Do They Have Al-Qaeda Idol?

If only Khuram Sher had a better singing voice he might not have become a terrorist. It turns out that when police in Ottawa were arresting terrorist suspects this week, they got Khuram Sher who was once a contestant on Canadian Idol. The video if him performing is below, but what I don't understand is how can you have Hilary Duff and Avril Lavigne songs memorized and profess to love hockey, music and acting but at the same time want to blow up the country you live in and revert to a system where Avril and Hilary would probably not be welcome and music and acting and for sure Canadian Idol would not exist. Makes no sense to me.

  1. It's odd that someone who is allegedly a terrorist would want anything to do with Western culture.

  2. Maybe he doesn't really want to be a terrorist, but has to because the people he lives with are? Perhaps he is torn between his roots and his new country and all the freedoms it provides? I wonder if we'll ever know.

  3. Or perhaps he's just mentally unbalanced all around. FTW.

  4. A friend was just telling me on Facebook, that they have a reality show in one of the Muslim countries that has people write poetry and read it for judges. I think that would never make it here.

  5. Just want to point out that while the investigation originated in Ottawa, this person was arrested in London, Ontario.

  6. @SEM: I can just imagine him going to Canada with a terrorist agenda, living there for a while and saying, "Life here isn't what we were told it is, at all. I really like it here!"
I talked to people from Iran who were forced to go to anti-American demonstrations ("No work today! No school today! Everyone goes to the demonstration!") on pain of losing their job or place at university if they didn't go. Maybe escaping from that environment and actually being here changed his mind.

  7. Or maybe he got super mad at judges for not passing and decided to seek revenge

  9. I don't know that terrorists are particularly logical or consistent. Mohammed Atta, the leader of the September 11 operation, was a regular at strip clubs in Florida, and apparently there has been TONS of porn on the laptops seized from Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

I think becoming a terrorist has a lot more to do with people's individual situations and conflicts than it does with any religious or ideological purity.

Maybe. I don't know, and I doubt I'll ever truly know because I will never be in that situation/ culture. I'd imagine it's really had to reconcile strict muslim beliefs and living in a Western world. I think it's just really sad that people are still fighting over religion. Who cares? Not me.

  11. mental case all around. scary to know they can go on Canadian Idol one minute and be planning to kill us all the next. embarrassed to be a Canadian when people like this are being allowed to immigrate here. My parents and I went through a 2 year wait and my aunts and uncles weren't allowed to emigrate after us because there were "already enough people" from our part of the world (Britain) here then.

  12. I just wish that when people immigrated here they didn't bring their baggage from back home. Save it, you know? You made it out, now join the rest of us in fucking harmony, o.k?

  13. In the last big wave of immigration to the US - 1890-1910 - there were also people bringing problems from their home countries, including terrorism. (see: the Wall Street bombing of 1920). It evens out with time.

I still think immigration is a net positive, although it's hard to tell that to the people who have lost loved ones because of crimes perpetrated by terrorist creeps.

  14. Anybody ever heard of Sleeper Cells? It's not uncommon for them (terrorists)to live amongst us 'infidels' just like anybody else--go to school w/you, train at your local flight school, get a degree, yeah even play hockey, eat fast-food and indulge in Western culture until such a time they're called upon. It happens in many countries.

  15. @SueEllen, you have taken the words right out of my mouth in a much more dignified tone than I ever would have.

  17. You guys should read up on this guy. He was born and raised in Montreal and is actually a medical graduate of McGill University (a top ranked school in Canada). He has no accent, he did this audition as a gag and fooled the judges on the show. Needless to say he fooled a lot of other people about who he really was as well.

  18. This guy was a native-Canadian! Those are the ones that scare me the most. They are born and bred here and decide to join a terrorist cell. There is a lot more of that going on, I think, than the ones immigrating.

  19. Not only did the guy try out for Canaidan Idol, he was a fucking DOCTOR...he was recently hired at one of the local hospitals as a pathologist.

    CRAZY.
