 8:30pm. If I go to bed at 9pm, I wake up at 4am, so I force myself to stay awake. I get up at 5:20am Monday to Friday because I go to the gym before I go to work. This nodding off early only started happening after I turned 40, I am 41 now and the only good thing is I can now sleep on planes, whereas before I literally stayed awake from Sydney to LA. Sleeping makes the plane ride better.

  40. I'm insomniac too, and I get really bad when I'm worried or stressed about something. I just finished my masters and for the first two months I averaged 0-2 hours of sleep a night I was so stressed (I was the youngest and least experienced in the course) and on a 65 hours a week university course. Plus I had a part time job. It was a nightmare! I could barely speak after a week of it. Even sleeping tablets and Xanax to calm me down wouldn't work! I really feel so sorry for the others here who have insomnia too because it's torture!

  41. Midnight until 5AM during good weather. I get up at 4:30AM when the snow flies.

If I am not working the time changes and I get 6-8 hrs of sleep a night.Woohoo for days off.

  42. 8 hours is a must or i am a beast.
i'm a nightowl by nature but if i'm tired its because i woke up early and i need sleep NOW.

when i worked a 9-5 it was in bed no later than 12 ,up by 730.

I really try to get 8 hours, which means getting to bed by 9:30 on work nights. And usually on Fridays too, since I'm tired from the workday, I always have all these intentions to be a night owl, but by 10:00 Friday night I am one big mass of yawns and streaming eyes. I try not to get too far off schedule, but usually am up until midnight or so on Saturdays. This is all learned behavior, my body would prefer to do its sleeping from 2:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. but not too many offices will deal with that.

I am getting old. There was a time I'd close the bar, go out to breakfast, and skid into the house just in time to eat and shower for work. No more.

  44. I try to get 8 hours. However I can't sleep straight through. I usually go to bed between 11-12 but then I almost always wake up around 3 and am awake for a couple of hours. I usually get work done and surf the internet then go back to bed. This was fine when I was single, but now that I am engaged and the DF is living with me, I disturb his sleep. He is going to have to get used to it, is all I can say. I work at home and only have to go to an office once or twice a month. Of course that office is in NY and I'm not. Anyway I don't punch a clock so that is nice, I can sleep til 10am if I want.

  45. What's normal? I think everyone is different. I can work on VERY little sleep & be fine the next day whereas my dear husband is a monster w/out it.

I have always been a nightowl. When I am consistently working out, I tend to get better/more sleep. For health reasons I've been TRYING to force myself to go to bed no later than 12am. I used to only be able to fall asleep w/ the TV but my DH nixed that so now I read. I usually get about 8 nowadays but I could live on 4.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am fully refreshed at my best with exactly 9 hours sleep. That being said, I tend to get 6 a night during the week. I got to bed at 10pm, fall asleep at 11pm and up at 5am or 6am. I don't have any kids though.

  47. I'm super old and try to get to bed before 9pm because I get up at 5:15am. However, I also end up waking up in the middle of the night and losing a few hours of sleep because of anxiety, which tends to rudely rouse one from a dead sleep. I also get up to get a drink about 4-5 times a night, which goes to follow that I have to get up to pee the same amount of times. Then I wake up because of hot flashes and night sweats (I know, TMI). It really sucks getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Also a shout out to the Trader Joe's employees. I love you guys - you are always so pleasant and seem to love your jobs. Little did I know about the crazy hours you keep.

  49. I'm currently not working, so it's usually 11 or 11:30, and I'm up about 7am. It's impossible for me to sleep past 8am no matter what time I go to bed.
I'm starting a new job in a few weeks that starts at 7am with a half hour commute, so I need to start training myself to get up at 5am. I'm not looking forward to that.
My heart also goes out to the insomniacs that posted. Wow, I don't know how you function. I can live on 4 hours a night once in a while, but need at least 6 to 7 hours to be able to function properly.

  50. I'm a swing shift worker - 3-11p.
I get home and unwind, usually not in bed before 2am.
I'm up between 10 and noon, depending on when I crashed.
I am decidedly *not* a morning person.

  51. In bed and usually asleep around 11:30pm. During the week I roll out of bed around 7:50am for work, and if I am off I set the alarm to be out of bed by around 9:30am or I feel like crap. Could sleep 12 hours if you let me....

    ReplyDelete
  52. I go to sleep at 11 each night and wake up around 7.30am. I even am in bed by 11pm on the weekends, but I get to sleep in totaling about 11-12 hours a night in sleep those lucky days.
I've always struggled with depression though, so maybe that has something to do with it.
