The Video Music Award Nominations Are A Joke. Oh, And Fixed

This morning, MTV announced all the nominees for the Video Music Awards. I remember when they were a big deal and were not rigged. Lady GaGa got 13 nominations which is a record. That was probably part of her deal. She does not get to win 13 awards because then MTV cannot promise enough awards to other people to get them to show up or to play. So, Lady GaGa gets the most nominations ever, gets the publicity for the day and leading up to the event and probably gets to open the show in exchange. Oh, and will probably get 3 or 4 awards. Eminem is nominated and will an award if he agrees to sing with Rihanna. If you sing at the show you win an award. If you present, then I think your name is thrown into a hat with the other presenters to see who wins an award. If you have a duet with someone like Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg you get an award for sure because they can honor two people with one award.

You can tell the whole thing is fixed because at the same time MTV releases the names of the nominees they release statements from the artists saying how happy they are to be nominated. Think of this as one of those People Magazine lists that are totally subjective. That is the VMA Awards. Don't ever confuse them with something real.

  1. I don't understand why the even have the awards anymore. It's not like they ever show video's... I use to love MTV - Now it's just gone to shit!

  2. Icecat took the words right out of my mind. They don't even show music videos and haven't for years. The past few years their awards shows have been trainwrecks, too... like when they had Britney open. Eeek.

  3. I'm with you, Icecat. Shouldn't YouTube be responsible for holding the VMAs now that it's the source for music videos?

You know what else isn't real? Those jaw-dropping controversies, like Kanye's last year.

  5. ITA that 13 nominations for Lady GaGa is too many. Her Paparazzi video is really good and deserves to win.

I can't find an offical video for Eminem and Rihanna's Love The Way You Lie. It's supposed to be out soon.

  6. I think we knew it was fixed a couple years ago when Britney won an award and hadn't done anything.

  7. MTV still does this?

    Hmph.

    Isn't that special?

  8. Jessica is right - it's so obviously fixed. But I don't think they needed to give 13 nominations to Gaga to get her to perform. She puts a lot of effort into her videos. (Speaking of fixed - the MuchMusic awards show was so fixed by giving Miley an award because she hosted.)

The only award to watch would be the duets. Will mtv piss off Beyoncé and award it to California Gurls? Or will they placate her and award it to Telephone?

I still think they had a good idea with the hotel format a few years ago. Too bad it didn't work out.

  9. Totally agree with Icecat. MTV lost their way (and all their original fans/viewers) a really long time ago. It's almost like they are not qualified to give out these awards anymore since they are not connected to music videos anymore.
Just like the last few years, I will not watch the show...just watch the hightlight clips on the Internet.

  10. Highlight clips, I meant.
    That is, if there any.

  11. We went to dinner with friends the other night and the men at the table were insisting gaga was a man. We females disagreed, but I googled it-lo and behold it's all over the web. What is up with this?

  12. While my son went to NYU he worked at MTV...everything is fixed and orchestrated.

  13. ITA with Jessica

    @Katja

There was a photo that looked like GaGa had something between her legs, and the rumor started. I doubt it's true, but GaGa got lots of attention from the story.

  14. @Nosey Parker-

You know GaGa totally did that on purpose to help promote herself, right?

I love the music, I think she is probably really nice, but wow is she a huge famewhore, really out shamelessly to get that name out there.
Remember she was a brunette pop singer with normal clothes and no real shtick until 'Lady GaGa' was created.
The only thing that stayed was the voice and the talent, which is why, although I roll my eyes at her stunts and clothes, I still consider myself a fan.

  15. Ga Ga makes me gag gag.

  16. fuck Gaga! if she wins, I hope Madonna, Ace of Base and Roxette all get up to accept. they did a lot more for her career than she ever did. that chick doesn't have a original talented bone inher body that isn't biting on someone else's style.

    boycott.

  17. i have always really liked music vidoes, but MTV doesn't even play them, as has been mentioned here already. shouldn't they change their name? they are no longer a true 'music television' channel. the only place i see mucis videos anymore is on the internet!

    Yes, I agree.
    I'm a GaGa fan too.

  19. Remember when it was soo cool to come home from school to check out the latest videos on MTV. When they VJ's and Metal shows at night? Now they have pregnant teens who dont know their ass from a hole in the ground and kids claiming to be from Jersey that arent, getting paid mucho bucks to act like idiots! MTV killed the video star, not radio!

  20. I haven't watched this yawnfest in over 20 years. I never felt like I was missing anything!

  21. @Mrs. M5

They already dropped the "Music Television" subscript from their name. It was earlier this year, or maybe last year, I believe.

  22. I miss the MTV of the late 80's. me and my friends would stay up all night watching videos on MTV Europe.

The Vigilant Citizen has a great article about how the 2009 MTV awards was really a satanic ritual with Madonna as the high priestess and Taylor Swift as the sacrificial lamb...*L*

  23. I'm with Jasmine and Nosey Parker. Sure, this show is bullshit, but Gaga has been the biggest news and business in music for the last two years. I enjoy her.

    Jax: gaga hater! ;)

  24. @ Icecat - ITA

I'm a Gaga fan too, despite (or maybe because of) her hijinks. It's when she uses the quasi-British accent that I cringe.

  25. MTV is still on the air? In any way relevant to music?

  26. I realize that it's the cool thing to talk about MTV back in the day when it played videos, but I still see plenty of videos on MTV Hits and MTV Jams. I will permanently associate Gaga's song Poker Face with my son's birth because I saw the video like 5 times while I was in the hospital for it. Is this unusual? Am I the only one whose cable/satellite/Fios tv provider offers a bunch of MTV channels, some of which exclusively air videos?

  27. @nosey parker & @jasmine

interesting.. I saw that picture and I guess my imagination just isn't that far reaching... ;)

that said I like her and her videos, she is fun.

I haven't enjoyed her live (on AI), but when we have great live artists like Pink, it's hard to compare to that.
