ABC Thinks The Male Version Of The View Is A Bad Idea Too
Barbara Walters thinks that there is a huge market for a male style version of The View. She envisions five guys sitting around and talking about the events of the day and things guys would be interested in discussing. She thinks it would be great in the afternoons and would replace Oprah.
When the NY Daily News called ABC to get a reaction, the person who answered actually laughed at the suggestion. That is how I feel too. Sure, there are guys who are home during the day and work from home or goof off at work and can watch television, but unless these five guys are sitting around everyday talking about sports and the best way to grill meat, I just don't think this will work.
I don't know many guys who sit around in a circle and would have something to talk about five hours a week. I think the number of guys who watched it would be minimal.
Barbara's starting to get batty!
ReplyDeleteI thought they already had this, and it was called Sportscenter...
@ Adventurous Kate
ReplyDeleteI was going to say Off The Record... heh.
Doesn't Barbara have anything else to do? Why doesn't she just get out there, have a life, and give someone else a chance! Surely she doesn't need money. I just don't understand. And you can see guys sitting around talking about sports and grilling meat on a variety of channels right now. Yes, she's getting batty!

ReplyDeleteDidn't they try this several years ago, and it was an epic fail? I have a vague recollection of Danny Bonaduce and Mario Lopez being involved, which may be why it was not a success.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Guys want SportsNite, ESPN, MLB Network, etc. Game highlights. Action shots. That's all my husband watches, and the news and Deadliest Catch. Guys don't want to talk about "issues" and "feelings."
It was called "The Other Half" and it "starred" Dick Clark, Mario Lopez and Danny Bonaduce. It was on NBC and lasted two years: 2001-2003.
ReplyDeleteJust because they recast and put it on a different network does not make it a Nielsen's rating boom, Babs.
it can't be as bad as half the crap on there already right?
ReplyDeleteYeah, they tried it before. I liked it as much as I like The View. *evil grin*
ReplyDelete@Jenny. Oh, I am so smiling with you. I would love to know what type of woman watches The View. To me, it's a panel of harpy chicken-heads talking so much my head hurts.
ReplyDeleteI'll take Reg and Kelly any day over The View.
It's a ridiculous idea, but it made me think of the Queer Eye guys, and I would absolutely watch a show that consisted of those guys sitting around talking.
ReplyDeleteMy husband likes the Military Channel and shows like Ice Road Truckers. Who would watch a male View? John Tesh?
ReplyDeleteI HATE The View and I am from their target demographic. I have way better things to do than sit on my ass and watch them talk.
@susan, Regis and Kelly comes on at the same time of Oprah for me and I would much rather watch the two of them over Oprah or the View any day.
ReplyDeleteJohn Tesh? Now, that's funny.
ReplyDeleteThis was already done, didn't work, so can we please move on? Why is it so hard to come up with any original ideas anymore?
IMO, Barbara Walters will never retire. Her whole life is about work and having money so that she will never be poor like she was when she was young. Ya, I read the friggin' book.
I thought men only sat in a circle for one reason.
ReplyDeleteI am flabbergasted why anyone under 70 would watch The View. It's awful. I think it sets women back a hundred years. They're just a bunch of boring harpies. none of them are interesting in the least. If they got interesting women with some chemistry, I'd watch. that's the reason why The Other half didn't work. Bonaduce is boring, and who cares about Mario Lopez?
ReplyDeleteNow - someone mentioned about about the Queer Eye guys doing a talk show. I LOVE them. They're hysterical! And they have chemistry.
The Queer Eye guys were the ones who popped into my head also.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch The View, can't stand Barbara Walters and I hate the way everyone acts as if Whoopi is some fucking sage who breathes wisdom. And don't even get me started about that bitch Hasselbeck...
I second that Mango LOLOLOL
ReplyDelete@Maidstone... Ya beat me to it! That was a TOTAL crap-fest! LOL! BUT... I actually watched it! a few times
ReplyDeleteOh, see. Now you're talking. The fellas from Queer Eye, I would be all up in that.
ReplyDeleteMy dream panel of gays would include Isaac Mizrahi (I think I'm the only gal who watched his talk show on E. Loved it) and Mario Cantone. I could listen to them dish about anything.
I was under the impression this Barbara idea was for the heteros, however. Whatevs...
Lorenzo Lamas, Keith Olbermann, (some right-wing dork), and Hulk Hogan.
ReplyDeleteI'd be watching...
Oh you guys with your cable...
ReplyDeleteMy first thoughts when reading this post was of the Other Half as mentioned in an earler post. What a pile of steaming, hot mess that show was. Didn't work then, not going to work now. If she wants to bring back a show geared towards men, it should be the Man Show. Or at least try to get Adam Corrolla involved in this somehow if it must be done. This show is going to suck regardless, but at least with Adam it will suck but be funny :)
ReplyDeleteAm I the only person who looks at this photo and thinks: Boy, people look really stoopid with their legs crossed!
ReplyDelete(Love how Whoopi doesn't conform to the which leg to throw over the other)
I was going to say isn't this show called The Doctors, then realized they have one woman on the panel. One or two. I can't remember and I don't care.
ReplyDeleteIt would need to be a more diverse panel than just the cast of Queer Eye.
ReplyDeleteSuggestions:
Tim Gunn
Isaac Mizrahi
Alan Cumming
Ozzy Osbourne
James Lipton
Possible Mixers:
Matthew McConaughey
Gene Simmons
Slash
Another fun personality to toss into the mix could be Penn Jillette.
ReplyDeletelol @ sunnyside!
ReplyDeletebonaduce is an ass, but i'm not sure you can call him boring!
ReplyDeletebig thumbs up on penn jillette, but i think he and teller do just fine on bullshit!
michael lohan might be skeevy fun... and it would certainly be up his alley (or ali?)! lord knows he can talk enough!
This has been done already with Dick Clark, Mario Lopez, Danny Bonaduce (who is alright as an interviewer), and some doctor. I don't think it succeeded. Men just don't sit around doing this type of thing.
