"Honey, I'm Going To This Beach Resort. You can't Come Because I'm Bringing My Virtual Girlfriend."

I am trying to envision a scenario where I would want to go to a fabulous beach resort and instead of bringing someone special, I bring my iPhone and my virtual girlfriend. Well, in Japan this has happened over 2,000 times just in the past month. Apparently there is some game called Love Plus which is on Nintendo DS and also the iPhone. From what I understand the makers of the simulation game have managed to take the virtual world and incorporate it into the real world.

On a beach resort in Japan, the makers of the game and the resort have teamed up to allow users to use their game and a two dimensional barcode which shows their virtual girlfriend as if she was really there.

"Look, it's like I'm in a snapshot with her," said Shu Watanabe, 23, as he showed off his iPhone display, featuring himself next to the image of a doe-eyed cartoon character named Rinko, a smiling high school girl."

But wait, it gets even more weird. "The local Ohnoya hotel even offers traditional rooms to the unusual couples, which feature two sets of futon beds and another barcode panel that allows the men to visualize their girlfriends in a flattering summer kimono."

That's right you can sleep right next to your virtual girlfriend all night and well, nothing else really. She just sits there. She isn't even some kind of blow up doll. If the power goes out so does your girlfriend. In one year, over 430,000 copies of this game have been sold. So, what does it say about society or life that men would rather hang out with a virtual girlfriend then take a real person to a beach resort instead.

  1. Meh. I'm not so sure losing these men from the "sea" is such a loss. ;)

  3. Cheaper than having to pay expenses for a real girl on vacation.

  4. I imagine that Japan is like doing acid, so I'm not shocked that this is a big deal over there.

  5. She looks like virtual Tyra Banks. Wasn't there an article a few weeks ago about how Japanese women were refusing to have sex? Maybe they just don't want to sleep with these idiots.

  6. I think it says less about our society and more about how sad and pathetic some people's lives are that they want to make their virtual reality "real." I've played Sims before but have never, ever become attached to them!

  7. Umm, maybe it's because these guys want to have high school girlfriends, and that's kind of illegal?

  8. Thank you, *girl, that's JUST what I was thinking. "a doe-eyed cartoon character named Rinko, a smiling high school girl." - um, yeah.

  15. what it says is that because of our modern exposure to technology, toxins, plastics, pharmaceutical drugs, growth hormones, pesticides, pollution and whatever else - the libidos are disappearing, not to mention sperm count, women's fertility, and the ability to make real children. get used to it folks. we're gonna have to simulate everything real that we take for granted today.

    and i'm not even exaggerating.

**don't even need to step down from the soapbox

  16. Um, there actually is no honey to inform that the guy is going to a beach resort with his virtual girlfriend because that's exactly the reason why the guy has a virtual girlfriend in the first place!

I think that the ideal woman for most Japanese men is a woman who doesn't talk back, is fine with accepting orders and be overall very submissive. Unfortunately for them, emancipation also seems to catch up with Japanese women and they don't want to be treated like dogs anymore.
That's why those limp dicks evade the issue of having to deal with a self-confident woman who doesn't take any bullshit by getting themselves one of those virtual girlfriends.

For some reason, that made me laugh.

Not only does the simulated girlfriend look very young, she also looks Western. Is that the
result of Japan and the rest of the world having Paris, Lindsay, and the Kartrashians crammed down our collective throats?

  18. I love that the guy's last name is Wantanbe. In my head it sounds like "want to be."

  20. Japanese men have always had a penchant for things like this. The schoolgirl in blazer and knee socks is a inherent image in their collective porn fantasies. Girls make extra cash by selling their dirty underwear to panty sniffers! It's a weird aspect of their culture, and the fact that a hotel accomodates this says a lot about its pervasiveness.

Why then are some African countries both among the worst polluted in the world and with the highest birth rate?
