Maybe I just have a bad memory, but I remember Jodie Foster as a champion of the rights of women and how she and Kelly McGillis took the opportunity afforded to them in the movie Accused and used it as their personal soapbox. Apparently that Jodie Foster is gone now and has been replaced by someone who wants to make a buck and does not care who she has to defend or work with.
Earlier this week, and in the past months, Jodie has repeatedly stood up for Mel Gibson and called him a friend and how he always would be a friend and how she believes Mel. It is good to have friends who are loyal, but you also do not want to be blind. Now comes word that Jodie is going to be a lead in the new Roman Polanski movie. Yes, the woman who once made a movie for women who were rape victims will now be working for a rapist of underage girls. See what I mean about a paycheck? Kate Winslet will co-star with Jodie. I wonder if she will being her kids on set for Roman to play with.

Mel Gibson. Making The Accused & Silence of the Lambs. She's got a very strange, dark side to her. Heck, she made Taxi Driver at what, 13? I don't think there are many people in the world with insight into that mind of hers.
I am incredibly disappointed by the Polanski decision, but I guess she's angling for another Oscar.

ReplyDeleteALTHOUGH, I think it's honorable that Jodie's sticking by her admitted "lifelong" friend, despite his recent craziness, I think her coming out and saying she's sticking by Mel is more because she just directed him in a movie and wants people to go see it, hell, wants it to be distributed, which I believe is in question. But don't recall her ever saying she was a friend or even passing acquaintance of Roman's, so I agree with Enty, that she might should have passed on that role. She does so few movies, is it really that awesome of a part? Some actors/directors, etc., even though they're outspoken about various causes, still have egos the size of Mt. Rushmore and would choose a good business deal over anything else, obviously.

ReplyDeleteI am more than half convinced Mel must be the baby daddy donor to one or both of her sons. And it's because of her son(s) that she has so much at stake in continuing to publicly defend Gibson and his reputation.

ReplyDeleteI like Kate Winslet but don't really care if she works with Polanski because I'm not a fan of her work. Some is good but most I'm "meh" about.
Jodie, on the other hand is a different story. I've always admired her work and respected her as an artist. Now I must sadly kick her to the curb. :(
I've been over her since she dumped Cydney for a younger woman. I don't think much of her values.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone in Hollywood have a spine? There's nothing wrong with saying, "As a friend of Mel's for many years, I hope his life will turn around." Short and simple. Not too judgmental and not condoning anything he's done or said. That's having your cake and eating it too.

I love Jodie's face on film but want to remind y'all that she was also besties with Russel Crowe. He was once rumoured to be her baby daddy and first showed up in Hollywood as her straight date.

Jodie Foster has been in the acting business for a very long time. I am sure she has worked with a number of directors, producers and actors who are just as guilty of crimes similar to if not worse than that of Roman Polanski. Not every one in the world judges people on their personal life and the choices they make when they aren't working. And Enty's last remark was nothing more that snark. Roman Polanski likes young girls...I think Jody's boys are safe.

He's no better or worse than the rest of the scum in that business. I applaud ANYONE who sticks by their friends when they're down and out. It's ridiculous that anyone judges Mel Gibson unless they have lived his life. Or when (or if) he gets charged, the let the damn judge judge him. You crucify the press for ragging on people, yet you do the exact same thing.

audieh_1, Enty was referring to Kate Winslet's children in the last remark, one of whom is a little girl. It is the same thing I thought about when Ewan McGregor worked with the man, and he has 3 daughters.
ReplyDeleteCindy, the difference is when someone is caught, you can then make an informed decision as to whether you work with them or not. I personally couldn't work with a child rapist. I have a friend who was sexually abused/raped and it has messed her up. A wonderful person who had most of her potential destroyed by a paedophile.
Finally, Mel Gibson has been found guilty of anti-semitism and sexism. Even if you don't believe in the Oksana tapes, what he said to the police officers is in no doubt. As someone who has an alcoholic brother, sometimes you can no longer stick by damaged people, because until they are ready to help themselves, the abuse and stress they put you under is too much to bear.
@audieh_1: I agree. If we all stopped working for morally questionable people (and /or criminals), we'd have 75% unemployment.

ReplyDeleteAs for Polanski, is he any different than Charlie Chaplin (screwing a 17yr old Oona O'Neill) or Jerry Lee Lewis (married his 13 yr old cousin). The victim of Polanski says to drop it so maybe there is more to the story than what has been published?
Either way, I don't condone pedophilia -- I was a victim myself -- but I do think that we shouldn't judge others. Ms. Foster and Ms. Winslet are not whores as someone stated earlier, unless we are all whores who work for money. If they want to work with Polanski, should it be our business? No -- if we don't like it, we should not see the movie. Period.

Agree Mooshki, and very disappointed with anyone who would work for Polanski, personally. He is all sorts of filthy coward. As a consumer, I can choose which records to buy and which movies to watch - it's easy to avoid ones involving unrepentant and lying dirtbags - lots of options.
