Over the past two weeks there have been some parties celebrating the 25th anniversary of Desperately Seeking Susan, The Breakfast Club and now comes word that AMC is going to show Back To The Future at their movie theatres all over the country on October 23rd and 25th. Those are three great movies so it got me to thinking what else was released in 1985 and worthy of a trip back to the big screen. Obviously I think Breakfast Club should be. There was also a little film called Goonies which was released in 1985. I love that one. Weird Science also came out in 1985 and is definitely worthy of a big screen viewing.
It was a busy year for Sylvester Stallone too. Rambo Part 2 and also Rocky IV came out in 1985. For the romantics in you, Out Of Africa came out in 1985.
The list is incredible. Cocoon, Jewel Of The Nile, Witness, Fletch, Spies Like Us, European Vacation, Pale Rider, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Jagged Edge, St. Elmo's Fire. Hell, even Teen Wolf was released that year. Oh, and way down the list is a classic, The Sure Thing. Real Genius, Moving Violations. I could go on, but I will stop.

ReplyDelete1985 sure had a lot of great movies...so hard to pick a favorite. I also remember that year being a good one for music, too. It's too bad there haven't been any recent years with such a great string of movies.
ReplyDeleteWhile it isn't the best of the group, my cousin and I watched Desperately Seeking Susan so many times when we were younger that we knew the whole movie (including all gestures, background people, etc.) by heart. I will always have a soft spot for that movie.
It's incredible how low the movie industry has sunk in 25 years... I'd like to see them TRY to release that many classic, ORIGINAL movies in e'en the next 25 years!

ReplyDeleteI was at college in 1985 and walked to the theatre to see many of these movies. My favorite in the movie theatre experience was near the end of Pretty in Pink when everyone loudly complained about the ugly dress.

ReplyDeleteI just St. Emo's fire again, too. The movie did not age well and Demi is unrecognizable in it! It is truly amazing the amount of plastic surgery she claims to not have had.

ReplyDeleteI was born in July 1985 and I feel so old now! A lot of my favorite films, especially the teen films were amazing. Ferris Bueller and Sixteen Candles being a couple of my favorites. I know they aren't from 1985, but I still love them.

The only ones I actually remember seeing are Pee Wee & The Care Bears movie, which I vividly recall my mother falling asleep during & my six year old self thinking she was nuts for missing such a riveting cartoon.
I can't believe how many of those movies I saw. Now, I rarely even see an Oscar winner.
ReplyDeleteLast Saturday night I watched A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. Great stories, great acting. Both are lacking these days.

@ skeeball re: Demi's face. She got a MAJOR overhaul right before Ghost and it makes me laugh every time I watch it. Her Ghost face is unrelated to any of her other faces. Go back and watch her old General Hospital clips to see vintage Demi face.

ReplyDeleteGoonies is one of the Greatest teenage adventures movies ever. (well not really) but I loved that movie when i was a kid. it was awesome! i HIGHLY recommend.
I was only 4 in 1985 but I have seen just about every movie named. God I miss the 80's, such great flicks. What the hell happened Hollywood?

I would also like to point out that I would much rather go to the movie theater and see a good old movie on the big screen then waste my money on some of the crap that they try to sell me on now.
I will always smuggle my own candy in though. Its like highway robbery at the concession stand.
1985 was also my favorite year of Saturday Night Live. The Joan Cusack season. It was considered the worst season ever (most everybody was fired after 1 season), BUT out of that cast came 4 academy award nominations. (2 for Joan, 2 for Robert Downey.)
