The Hansen Brothers Quit Deadliest Catch
Earlier this month when Discovery sued the Hillstrand brothers you could see the writing on the wall that the Time Bandit would not be on Deadliest catch for the upcoming season. What probably caught Discovery off guard was that Sig Hansen said that he is quitting the show because of the way Discovery has treated the Hillstrands. In a joint statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the three said,
"We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in 'Deadliest Catch,'" the three crab fishermen said in a joint written statement. "It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive 'Catch' fans we have met over the years."
How can you have a season of Deadliest Catch without the Hansen brothers? You can't. Discovery should just call the whole thing off now because they are down to three boats. You need to be able to move between several boats to keep it all interesting.
I'm so bummed about this, but you could see it coming. I'm still interested to follow Phil's sons, but I could care less about Capt Keith of the Wizard.
ReplyDeleteLet me add that I wish it were Capt Keith that was not returning. He annoys like no other.
ReplyDelete@diatribes - I feel the same way about Keith, he's a rube. Now that the Hanson and Hillstrand bros are out, I just can't see any reason to watch the show. And even more so since Capt. Phil is gone.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the fellas are sticking together, but I'm sad it's come to this. I loved this show when it first started. Why does everything have to go to hell?
ReplyDeleteThey should do a show with just the sons of Captain Phil. I am done watching Deadliest Catch.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was going to be about Zach, Isaac, and Taylor Hanson and I was wondering why they would be on Deadliest Catch. (I don't get out much)
ReplyDeleteI never liked the Hillstrand brothers so the lawsuit thing didn't really bother me, but losing the Hansen's is really going to tank the show. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know the back story behind all of this (why the Hillstrands decided to no longer participate in the program they had already filmed with Discovery, etc.).
ReplyDeleteIf I were them, and I read how much Kate Gosselin was making on TLC and they realized their program was top of the food chain at Discovery, I might be expecting a bit more money to be coming my way. Discovery and TLC being under the same umbrella. I just wonder what the agreements were like before this past season and what might have been expected after the record audiences they had with the most recent season (Phil's death). There just has to be much more ($$$ issues) to this.
Oh, I agree. Keith comes off like, and probably is, an asshole. But I just thought of him as a 'different view' of how to captain/run a boat.
I haven't really cared to watch this since the After the Catch episode after Captain Phil died, and the loss of the second best story line, practically guarentees that I will not watch again.
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteJust WOW!
It was hard to imagine the show without Phil, but I would watch if the boys could continue on.
And then the Hillstrand brothers and now Hansens out. This show will tank.
Even if they were able to get other boats, it would never be the same.
Deadliest Catch without Phil and Sig? Hell no. Cue the Fat Lady.
ReplyDeleteI've had a theory ever since the Hillstrand story broke. The Cornelia Marie family has been very quiet since the passing of Phil, occasionally eluding to the fact that Discovery was making it a bit difficult for them to continue with the show next year. I think the CM has a lot of expenses & probably wanted some help from Discovery, and given the ratings last season you would think they would do what they could to salvage the boat. I think that in the middle of taping the "Hillstrand spinoff" a final decision was made regarding the CM, causing the Hillstrand brothers to back out of the Discovery gig. After all, they were close with Phil & his boys and seem like the type of guys who would say "screw you Discovery" if indeed they had screwed over the CM. Then Sig & his brothers enter the picture & side with the Time Bandit, and before you know it the show is left with...Keith/The Wizard.
ReplyDeleteJust my two cents, but to me it makes sense. If the show turns out to be Keith & a bunch of new boats next season I won't be watching. And if I'm correct in my assumptions, shame on Keith. All I know is that their season starts filming in October & Discovery has very little time to react. I hope they get it resolved, but I trust that they guys who pulled out are doing it because it's morally right & not because of cash/greed.
If only morality could rule the day! So tired of all the greed at the top levels and the inability of the uber-rich to share with those who make them wealthy. Hope the show tanks!
ReplyDeleteI've done some checking, and the Cornelia Marie has not yet said it's confirmed for next season though it was originally scheduled to be a part of it. Discovery had the boats booked through 2014. Obviously with Phil's passing it changed things a bit. So right now it's just The Wizard & the "boat of the season." This sucks. Discovery better fix this quick, or just end the show right now. No one wants to watch Keith or new boats/crew members.
ReplyDeleteI guess I was the only one who read this and thought the Hanson brothers (think MMMBop) were the ones in question in the article... oops?
ReplyDeleteI always thought Keith and the Wizard were the weak link, every season I hoped they were gone. No way will I watch the show without the Hillstrands and the Hansons.
ReplyDelete@xoApril - No, more than one of us thought that there would be some a crabbin' and a singin'. That would be really deadly.
ReplyDeleteSkittleKitty - Did you see the segment where Keith's daughter calls him on the boat and lectures him for using tobacco? While Keith may be a bit of an ass, his daughter is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteIf Discovery were SMART (ahem), then it would do all it can to make amends. The Harris family, the Hansen brothers and the Hillstrands were THE reason everyone watched.
I watched it also for the mellow tones of Mike Rowe.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!
ReplyDeleteSo Discovery likes Sarah Palin, but wants to bump off my favorite captain (Sig)?!?!?!
Bye, Discovery!!!!
