Lady GaGa Talks About Rock Bottom And How She Still Does Coke

You know, a lot of actors and musicians will talk about drug use and always say it is in the past. I am trying to remember when someone admitted to a national magazine that they still do coke. Maybe it is a publicity thing, but Lady GaGa says in an interview in the new Vanity Fair that she still occasionally does cocaine. And by occasionally she says a few times a year. Hmm, what exactly is a few times a year?

She says she does not condone drug use and does not want her fans thinking they have to do it to be cool or to reach their goals, it is just something she does. Hmmm. To me it seems a little odd when you consider that in the interview she also says that she hit rock bottom once and almost went to rehab, but decided to go to her grandmother's house instead. Huh?

Oh, and if you are thinking she went there to dry out, it must have been the quickest recovery ever because she says she was fine within one day.

"I hit rock bottom, and it was enough to send a person over the edge. My mother knew the truth about that day, and she screamed so loud on the other end of the phone, I'll never forget it. And she said, 'I'm coming to get you.'" Instead of going to rehab, the singer went to her 82-year-old grandmother’s house in West Virginia. "I cried," Gaga recalls. "I told her I thought my life was over and I have no hope and I've worked so hard, and I knew I was good. What would I do now? And she said, 'I'm gonna let you cry for a few more hours. And then after those few hours are up, you're gonna stop crying, you're gonna pick yourself up, you're gonna go back to New York, and you're gonna kick some a--.'"

Someone want to explain that one to me? Is it really rock bottom if you are fine in a couple of hours? To me this seems like publicity.

  1. I wondered who photographed the cover? It's awful. Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Tiger's girlfriends?? VF sure ain't what it used to be.

  2. I like Gaga. A lot. But sometimes she makes it so hard.

  3. Well, her comments are as specious as her lyrics: it's no surprise that this Queen of Poop Music is entirely full of crap.

  4. She is what, 23? How much insight can she have?

  5. There's more than a little doubt about many of her claims... the independent origin of her "identity" and even her stage name, the totally individual development of her style, her personal history and, yup, her age.

  6. At least she's not pretending to be sober or something that she is not.

  7. Depends on what rock bottom is for *her*. She could be a very strong person, but she must also realize there are plenty of other people out there who have more addictive personalities.

  8. I can't appreciate her talent because she never wears pants and every day out is a costume. She tries too hard in interviews. Their is nothing real about her.

  9. I would pay a king's ransom to be able to just see her in a t-shirt, jeans and some cute shoes....no crazy costumes, no crazy make-up, no ridiculous costumes....just the REAL Stefani Germanotta, not Andy Warhol's bastard spawn...I mean Lady Gaga.

    Something tells me she's probably a very sweet gal, kinda shy.

    But having to do this Lady Gaga thing all the time, I'm not shocked that she does cocaine.

  10. Hey -- parse through Warhol's book of "philosophy" (which is more than kind of wonderful): you'll find more than a few observations which show him walking right past L.G. to let others he sees as genuinely original engage him for awhile.

  11. I HAVE seen pics of her like that, before she made it real big, and I just remember being rather shocked when I realized that it was a rare thing!

  12. I've seen lots of pap photos of Lady Gaga on vacation, looking unmade up and like a normal person.

    I agree with the poster who said it depends on what rock bottom means to her. Just because she hasn't spent months in rehab doesn't mean it wsn't rock bottom to LG. Rock bottom just means it's the point where you had the 'come to jesus' moment with yourself and changed your life for the better.

  13. Well, I think she has finally out Madonnaed Madonna.

  14. Lady Gaga (Stef) is that friend who puts you to sleep on the telephone and thinks making up stuff will make her more interesting. I seriously doubt she has ever done coke. I think she is just a boring girl who is trying to be interesting and fails epically. You know that girl, she cannot buy a personality if her life depended on it. That is Lady GaGa or as I call her, Lady Goo Goo.

  15. Technically speaking, cocaine does not produce the same category of withdrawal symptoms that methamphetamine or heroin do, so it used to be commonly said that it wasn't technically "addictive" (defining addiction in the old-fashioned way, as a substance whose absence causes withdrawal). Cocaine is habit-forming, however, and "habit" is hardly strong enough to describe the level of dependency that people go into.

    I guess what I'm trying to say is: you can stop doing coke and you'll be okay -- until something triggers your desire to use, and then you'll be doing whatever it takes to get high again. Often, coke freaks are triggered by anxiety, smells, colors, associations, people, types of music, or things that they personally associate with their cocaine use.

    Because of the way that the body metabolizes cocaine, coming off it is not nearly as horrible as coming down from meth or going into heroin withdrawal. There's a "cocaine hangover" sometimes from sleep withdrawal or other issues, but of all the hard drugs, cocaine is the most suave. Hence, the most seductive. Hence, possibly the worst. (Yeah, hence!)

  16. "Should they whisper false of you, Never trouble to deny;
    Should the words they say be true, Weep and storm and swear they lie."

    Gaga lives this, except she's the one whispering the falsehoods about herself. You can tell she thinks the lies and totally fake person she's created is more interesting to the world than whoever she really is.

  17. I didn't recognize her on the cover at first....since she isn't in some ridiculous outfit.

    @califblondy - I thought Angelina's cover looked awful also.

  18. i have to appreciate her honesty about it and wont judge her for still doing it. i hope she's keeping it inline, but for some reason i don't worry about her. and i agree that rock bottom isn't always about going completely broke, having sex for drugs type of stuff. it's that moment of realizing that you're ruining your life and making the decision to fix it or let it get worse. i know a lot of people that have had those moments, or days.. myself included and it didn't take more than a 2 hour phone call, a lot of crying and some good food and sleep to get over it and decide to live differently. each day after that is the real test of "do i really want to go through with this? sobriety is scary"

    my experience with meth was a little different than described tho- i had no physical withdrawl symptoms whatsoever. it's a mental addiction, not physical. when i was done with it mentally, i was done- no rehab needed. i always heard that coke was more physical than mental, but i can see some people being able to come off it ok. it's sort of like mind over matter. your brain wants the drugs, not your body.

  19. @Mr.Leigh, For some people, having sex for drugs isn't rock bottom, it's a weekend plan! Just kidding. You know, years ago I had a horrible time coming off months of daily meth use, but I suspect that was because my body was trashed from months of nonstop meth (I weighed like 130 pounds). I imagine that if I hadn't been on the verge of poisoning myself with that crap, it would have been easier to heal from. But lots of clubbers go through an intense depression the day or two after their X 'n meth nights, with jags of anger. Probably psychological, though, not physical, although it's hard to make that distinction when you're in it. I'm just glad I'm out!

  20. She has made it very clear that she straight up makes shit up in interviews, thus you shouldn't believe a word she says.

  21. @Bar Harmonies, that reminds me of the conundrum: "everything I tell you is a lie."

  22. Well said, Barton. Having been a user once myself, you hit the nail on the head. I applaud her honesty, quite frankly, and wish her well.

  23. I thought she was a refreshing new voice on the scene when she first came out. I thought some of the AIDs charity work and her stance on celibacy was positive as well. Then I saw an interview with her on Johnathan Ross (BBC) a few months ago that really turned me off though -- she was talking about how she was a true "artist" and what she did was "high art" not pop music, and that she only surrounds herself with friends in the art world, people who challenge her, blah blah blah. If she had any sense of humor about it, it would be one thing, but she was deadly serious. Gag.
    Oh, and she was wearing a hat with an old rotary phone on the top of it. Because she was there to sing "Telephone." Geddit?!?
    High art indeed.
