When Your Movie Sucks, Try A New Angle
With, "I'm Still Here" possibly in the running for worst movie of the year, Casey Affleck decided he better tell someone really fast that it is all a spoof and that it is not a documentary so don't blame Casey, the director if it is a really bad documentary.
“It’s a terrific performance, it’s the performance of his career." That is what he told the New York Times. From the time Joaquin Phoenix walked on the stage at Letterman a few years ago to know, it has all been a gag. You know, something like Hunter S. Thompson. We, the audience were supposed to get the joke and know it was a joke because the camera techniques in the movie we have not seen get more sophisticated as the movie progresses. Oh, well, sure yeah, that is the first thing I would have looked at. The reviews for the film have been vicious and nasty and I wonder if they were great if Casey would have been so likely to volunteer that this was all performance and not a documentary.
This whole thing is/was such a stupid waste of time. Get back to work Joaquin.
ReplyDeletethis whole thing just seemed to me like the sort of thing one thinks of whilst really drunk. but then its time to sober up and laugh about it, a bit embarrassed perhaps...
ReplyDeleteThey probably thought they were being so cool, cutting edge, that it would create such a firestorm of both controversy and interest.
ReplyDeleteSo glad it has backfired in a profound way.
So their little trick has backfired on them. Good! It couldn't have happened to two nicer guys.
ReplyDeleteHasn't it been known from that start that this was a put up job?
ReplyDeleteI've been a subscriber of People magazine since I was a child. I have never in my life seen a zero-star review given ... until now. At first I thought it might be a typo but no, NONE of the stars were colored in at the top of the review for this movie. And People magazine does not give bad reviews. I think they gave at least one star to Dumb and Dumberer.
ReplyDeleteI think their little plan was to generate buzz "Is it fake or is it real?" but it turns out that no one gives a shit. That's the worst thing to happen to a movie: zero interest.
Remember when Hollywood was talented, clever, entertaining, somewhat sincere and a way for us to escape?
ReplyDeleteNow we have this bloated industry that acts exactly like what we all have in our lives- phoniness and greed.
Where has the escapism part gone?
i think i have this down to a mathematical equation:

ONE STUPID F-ING IDEA
PS if i see this guy at the farmers' market again i am going to hand this to him....always time for more math!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a case of two giant egos who got too big for their britches and figured that anything they did would be embraced by the masses and their disposable income.
ReplyDeleteI bet you will soon be able to find this movie on video, right next to "Battlefield Earth." :)
I remember when I used to have a crush on both of them...(sigh). It must really suck when you're an Affleck and your brother turns out to be a better director than you.
ReplyDeleteNo one has been able to one-up Andy Kaufman yet. This was a bad attempt.
ReplyDeleteShut up, Casey Affleck. Go away, Joaquin Phoenix.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
Weird, the reviews were really bad, but suddenly today I'm noticing a marked increase the number of positive reviews. I kind of actually want to give him credit for staying in douchebag character for two years, then again...he's a douchebag. I might watch this.
ReplyDeleteOne word. FAIL.

ReplyDeleteI was stunned they came out and admitted it's fake RIGHT AS IT'S GOING INTO THEATERS. After all this time with the put-on they fumble right at the opening. How very very strange.
ReplyDeletePoseurs, both of them. Feh.
ReplyDelete@delilah
ReplyDeleteyou're almost right ;)

Blleeecccchh. Not interested in the LEAST.
ReplyDeleteJoaquin would be sooooooo much more handsome and interesting if he'd just act like a normal human being and not some idiotic nutjob.
