Steven Slater, the Jet Blue flight attendant who quit his job in one of the most interesting ways ever was all over the news today. Plus, because he has become a folk hero he even has songs and YouTube videos. Here is a selection.
This is beyond fabulous! If he had just gotten on the speaker and told everyone to F***off, the reaction would have been pretty negative. But he added such a cool factor by grabbing the beer and sliding out of the plane. Can't wait to see the creative ways everyone will come up with now to quit a job!
I guess when you're in job where you get berated daily (much like I am) its great when you see someone stand up for themselves and say, no, that is not o.k.
Air travel seems to really bring out the worst in people - I can't stand it when people refuse to turn off their phones or HAVE to get up before the plane has stopped completely at the gate...I appluad this guy and also, I'd like him to take me dancin'.
Cheryl, no you're not. Yeah, flight attendant is not a fun job all the time but neither is my job, neither are most peoples' jobs. He gets points for scampering drama and the beer but point deduction for being a self-involved jerk to everyone on that plane, not just the one deserving passenger. He gets a further point deduction for blaming his employer (which has to now pay $10k to put that chute back in ready position) and "the public" for his break down. Oh, I'm sorry, sir, am I inconveniencing you by flying JetBlue? So sorry. I'll stop contributing to your salary. However, point addition for being found in bed with his man by the police, though. I'm neutral on the guy, really. The charges are over the top. What really bugs me is all the people that automatically jump on his bandwagon, calling him a hero and whatnot. He's not a hero. He's a very self-involved guy who made a dramatic scene and everyone's reading their version of reality into it.
Honestly, I know this is going to offend people... if you do not identify with this man you are probably the person whom all this is directed at(the woman that refused to simply sit till the plane had stopped).
I think the majority of people that have worked in customer service know EXACTLY what this man was going through. If you do not work at the company nor have you ever worked at the company LET PEOPLE DO THEIR JOBS THE WAY THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO! It is idiots like the woman hitting the flight attendant in the head with her luggage that force companies to implement rules you might think are stupid or unnecessary. Believe me, the person working/enforcing those rules probably feels the same way. I know some people working in customer service just started out rude, but there are people that love their jobs and try to look past the constant barrage of stupidity/ignorance that they see on a daily basis... You can only be pushed so far though.
I think that might be the reason why I don't like him. Because most of us have to deal with this. I get yelled at on a daily basis, but I can't run out of my office in a blaze of glory (and now I'll have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day). I have a kid, I need the job. So I suck it up, just like the rest working world. I want to like him and what he did, but it just bugs me instead of inspriring me.
my question is this: if this guy has to face charges for using the slide, yadda yadda, wouldn't the passenger also face charges too? not only did she assault someone, she assulted a crew member who's job is to protect everyone. had she knocked him out midflight, that could have caused a worse scenario for all of the passengers.
sure he did wrong, but he's still a badass in my book. anyone who's had to deal with shitty clientele has fantasized about quitting like that. i don't blame him one bit for flipping out. the bitch wouldn't even apologize to him? she's the far worse one in my book!
I definitely agree that the story resonates for anyone who has had a truly miserable job where you have spent many a day envisioning quitting the job in a manner similar to this.
Let's not forget the man worked in air travel for over 20 days, had previously been involved in another scenario recently where another customer went ape shit. If I'd been subjected to all this and some dumbass passenger clocked me in the head with her luggage, you can bet I'd probably snap at some point too. Everyone has their breaking point....

The only reason he's brought up on charges is the chute, and the amount of money that costs. The passenger needs to be charged with assault. Funny we don't hear from her ...
I'm a debt collector. If the worst thing I get called is a cunt, than it's not a bad day. You've obviously been harassed at your job as well. Did you walk out, seriously inconveniencing 100 or so other people who didn't harass you, and throw your company under the bus? I'm guessing you didn't because you're an adult and that's what adults do. It sucks, but them's the breaks.

I really feel for anyone working in the customer service industry (been there, done that, and am still doing it to some extent). It can be very difficult at times. You can have a hundred nice people, but it's that 1 nasty person who will completely ruin your day. I also think that's why Ashley Simpson became so disliked after that McDonald's incident. Almost all of us have been on the other end of that nonsense.
Obviously Steven Slater's dramatic exit from his job resonated because I think many of us would have loved to do something like that at one job or other.
I think the passenger who hit him with her luggage should be charged if he's going to be charged with a crime too. You don't get to assault people because you think they are lower on some imaginary food chain. He'd been writing on an airline employee board complaining about what a problem carry on luggage was becoming and that it put Stewards in an awful position of confronting passengers and in fact something was bound to happen. About a month later a passenger hit him on purpose with her carry on bag, disregarding what she was told to do. Did he react badly yes, but I think if he's going to be charged the passenger should be charged as well.
The real winner in all of this: Jet Blue for getting a zillion dollars in free advertising. If they were smart they would make a funny commercial out of the incident and just move on.

And, no I didn't quit right then, I did flip out though and got in trouble for it, but I figured it was a small price to pay for retaining my dignity.
